International Historical Association celebrates Wonder Wheel’s century of thrills and honors two family-run organizations for their role in revitalizing , an American treasure

The National Historical Association (NAPHA), an international educational and enthusiasts’ organization dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of the heritage of the amusement park, will visit Coney Island on July 29, 2021 as part of their annual convention – ParkHop 21 – to celebrate a century of thrills and memories provided to Coney Island visitors by the Wonder Wheel and to honor the wonderful family-run organizations at both Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park and Luna Park that are taking the grandeur of Coney Island into the 21st century.

The Wonder Wheel is a Landmark that is recognized throughout the world. Traditional riders enjoy the view of the Atlantic and of from its 8 stationary cars, but what makes the ride truly unique are the 16 swinging cars that slide in and out of the Wheel while in operation. The ride provides an exciting sensation as it slides to the edge of the wheel on the way down while sliding to the comfort of the ride’s interior on the way up. So unusual is the ride provided by the Wonder Wheel that it served as an inspiration to 2 full-sized replicas. NAPHA members attending the event will be treated to a ride on the Wonder Wheel and will experience the new Coney Island thrills provided by the Phoenix roller coaster at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park. The organization will honor the Vourderis family for its passionate commitment to Coney Island and the Wonder Wheel since 1983.

Not to be overlooked is the passion and fortitude of the Zamperla family. In January 2010, Zamperla became the operator of the old site and a couple of other Coney Island parcels. Recognizing the rich past of Coney Island, the Zamperla organization named their park Luna Park. Besides all the wonderful rides that Luna Park has to offer, they are the caretakers of the venerable and the B&B Carousell. Together with honoring the Zamperla family for its revival of Luna Park, NAPHA members will be treated to ride time on the Thunderbolt roller coaster and the B&B Carousell.

“The family-run organizations that own and manage both Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park and Luna Park have continued the tradition of providing new and fun amusements to Coney Island” according to NAPHA director Josh Litvik. “Both organizations have been wonderful caretakers of those iconic rides everyone associates with Coney Island.”
