Demolition Man is a American science fiction action film directed by Marco Brambilla in his directorial debut. Stallone is John Spartan, a risk- taking police officer, who has a reputation The Demolished Man causing destruction The Demolished Man carrying out his work. After a failed attempt to rescue hostages from evil crime lord Simon Phoenix, The Demolished Man are both sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in Phoenix is thawed for a parole hearing inbut escapes. Society has changed and all crime has seemingly been eliminated. Unable to deal with a criminal as dangerous as Phoenix, The Demolished Man authorities awaken Spartan to help capture him again. The story makes allusions to many other works including Aldous Huxley 's dystopian novel Brave New World[6] and H. Wells 's The Sleeper Awakes. The film was released in the United States on October 8, Inpsychopathic career criminal The Demolished Man Phoenix kidnaps a busload of hostages and takes refuge in an abandoned building. LAPD Sergeant John Spartan runs a thermal scan of the building; finding no trace of the hostages, he leads an The Demolished Man assault to capture Phoenix. Phoenix sets off explosives to destroy the building; the hostages' corpses are later found in the rubble, and Phoenix claims Spartan knew about them and attacked anyway. Both men are sentenced to lengthy terms in the city's new "California Cryo-Penitentiary", a prison in which The Demolished Man are cryogenically frozen and exposed to subliminal rehabilitation techniques. Raymond Cocteau. Phoenix is thawed for a parole hearing and escapes from the cryo- prison by saying a secret password, without knowing how The Demolished Man had learned it. Since the police are no longer equipped to deal with any sort of violent crime, Lieutenant Lenina Huxley has Spartan thawed and reinstated to apprehend Phoenix again. Spartan finds life in San Angeles to be depressing and oppressive, since all types of behavior deemed immoral or unhealthy have been declared illegal; conversely, many other members of the police force view Spartan as savage and uncivilized. Anticipating that Phoenix will attempt to secure firearms, Spartan leads Huxley to a museum and finds The Demolished Man looting an exhibit of weapons. Phoenix escapes and holds Cocteau at gunpoint, but is unable to kill him. Cocteau had orchestrated Phoenix's escape, implanted a command to prevent Phoenix from killing him, and ordered him to kill Edgar Friendly, the leader of a resistance group called the Scraps who refuse to conform. Spartan and Huxley witness this exchange on security cameras and review the cryo-prison records, learning to their shock that Phoenix's rehabilitation program was designed to turn him into an extremely dangerous criminal and terrorist. Spartan and Huxley confront Friendly in the underground ruins where the Scraps live and save him from an assassination attempt by Phoenix and a gang of criminals thawed by Cocteau to assist him. Phoenix taunts Spartan with the revelation that he had framed Spartan for the deaths of the hostages, who were already dead when the building exploded. Phoenix escapes to the cryo-prison, and Spartan pursues him with weapons provided by the Scraps. Unable to harm Cocteau, Phoenix has one of his gang kill him instead and begins thawing out the cryo-prison's most dangerous convicts. Spartan incapacitates Huxley for her protection and fights Phoenix, breaking a vial of a cryogenic chemical that rapidly freezes Phoenix's body solid. Spartan kicks his head off, shattering it, and escapes as the uncontrolled quick-freezing effect triggers an explosion that destroys the cryo-prison. The police fear that the loss of Cocteau and the cryo-prison will end society as they know it, but Spartan suggests that they and the Scraps work together to combine the best aspects of order and personal freedom. He kisses Huxley and they leave together. The original script was written by Peter Lenkovwho retained a story by credit. His initial pitch was rejected by an executive who didn't understand his "frozen cop" idea. The finished script, where a super cop has to battle The Demolished Man world's deadliest criminal, in a future where there is almost no crime, generated more interest. In the early drafts the script was a regular action movie, with no attempt at comedy. Waters pitched it as an action movie The Demolished Man of Woody Allen's Sleeper. Waters had an idea about a small part of Universal Citya shopping and entertainment area called CityWalkand wondered what it might be The Demolished Man if one day all of Los Angeles might be like that, and the idea grew from there. He cited the conclusion of the film, where society will need to find a new balance and compromise, as representing his own position in the political The Demolished Man ground. The Demolished Man looked around his bathroom and said he had a bag of seashells The Demolished Man the toilet as decorations, so Waters decide to use that. He said it was some of the fastest work he'd ever written, [19] and that he had only The Demolished Man on it for two and a half weeks. Dekker explained "If you don't show Kansas, Oz isn't all that special. Director Marco Brambilla had a background in shooting big-budget TV commercials, and this was his first feature film. Brambilla was working to make Richie RichThe Demolished Man Macaulay Culkinbut they couldn't get the budget they needed. The film went into production approximately eight months after that. Stallone passed on the project at first, but came back around to it. He liked the idea The Demolished Man two equal opponents in Spartan and Phoenix, and decided to take a chance on doing something he had not done before. Chan turned it down, not wanting to play a villain. Brambilla explained how he thought the film could be and his passion for the script they were writing, and the next day they received a call and Snipes agreed to do the film. Brambilla said of Snipes "he works The Demolished Man rehearsing too much, and he improvises a lot. The two of them, that combination of energies and the way they interact, really The Demolished Man the movie a lot of favors. They completely respected each other and were really professional, and they did get along. There was no ego or any competition between the actors. General Motors provided the production team with 18 concept vehicles, including the Ultralite. More than 20 fiberglass replicas of The Demolished Man Ultralite were produced to portray civilian and SAPD patrol vehicles in the film. After filming had completed, the remaining Ultralites were returned to Michigan as part of GM's concept vehicle fleet. The film featured the actual demolition of one of the buildings of the no longer operative Belknap Hardware and Manufacturing Company in Louisville, Kentucky. The Demolished Man enabled them to have more The Demolished Man over the explosion, instead of having to cut straight to the building being gone and rubble as they had been forced to do with other projects. And have the explosion and rubble more designed, so to speak. It's fun to do that, because those big pyrotechnics always look great", Silver noted. The film suffered repeated delays, and the original day production schedule ran to days. Heavy rains in Los Angeles delayed filming. A soundstage was The Demolished Man damaged in a fire. Insiders at Warner Bros. Silver rejected this view, saying, "Marco's done a brilliant job. We're over-schedule because this is a very hard movie to make, not because Marco The Demolished Man inexperienced. Demolition Man was the first production to film at the Los Angeles Convention Center after it was rebuilt in the s, it was used as the Cocteau Center. Several locations in Irvine were also used. The helicopter bungee jump at the start of the film was coordinated by Charles Picerni, and performed by stuntman Ken Bates. For safety, and due The Demolished Man the danger of recoil back into the helicopter blades, a decelerator was used instead of a real bungee, and Bates jumped feet from a Chinook helicopter. The film mentions Arnold Schwarzenegger having served as President of the United Statesafter a Constitutional amendment was passed allowing him to The Demolished Man for the office due to The Demolished Man popularity. Coincidentally, a day short of ten years after the film's release, the California gubernatorial recall election was scheduled. The election saw Schwarzenegger actually begin a political career as the 38th Governor of California from until Shortly after he was elected, an " Arnold Amendment " did get proposed. One of the film's focal points is Taco Bell The Demolished Man the sole surviving restaurant chain after "the franchise wars. Lines were re-dubbed and logos changed during post-production. A subplot involving Spartan's daughter was cut for pacing reasons. This led to some confusion at test screenings, where audiences thought Sandra Bullock was the daughter, and reacted negatively to the scene where they were about to have sex. In the novel, a terrorist and his enemy, a counter-terrorism soldier, are cryogenically frozen and awakened in the 22nd century to find violence has been purged from society. He did not file a lawsuit, as it would have been too expensive for him to hire a lawyer and fight against major Hollywood forces in the United States. He also claimed that Hollywood has plagiarized works of many Eastern European writers after the fall of the Iron Curtainand that he knows the person he claims to be responsible for illegally selling his idea to the filmmakers. The title theme is a heavier remix of the song originally recorded by Grace Jones and written by Sting during his time as frontman for The Police. The song was first released in Marchas an advance single from Jones's fifth album, Nightclubbing. Sting released an EP featuring this song and other live tracks, entitled Demolition Man. Elliot Goldenthal composed the score for the film. The film debuted at No. Film critic The Demolished Man Ebert was asked why this film was considered a success, but Last Action Hero was considered a flop, despite similar budgets and The Demolished Man office grosses. Ebert concluded it was due to expectations, and that the film was seen as a comeback for Stallone whose career had been flagging, whereas Schwarzenegger failed to live up to his previous record breaking successes. InSylvester Stallone 's loan-out company filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. The site's consensus reads: "A better-than-average sci-fi shoot-em-up with a satirical undercurrent, Demolition Man is bolstered by The Demolished Man performances by , Wesley Snipes, and Sandra Bullock. Siskel and Ebert At The Movies reviewed the film: Siskel found the film amusing but didn't care for the The Demolished Man sequences and gave it "thumbs down", whereas Ebert enjoyed both the satirical The Demolished Man this film had over other films of this genre and thought the The Demolished Man sequences were good for this type of film, and gave it a "thumbs up". Snyder and his accomplished team" as well as the cinematography of Alex Thomson. He concludes "what's badly missing is a guiding intelligence to lift this disjointed pic from its derivative status. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it a "B-". Despite his low expectations of a Joel Silver production and "the everything-goes-boom school of high-tech action overkill", he found it "an intermittently amusing sci-fi satire" before it switches to full-tilt destruction mode. Gleiberman says "if it's the promise of overwrought violence that lures people into theaters, I suspect it will be the quieter scenes—the ones with a pretense of wit—that keep them satisfied. But while police prefect Lincoln Powell knows Reich is guilty, his telepath's knowledge is a far cry from admissible evidence. There is no denying The Demolished Man Bester has written a top notch SF mystery. I read it many years ago in book form. While the audio is excellent, there were visuals that needed to be seen to understand some of the story. The conversational patterns just got lost without that visual. The overall thrust of the story remained intact; I just missed those little things. The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester is a far future tale of a perfectly planned murder in the context of a society where a portion of humanity The Demolished Man mind reading powers. A rich business tycoon plans the perfect murder of a rival, but things go awry when a witness shows up. The tycoon battles a determined police investigator with the highest esp levels. At the same time, the tycoon is battling a personal demon that haunts his dreams that is partly to blame for his paranoid behaviors. The main sci-fi element is the development of latent "esper" power of the human mind that only some The Demolished Man possess to varying degree "peeping" the conscious, the The Demolished Man, or the subconscious. This effectively precludes someone from lying or hiding information. Major portions of the solar system have been settled, although life in many respects is pretty typical of mid The Demolished Man century the tale is set at the dawn of the 24th century. The use of logic computer for assessing adequacy of a criminal case for prosecution was an intriguing application for its time. Finally, mental illness and criminal punishment is treated by "demolition" whereby the subject's mental construct is broken down and permitted to re-establish itself through an accelerated childhood that recapitulates normal growth. The narration is well done with excellent character distinction of both genders. Pacing and tone are well aligned to the story, especially given the multiple scenes of nightmares and other related mental instabilities. Expected all the reveals. The unflagging paternalistic quality The Demolished Man the story is cringe-worthy at this point in history and just makes it difficult to feel like the people are real humans and not just caricatures. Sure it was realistic for the times, but times have changed and this inability of misogyny and to stand the test of time is just demonstrative of its drawbacks. Not saying it's not worth reading. It's a piece of history. The telepathic world that's built is somewhat impressive, even if shudderingly patriarchal. Just keep in mind, it's dated and The Demolished Man shows not only with its misogyny but also with its outmoded psychological concepts. I didn't like it as much as The Stars My Destination however the story is still very entertaining and way ahead of it's time. The winner of the very first Hugo, but it could have been written today. I didn't expect a sci fi novel from to hold up as well as this one does, and while there are the odd tells with regard The Demolished Man assumptions about future technology, and one or two romantic interactions that might warrant a sidelong glance, the story is wildly innovative, and the writing superb. Anyone who has seen Babylon 5 knows it pays homage to Alfred Bester, but it's remarkable just how directly it and The Demolished Man any other book about telepaths is templated on this book in particular.
