Modh, Ivory, women and rajas IVORY, WOMEN AND RAJAS INITIAL COMMENTS ON SOCIAL CHANGE IN AN EAST INDONESIAN BOUNDARY COMMUNITY SANDRA MODH I My research in eastern Indonesia began with a simple question: was it true that a boundary population of a culture group with documented ‘patrilineal’ descent groups did in fact, as rumours claimed, have ‘matrilineal’ descent groups.1 In this investigation, local perceptions of kinship and descent are certainly not irrelevant, though they are not the main focus of interest. Kinship features are here closely interwoven with qualities that are central to modes of livelihood, conceptions of life and ideology.2 The rumours of a matrilineal boundary population dated back half a century already, and to cap it all their prime source (Kennedy, see below) had been shot dead on Java not long after he had made his notes. The whole thing breathed of Miss Marple and the curse of Tutankhamun, and although there was admittedly neither plot nor curse, I could not resist the temptation of picking up the trail. This article considers the social power of ivory in relation to a particular Indonesian rajadom, and the changing social position of women in relation to that of men within the context of recent historical change in social practice and ideology. II The east Indonesian boundary population in question belongs to a culture and language group known as Lamaholot. TB Simatupang Kav.38 Jakarta Selatan 12540 Indonesia PRESS RELEASE March 11, 2014 WWF’ Expedition to Solor-Alor: Identifying Baseline Data to Assess the Effectiveness of Marine Protected Area Alor, East Nusa Tenggara – In the next three weeks, from March 13 to April 2, 2014, WWF-Indonesia will lead a marine expedition team to two marine protected areas in Alor and East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. The expedition aims to collect baseline data on the effectiveness of marine conservation areas in protecting fish populations and hard coral cover in the two regions. Marine and Fisheries Research Agency-Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Alor and East Flores Fisheries Offices, and Indonesian Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) also participate on the expedition. Protected areas are established as part of strong management tools worldwide. The areas however have several variations regarding social and ecological objectives. Through the Solor-Alor expedition, it is hoped that the effectiveness of marine conservation areas in protecting biodiversity, natural environment, and occupant ecosystems can be identified and the positive impacts on local communities can be measured. Alor marine reserve with a total area of 400,080 hectares was established by Alor regent in 2010, and the marine area in East Flores Regency that covers 150,000 hectare areas has been reserved since 2013 by East Flores regent to be designated as marine protected areas, providing lasting protection for part or all of the natural and cultural resources therein. -

It is thus a distribution study, in line with others that have looked at the distribution of musical elements in Indonesia (Kunst 1939), the Philippines (Maceda 1998), Oceania (McLean 1979, 1994, 2014), and the region peripheral to the South China Sea (Revel 2013). With the exception of McLean, these studies have focused exclusively on material culture, namely musical instruments, tracing their geographical distribution and the vernacular terms associated with them. The aim has been to reveal cultural continuities and discontinuities and propose hypotheses about prehistoric settlement and culture contact in Insulindia and Oceania. -

This paper aimed at identifying the tourism potentials that can be developed into community-based tourism, identifying the factors inhibiting community-based tourism in Lembata, and creating effective models for the development of Community based tourism in Lembata. The research design used in the current research was descriptive qualitative. The procedure was based on research and development principles, that is by applying Board and Gall theory. the adaptation and modifications stages are as follows, collecting data in the field, analyzing the data,formulating a model of development of community-based tourism in Lembata. The techniques of collecting data were observation, interviews, and documentation. The techniques of analysis data were data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that tourism potential that can be developed into community-based tourism in the Lembata include, natural tourism, marine tourism, culture tourism. The factors inhibiting community-based tourism in Lembata were Infrastructure does not support, the community participation is still low in the developing tourism in Lembata, Output of the research is designing development model of the community-based tourism as a strategy for the local economic empowerment in Lembata. Because of the target, the government collaborates with tourism assistants in managing 26 Tourism Villages in Lembata Regency. This study aims to describe the role of tourism assistants in accompany development of 26 Tourism Villages in Lembata Regency. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data obtained from observations, interviews with key informants, and documentation during the activities. The results showed that the role of tourism companion consists of various contributions summarized in four roles, namely as a facilitator, as an educator and motivator, as a liaison as well as a coordinator and mediator, and as an implementer of monitoring and evaluation of each mentoring program being implemented. Selama Abad ke-17 hingga abad ke-18, Kerajaan Larantuka bersekutu dengan Portugis dan para Kapiten Mayor dari keluarga Portugis Hitam, keluarga da Hornay dan da Costa untuk menghadapi kekuatan Belanda VOC dan Kerajaan Muslim Lima Pantai Solor Watan Lema .Pada abad ke-19, Kerajaan Larantuka dipaksa menerima hasil perjanjian Portugal dan Belanda yang dimulai sejak 1851 dan disetujui pada 20 April 1859. Perjanjian tersebut berisi penyerahan wilayah Flores dan Kepulauan Solor-Alor kepada Belanda. Sejak saat itu, Kerajaan Larantuka menjadi kerajaan bawahan Pemerintah Hindia Belanda. Belanda kemudian mengikat kontrak dengan Kerajaan Larantuka pada 28 Juni 1861, namun Korte Verklaring tersebut masih memberikan keleluasaan Kerajaan Larantuka untuk menjalankan pemerintahan secara otonom/zelfbesturende.Raja-raja Larantuka sejak 1851 melakukan perubahan strategi politik sekutu dan seterunya sebagai upaya tetap mempertahankan kedaulatannya. -

Raja Lorenzo II a Catholic Kingdom in the Dutch East Indies
RESEARCH Don Lorenzo Diaz Vieira Godinho of Larantuka, Flores, became Raja on 14 September 1887 and was deposed on 1 July 1904. During his reign he was the hope of the local Jesuit mission and often the despair of colonial civil authorities. In the end, as the Dutch leached power from the rajas, Lorenzo’s reign marked the end of any pretence of independent power. Raja Lorenzo II A Catholic kingdom in the Dutch East Indies R. H.
