Foster 108 VI PREFACE The record of scientific and material progress in America has been fairly well established, but in the fine arts we are just beginning to find ourselves, and it is important that the story of our beginnings along these lines should be gathered together and preserved. Stephen Foster occupies a unique position in the history of music, not only of this country, but of the world. No other single individual produced so many of those songs which are called "folk-songs," by which is meant songs that so perfectly express the mood and spirit of the people that they become a part of the life of all the "folk" and speak as the voice, not of an indi- vidual, but of all. -

A structure of stone and steel has been erected, and dedicated to the memory of the modest, unassuming composer who wrote songs which have become the heritage, not only of his native America, but of the world. Who has not heard and loved Stephen's Old Folks at Home, My Old Kentucky Home, Massa's in de Cold Ground, and Old Black Joe? Who can not sing them? His plantation melodies were intended to portray one race of people, one section of our country, one period in our history, yet through his genius he succeeded in creating songs which have leaped the boundaries of space and time, and express universal thoughts and emotions. The best of his sentimental ballads are still sung today: his hauntingly beautiful Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, his tender Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Beautiful Dreamer recall the charm of an age which is past. -

A Longing for What Once Was…or Was It?: Nostalgia in the Songs of Stephen Collins Foster A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Jessica L. Frost BM, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD Abstract During the Industrial Revolution (c. 1820–1870), many Americans experienced feelings of nostalgia and longed for the simple life of plow and hearth after their move to industrial centers. At the height of the Industrial Revolution, Stephen Foster immortalized his own sentiments in his songs, which struck a chord for many Americans. In order to synthesize the subject of nostalgia found in Foster’s songs, including the longing for a place, person, or time, this study draws on current nostalgia scholarship from comparative literature, including Svetlana Boym’s theory of restorative and reflective nostalgia found in her 2001 book, The Future of Nostalgia. Mapping this theory onto Foster’s songs contextualizes their sentiments, and places them within the cultural framework of time and place. Susan Key’s 1995 American Music article, “Sound and Sentimentality: Nostalgia in the Songs of Stephen Foster,” represents the only previous scholarship on this topic. My research expands Key’s consideration of how Foster’s musical style invokes nostalgia by demonstrating that the lyrics and topics of these songs illustrate nostalgia as well. i Copyright 2012 © by Jessica L. 2021-4123-AJHA – 20 FEB 2021 1 Stephen Foster’s Songs Revisited 2 3 The songs of Stephen Collins Foster have achieved considerable fame (but 4 not fortune) for their creator from the time of their conception in the 1840s- 5 1860s to a century later. The degree to which they captured the public’s 6 attention over the years has been marked by the prevailing cultural and 7 historical mores of the time. Many of the earlier songs received their 8 christening in the popular minstrel shows of the nineteenth century, and 9 were performed by white musicians in blackface singing in the pseudo-black 10 accents then in vogue. They were referred to euphemistically as “Ethiopian” 11 or “plantation” by way of separating them from the more traditional ballads 12 which employed standard English. With such significant events as the 13 passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts during the 1960s, the 14 desegregation movement, and, in more recent times, the Unite the Right rally 15 in Charlottesville, Virginia and the movement to remove Confederate statues 16 from places of honor, the cultural lines have been drawn such as to affect 17 changes in what is and what is not acceptable in the arts. Stephen Foster 18 and his songs have been affected in a negative way by events associated with 19 ever-changing attitudes of the audience. Thus, songs which contain the N 20 word and the D word (see the article to follow) have been removed from 21 performances in the public sphere accept as they have been sanitized. -

Foster captured the essential dynamics of the antebellum mind and heart, which accounted for the immense popularity of his music even during the composer’s lifetime. Consequently, by placing Foster and his music within the historical context of his own antebellum society, culture, and history, I sought explanations for the following: the function of sentimentality in Foster’s tear-inducing parlor songs and in his blackface plantation songs; the Copperhead, anti-Lincoln politics of the Foster family; Foster’s non-companionate marriage to the high-tempered
