CONNECT SELECT WEEKEND EDITION a Wide Selection of Interesting and Trending Stories – Rip ‘Em, Read ‘Em and Post ‘Em! FRIDAY, MARCH 5Th, 2021 CONNECT SELECT WEEKEND EDITION A wide selection of interesting and trending stories – rip ‘em, read ‘em and post ‘em! FRIDAY, MARCH 5th, 2021 TODAY IS… NATIONAL EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY (first Friday in March) – A thank you note from the boss would be nice. A crisp ‘hundred’ would be nicer. NATIONAL CHEESE DOODLE DAY – Get ready for a whole bunch of orange fingers! The origin of the cheese doodle is debatable, but it’s thought they were born in Wisconsin in the 1930s - I mean, where else would you expect to find an invention so cheesy? NATIONAL MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DAY – Either a day to raise awareness about a truly debilitating disorder, or for looking within to find the ‘true’ you. You can also take a minute to scoff at your two-faced ‘ex’ NATIONAL DRESS IN BLUE DAY (first Friday in March) – You’ll probably see a lot of people wearing something blue today. It’s supposed to raise awareness for colon cancer, one of the deadliest types of cancer. NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING (first Friday in March) – Encouraging everyone to take a break from technology, electronics and social media (good luck with that!) SATURDAY IS… NATIONAL DENTIST DAY – Raise a glass (of mouthwash) to your dentist. Because sticking your head in someone else’s mouth for a living can’t be easy. HERE’S THE SOUND OF A DENTIST’S DRILL NATIONAL OREO COOKIE DAY – The Oreo was born in New York City in 1912. Back then, they came in a glass jar and a pound of them cost a quarter. The design on the face of the cookie is trademarked. DID YOU KNOW…Oreos were made by the National Biscuit Company, which had to change its name because there was already another NBC out there. So they just mushed the words together to make ‘NaBisCo’. HERE’S AN OLD OREO COMMERCIAL JINGLE NATIONAL DRESS DAY – Because sometimes you just don’t wanna wear pants! Ball gowns and evening dresses were invented in the 15th century. Back then they were heavy, hot and made of wool which made dancing in them about as graceful as dragging around a mattress. NATIONAL FROZEN FOOD DAY – Without the invention of the freezer, most of us would starve! Clarence Birdseye patented the ‘flash freezing’ process in 1927. Back then, only 8 percent of American households had a fridge. SUNDAY IS… NATIONAL CEREAL DAY – Long before Cap’n Crunch and Frosted Flakes, cereal was a modest invention that started with a hand-cranked oat grinder and a dream. The pieces were so hard to chew they had to be soaked in milk overnight. In 1863, a surgeon named Harvey Kellogg invented granola and then corn flakes. A few years later, Grape-Nuts would become the first product to offer a discount coupon. NATIONAL FLAPJACK DAY – Flapjacks are either another way to say ‘pancake’ or something completely different. Early American settlers ate flapjacks that were made of rolled oats, honey and butter, and baked in an oven. In England they also call them ‘oat bars.’ BIRTHDAYS: FRIDAY, MARCH 5: EVA MENDES, 47 – Actress. Dear Monroe Township School Community, This Messenger issue reflects a time before my arrival but I can attest to the kindness, generosity of time, and willingness of the Monroe community to give of themselves to a better purpose. All this while proceeding through a pandemic. At MTPS it is important to recognize that each and every child brings value to our classroom, and that we bear great responsibility to ensure they feel safe and welcomed (by our staff and our students). We believe that modeling and teaching students how to be kind and respectful to others can make a positive impact in our school communities. We will continue to promote kindness, compassion and respect for others. In light of our current challenges, it is important that all of us remember to bring kindness, patience, and flexibility to our interactions. The challenges brought on by the pandemic and life in general are not easy, but we will support each other. I want to thank all of our staff, our students, and our parents/guardians for applying the virtues of kindness in conversations, communications, and interactions of all kinds.

By Rachel Oh Th e start of October signals many things: colder nights, changing leaves, approaching early action/decision deadlines for seniors, and of course, the annual Pink Out football game! Versing Pennsbury this year on October 18th, the night is sure to be fi lled with excitement and is an easy opportunity to express school spirit through a great cause, with a sea of pink shirts swallowing the bleachers and the fi eld every year. Pink Out Shirts, designed by our wonderful Key Club, will be sold during the week of the 18th in Cafe A. However, instead of collecting the profi ts, the Key Club will donate all of the revenue from t-shirt sales to four foundations: Th e Breathing Room, Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, Unite for Her, and Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Th e Breathing Room specializes in supporting and caring for local families aff ected by cancer, while Unite for Her is committed to help women diagnosed with ovarian or breast cancer through free therapy. Living Beyond Breast Cancer provides information and off ers either online or in-person programs to those aff ected by breast cancer, and the Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, associated with Jeff erson Health, is an advanced medical center that personalizes in caring for any type of cancer. From the various missions these foundations strive towards, it’s evident that a $10 shirt can go a long way. Th e game lasts from 7pm-9pm at the Schwarzman Stadium, and it is a fun yet rewarding way to spend a Friday night.
