2. President’s Report

Looking back to when the under 21 team played Wellington College for the Steve Letica cup at the start of the season I was looking forward to a full season of rugby. Then along came covid- 19 and rugby was put on hold and we all wondered if there would be a rugby season in 2020. Full credit must go to the Wellington for the season we finally were able to compete in. What a great season it turned out to be for OBU. The premier team had a very good first round and, in my opinion, although they lost 3 games, all of them could have gone either way. Them they made the finals and played two brilliant games against Marist and Norths to win the Jubilee Cup.

Both under 21 sides performed well, with the Green side winning the championship and the Black team making the finals. Our Premier Reserve team also did well to make & win their final. Everyone who was at the club rooms on finals night will tell you that being part of a winning club is something to be proud of.

Your committee was very active throughout the year taking care of the day to day running of the club and I thank Jaesen Sumner who is stepping down this year as Chairman for his many years chairing the committee. Marie Chivers has also worked hard for a number of years as Club Captain and is stepping down as she has moved out of Wellington. Thank you, Marie. There was one highlight to come out of covid though, with a great job being done during lockdown to have Zoom meetings in our ‘virtual club rooms’ every Saturday night during the lockdown. It was incredible the list of guest speakers able to give up their time and join us, you will see the list later in the report. To every one of them I say thank you.

The Premiers were able to play some of their games at Wellington College and we are hopeful we will again play there this coming season. Doug Catley made a superb contribution to Wellington College that enabled them to turn the ground around and we benefited. We are looking forward to increasing OBU’s use on this full-sized ground for a lot of OBU team to experience it. The season would not have been what it was without the hard work of all the coaches, mangers and volunteers. Thank you to every one of you. Next year is looking good and hopefully will be COVID-19 free. I trust you have all had an enjoyable Christmas with family and friends.

3. From the Patrons

Thank you for the ongoing opportunity to be a patron of OBU. It is a privilege to hold this role. Congratulations to the whole club for your success during the 2020 season. It was a challenging year with COVID-19 having an impact on community and school sports programmes but we were delighted to host two OBU Premier matches on the ‘Quad Tournament’ configured Wellington College Number 1 Field, with excellent results for the home team. We are very grateful to Doug Catley for his financial support of this initiative.

Wellington College looks forward to continuing to extend these opportunities for OBU in the years to come & to continue to build on our historic partnership

Gregor Fountain Principal, Wellington College

2020 was a unique and challenging year, with most aspects of our lives affected by the COVID 19 global pandemic. It was pleasing that the lockdown we experienced was relatively brief and we were able to enjoy a degree of normality for much of the year, especially on the sports fields.

Congratulations to the club for another excellent year on and off the field. It was great to see students from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington at the forefront of these achievements and gratifying to see the Academy continuing to function strongly under adverse circumstances.

I particularly enjoyed the ‘virtual clubrooms’ and appreciated the way in which video conferencing technology ensured students and club members remained connected. Of course, 2021 will bring its own set of challenges but I am sure OBU and the University will take them in their stride as we continue to strengthen our bonds and deliver our respective programmes to all members.

Grant Guilford Vice Chancellor Victoria University of Wellington

4. Chair’s Report

2020 was a successful year for Wellington College Old Boys and Victoria University of Wellington Football Club Incorporated (“OBU”).

The season was scheduled to commence on 23 March 2020, however the start date was delayed indefinitely due to Covid-19. While we were uncertain on what impact Covid-19 would have on our community game we soon grappled with several significant issues from whether we would have any rugby competition during 2020 at all to the financial impact a “no game season” would have on OBU, our fellow Wellington Clubs and WRFU. We are grateful that our rugby community, local and central Government collaborated and worked together to ensure one of the most competitive rugby seasons was held in 2020.

The Covid-19 outbreak also had an impact in terms of gathering at our club rooms, the Cambridge Hotel, but that was ameliorated with our virtual club rooms which took place during lockdown at 5.00 pm on Saturday evenings. Richard Boag arranged several fantastic speakers for the virtual club rooms, resulting in many enjoyable Saturday evenings on Zoom with beers, wine and nibbles to hand. Speakers included:

- The right Honourable Grant Robertson, Minister of Finance; - Nick Farr-Jones, former Wallaby Captain; - Winston Peters the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; and - Mark Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of NZRU. - All parties involved were happy to give back to the community game during the lockdown period. You can see the full list of the fantastic guests later in the report.

Once the season got underway, OBU enjoyed one of its most successful seasons on record. Regarding the men’s premier team, the Jubilee Cup was secured once again, with a dominant performance against Norths in the Jubilee Cup final. During the regular season, the premiers retained the Marc Verhoeven Memorial Trophy (Petone), The Beet Algar Rosebowl (Poneke), Dean Gifford Memorial Cup (Wellington), Ken Douglas Trophy (Norths), and the Peter Dunford Cup (Wainuiomata). Representative Honours again went and Ben May in the while Teariki Ben-Nicholas joined the Highlanders.

OBU also had a large contingent in the Wellington Lions including Teariki Ben-Nicholas, Caleb Delaney, Wes Goosen, Callum Harkin, Taine Plumtree, and Semisi (James) Poloniati. Seamus Hurley-Langton was picked up by the Manawatū Turbos. Caleb Delaney, Seamus Hurley-Langton, Taine Plumtree and Morgan Poi joined the Hurricane Hunters while Caleb, Seamus and Taine joined the Hurricanes under 20 team.

Several 2020 WRFU awards were also received by OBU and our Club members. These include:

- Sam Reid - Co-winner of the WRFU Billy Wallace Men’s Best & Fairest Award; - Montana Heslop – Co-Winner WRFU Women’s Best & Fairest Award; - Peter Scott - Lifetime Contribution Salver; - Caleb Delany - Ken Comber Cup and WRFU Academy Player of the Year.

Return to Contents Page 7

2020 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents

Several other trophies were locked away, as noted above: - The Jubilee Cup - Premier Men’s; - The HD Morgan Memorial Cup - Premier Reserve 5-8 2nd Round; - The Paris Memorial – Under 21 Green 1st Division 1st Round; - John E Kelly Memorial – Under 21 Green 1st Division 2nd Round cup; - OBU Dewar Shield for the Most Championship Points.

During early 2020, the Club also underwent a financial review undertaken by Ted Thomas. A number of alterations and changes were made to the way OBU manages its finances and some historic matters tidied up. This resulted in the realisation that OBU needed to engage accountants to assist it in its financial management given the size of the Club and the many transactions the Club entered into each year. The workload in this area was significant and greater resources were required than could be provided by volunteers. As such, OBU engaged the services of BDO in Wellington who have provided significant assistance and continue to do so across all financial management matters at OBU.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, our revenue reduced from $315,752.00 to $240,932.00. This reduction was targeted to ensure that OBU stayed within its means. Our total expenses were $222,551.00. A net surplus was achieved of $41,697.00 following the writing off of a historic GST issue dating back some 10 years. As at 31 August 2020, OBU sits with an equity position of $76,069.00. This is a strong result in one of the most challenging years OBU has faced.

Notwithstanding the financial performance of the Club in 2020, several common issues remain which will provide challenges in the years ahead. Player numbers and income have not been growing and access to the required level of charity funding remains challenging. There has been a lot of discussion around grass roots rugby in New Zealand and the gap that has developed between secondary school rugby, clubs and the professional ranks. The future of rugby at our level will involve OBU maintaining its strong relationship with Wellington College and Victoria University. There is a current line of thinking that clubs need to take over some secondary school rugby. I suspect that movement will grow in the coming years and we will see a closer collaboration between secondary school rugby and club rugby.

New Zealand rugby also needs to ensure that funding and resources are allocated to clubs via their respective unions. This is an area where our national and local unions are failing by some margin. Many clubs are beholden to charities for a large percentage of their operational costs. Other sources of income and capital will need to be sourced.

It wouldn’t be possible for OBU to operate without the support of our sponsors. These include: - The Cambridge Hotel; - The Lion Foundation; - NZCT; - Four Winds; - Infinity Foundation; - First Sovereign; - Air Rescue; and - Pelorus Trust;

Also, grateful thanks to all those who gave a donation during the covid lock down period, especially Doug Catley, Ken Douglas, Ian Waddell, Noel Phillips, Stephen Robertson, John Shewan, Steven Atkin, Roger Drummond, Jim Poy & Roland Sarten. All contributions were put to good use to keep the club afloat during this time of great uncertainty.

Several individual club members have joined the Capricorn Club which provides direct assistant to OBU while many of our OBU related businesses have jumped on board and sponsored playing jerseys. These funds benefit OBU directly. I would also encourage all OBU members to follow and support the work of the OBU Foundation.

I also wish to extend thanks to our Committee and volunteers who work tirelessly with little reward in ensuring the effective and orderly operations of our club. If you see our Committee members or volunteers at the Bridge, buy them a drink!

Finally, I have decided that it is an appropriate time to stand down as Chair and hand over the reins to someone with fresh ideas for the next phase of OBU’s evolution. It has been a privilege to be Chair of New Zealand’s greatest rugby club and I have enjoyed the on-field success and off-field camaraderie. I wish to warmly welcome Pete McFarlane to the Chair’s seat and wish him all the best in driving the Club’s success in the coming years.

See you on the side-line in 2021.

Jaesen Sumner Chair OBU

On 23 March 2020, the New Zealand Government issued an Epidemic Notice under section 5 of the Epidemic Preparedness Act 2006 to combat the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The result of this pandemic has been a substantial reduction in economic activity throughout the world, as governments have introduced measures (such as the closure of all non-essential business and the cancellation of all public events) in a bid to halt, or at least slow, transmission of the virus. At the time of signing the financial statements, there is uncertainty about how much further economic activity will fall and how long the period of reduced economic activity will last.

The Executive Committee have assessed the likely impact of COVID-19 on the club and have concluded that, for the 12 months from the date of signing the performance report, COVID-19 will not impact the ability of the club to continue operating.

8. WRFU Delegate’s Report

Being new to the role this year, firstly, I would like to acknowledge and thank Ian Cuff – both for his efforts over a number of years appearing on OBU’s behalf on the Rugby Board (including sitting on various sub-committees), as well as taking the time for a careful handover. Ian’s timing in exiting the role was, however, excellent for him – as not long thereafter the country was plunged into COVID-19 lockdown.

The subsequent suspension of the start of the club rugby season was only one of a number of pressing matters dealt with at that time, with innumerable Zoom calls and updates as the larger WRFU organisation (not just the Rugby Board) worked manfully to deal with the fall-out. Not least of all in this was the severe impact of funding from community trusts being abruptly halted. The impact of this on the WRFU has been well publicised, with a significant cost-cutting exercise needing to occur with urgency. Regrettably, this included a number of staff redundancies. As against that background, it really was credit to the efforts of remaining WRFU staff and the many Rugby Board delegates and other volunteers involved, that saw a truncated club rugby season in place and able to commence at the end of June. And what a successful season it turned out to be for OBU! Congratulations again to all of the coaches, players and management teams.

Other significant matters addressed by the Rugby Board included the scheduled review of the Club structure and the senior club season. Given the challenges with team numbers post- COVID, 2021 has been designated a “transition and recovery year”. This has meant a number of temporary relaxations around previous Premier status and eligibility conditions. It has also included a new (again temporary) structure for the 2021 Men’s Premier competition, with a full Swindale Shield round (where every club plays every other club) and a shortened four week ‘NRL-style’ finals series.

The scheduled review remains on foot, however, and will now aim to be concluded and with more permanent changes (if any) put in place for the 2022-2024 seasons. Members with thoughts on and/or input for the review should make them known to me.

9. Junior Club Convenor’s Report

2020 has been a challenging season for all in rugby. Covit-19 disrupted the season with games commencing on June 20. This resulted in 11 games played which included playing during the school holidays. Along with the restriction in spectator numbers and contact tracing made for a demanding season.

We ended up with only three teams, Un12, Un9 and Un7. This was disappointing. Having 49 players register we had to combine age groups with the un6 players joining with the un7, un10 with un9 and un8 and the Un 12 team of last year combining with Johnsonville. The numbers registered were down on last year but combining age groups allowed us to have strong numbers in each of the sides. Un12 Vikings. Coached by Troy Newton, Carl Grant and Peter McFarlane. The team combined with Johnsonville Un12 and thanks to the Trina Coombs from Johnsonville for managing the side and help make it a success.

Un9 Steinmetz. Coached by Anthony Taylor and Assisted by Brian Steel. The side had good numbers and was a combination of un10, Un9 & un8 players. They performed very well and the skill level improved as the season progressed. Un7. Coached by Callum Edwards. This team consisted of both Un6 & Un7 players. Again, the side had a large squad and all enjoyed the experience.

This year we continued our School Holiday Programme at the end of January. Thanks to Tomasi Palu and members of the OBU Rugby Academy for running the programme. It was highly successful with 32 children participating. We intend to run another one in 2021. We had intended to run a Un3 & Un 4 programme during the season but this did not get off the ground. It will be a priority in 2021.

WRFU have now extended the Rippa programme to UN8/9, UN9/10 and could be UN11/12. The games this year were played on a Friday night. This is one area that we should be growing our club. It gives players the opportunity to participate in a rugby environment who don’t want to play tackle and can be still connected to the game.

We are formulating a strategic programme for 2021. The objective to give the Junior club more exposure at primary schools, making sure that we give more support to parents in coaching, connecting with ex-players and their families, connecting with the University and Wellington College Old Boys Association

I would like to thank all the Coaches and those who assisted with the teams over the season along with Richard Boag and Dave Loveridge I look forward to seeing all the players back in 2021 with their friends so that OBU Kids goes from strength to strength.

10. NZ Universities Delegate's Report

Like all things in 2020, the New Zealand University Rugby programme took a hit resulting in the cancellation of our tour to Japan due to COVID-19.

With some quick work from NZU team management the team assembled to play a highly rated Canterbury Metro Selection on Tuesday 6 October going down 34-36 in a hard fought yet expansive encounter and later played a Jerry Cross XV on the 9th October winning 29-17. Two good matches played in true NZU spirit by teams put together in tight timeframes.

Whilst COVID restrictions heavily impacted the time and breadth of selection, the NZU selection team was able to put together a competitive team heavily made up of Auckland and Lincoln University complemented by players from Massey and Canterbury Universities respectfully. Due to competition timings and representative commitments OBU didn’t have the representation we would normally have but look to rectify this with some of our top talent in 2021.

There was excellent news for the continuity of NZU Rugby with Peter Conley, CEO of ANZCO, advising that ANZCO and Nissui have agreed to extend their sponsorship of NZU Rugby for a further three years from 1 April, 2020, with additional sponsorship aimed at the development of Women’s University rugby. In other exciting news NZU Rugby stalwart Sir Derek Lardelli was knighted for his services to Maori art.

With international fixtures highly unlikely in the year ahead, NZU remains focused on delivering a quality Rugby programme that continues to develop the brightest talent that out clubs have to offer and carry on the fine and unique traditions on NZU Rugby.

12. Reserve Grade Convenor's Report

Reserve Grade 2020 was badly affected by COVID 19 in that one division was created which meant that there was a large number of teams with a vast difference in capability.

OBU fielded 4 teams again with the Righteous Brothers picking up the Wolfpack players who did not have a league to play in after a WRFU reshuffle, to form the ‘Righteous Pack’. The Ginners, 69ers and Teds all fielded strong teams with good numbers.

However, given the lack of a finals’ series and the disparity in capability, the OBU teams quickly focussed on the Ruru Shield.

All 3 games were a fantastic advertisement for Ruru and Reserve Grade rugby with the Ginners defending the shield twice against the Righteous Pack and in a very close game v the Sixty Niners.

It wasn’t to be for the Ginners though in their efforts to go back-to-back with the Ruru shield. In the final game of the season the Teds deservedly won a hard-fought affair taking advantage of an unusually poor Ginners lineout performance to win by a score locking the Shield away for the summer.

It is hoped that there will be two divisions with promotion and relegation at end of round one this year with a finals’ series in both divisions. No doubt there will also be some great Ruru games to look forward to in 2021.

13. Wellington College Liaison’s Report

HE Faustp Crozet with Jan Christensen – Steve Letica’s sister

It was congratulations to OBU Colts Green and Colts Black who overcame two spirited Wellington College teams in the annual Letica Cup matches held at Boyd-Wilson Field Saturday 14 March. It was a special day with members of Steve Letica’s family present not just on the side lines, but playing. Congratulations to Colts Captain Joe Sharland who picked up not only the Letica Cup from Jan Christensen (Steve’s sister) for the winning team, but also the Calvin Wright Memorial for being player of the match. It was great Martyn Wright (Calvin’s brother) was on hand to present it. The festivities continued at the Cambridge afterwards with a great turn out from the Colts teams to a function that featured President Murray Anderson presenting HE Fausto Crozet (Argentine Ambassador) with his Honorary Vice President badge followed by an excellent presentation from the Ambassador about his homeland. This was capped with a superb tango demonstration, featuring long time OBU Supporter Jim Poy’s daughter & Jan Christensen gave the club a poignant summary of Steve Letica’s life.

2020 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents OBU continues to be well represented on the Wellington College Old Boys Association with Ted Thomas (WCOBA President) & Richard Boag on the Executive Committee & joined recently by a former ‘Pink Ginner’ Ian Harden who has taken on the Treasurer’s role.

Both the club and Wellington College were very pleased with the Premier matches that were played on Wellington College this year. With the #1 ground being oriented to ‘Quadrangular Tournament’ dimensions has meant the OBU Premiers will be able to fit in more matches each year at a club ‘spiritual home’. It is hoped that more OBU teams will be able to experience this in future as the Wellington College Rugby season dictates opportunities.

14. Capricorn Club Captain’s Report

2020 started on a very positive note for the Capricorn Club with a contribution and organisation of an event to assist with Wellington College’s planned tour to Argentina. This coincided with the Letica Cup matches played between Wellington College 1st & 2nd XV squads and the OBU Colts squads. The aftermatch function featured an insightful memorial talk by Jan Christensen, Steve Letica’s sister and the presentation from HE Fautso Crozet, Ambassador of Argentina. Thanks are due to Capricorn Club member, Jim Poy who arranged for his daughter and partner to provide an excellent Tango demonstration.

Unfortunately, things turned for the worst from then on with first Wellington College’s Argentina trip being cancelled due to covid-19 and then the shutdown of Rugby and face to face socialising for club members. The Capricorn Club was front and centre in organising the OBU Virtual Clubrooms (see article later in this Annual Report) which featured a tremendous array of impressive people who volunteered their free time to be the ‘focal guest’ each week. The club and those who ‘Zoomed in’ on these sessions are most grateful for their interesting and entertaining insights. With ‘Chatham House Rules’ to the fore, we all learned a bit more than normal!

With concerns about the financial effects on the club not being fully understood due to covid, a decision was made to curtail the weekly draws until the picture became clearer. There was one draw made once socialising could recommence and the forbearance of club members in forgoing further draws is much appreciated.

With that in mind, there was not much activity in terms of financial support or other projects that the Capricorn Club is designed to assist with, however, the Capricorn Club continued to assist with the bank rolling of the DHC Scholarships commitment the club has with Wellington College.

2021 will bring further challenges and the club Executive will be looking to members to participate in planning and future direction of the Capricorn Club to help meet its potential. Our continuing thanks to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and out-going CEO John Milford & staff for their ongoing support in making their monthly networking functions available for club members. These are excellent and all Capricorn Club members are encouraged to take advantage of these networking occasions.

An exercise was also undertaken to ‘scan’ well over 100 historic newsletters from WCOB (‘Follow Up’s), VUW (‘Rugby News – VUW’) and the early ‘Harlequins’ (‘In Touch’) days. In addition, many team and other photos from the walls of the old WCOB clubrooms and Andy Braddock’s collection o have similarly been scanned. Copies of the scans are available by email from Richard Boag, however, it is hoped in the not too distant future these types of historic records will be available to members ‘on line’.

15. OBU / VUW Academy

The challenges of 2020 have seen the Academy thrive and reinforced its value as a holistic programme for university student rugby players. The Academy programme quickly adjusted to the COVID-19 world, by moving to a virtual programme having zoom sessions for the online speakers as well as online fitness sessions for the first half of the programme. Despite not coming together as an Academy cohort prior to lockdown, students were able to bond and begin to build a culture as a group, commence their fitness and wellbeing training and conditioning, and hold each other accountable to their goals. By all accounts it was a hugely important source of community, whanau connection & structure for participants in a challenging & uncertain time.

The 2020 programme included 22 athletes; 5 Premier/Premier Reserve players (Jubilee Cup, HD Morgan Memorial Cup 2020 Winners) 10 Colts players (John E Kelly Memorial Cup, Vic Calcinai Memorial Cup 2020 Winners) 7 Impalas players The Academy had 15 players that were part of the four Finals across WRFU Club Finals Day – with the Premiers, Premiers Reserves and Colts Green winning their Finals, and our Colts Black players narrowly losing their Final.

Personal Development, Holistic Wellbeing and Mentoring

The 2020 PD programme saw an impressive range of speakers across a range of topic areas. The calibre of these contributors is testament to the mana of the Academy and continuing to attract them is important in the programme maintaining its quality, as well as continuing to align with OBU Academy’s vision of developing and giving back.

The S&C component is fundamental to the programme’s success and to ensuring it fulfils its aim of being a high-performance Academy that appeals to and provides for performance athletes. In 2020 a dedicated S&C trainer Robbie McNaughton with strong S&C rugby experience was employed to run sessions. These sessions were designed to accommodate the athletes and their varying levels of training experience. Sessions were rugby specific with the aim of improving athletes' strength, speed, and endurance and the program as a whole, saw athletes improve in these key areas. Due to the size of the group and the space required, the sessions were delivered at Club Kelburn which allowed for the athletes to train together at one time, as a team. These elements were valued by the athletes.

Technical Training

The Technical training component of the Academy continued to be well-received by participants in 2020 and again the quality of contributors should be acknowledged and celebrated.

A fundamental challenge within the Academy is the varied level of skills and experience amongst participants, and therefore pitching things at a level that has value for all athletes. Participant feedback demonstrates that the current approach is rising to the challenge well - but it’s important this remains a priority and strategies continue to be explored to ensure the range of needs are well catered for.

One of our many success stories from the Academy is Ty Poe, one of our Academy members who was part of our Premier Club team who won the 2020 Jubilee Cup and is graduating from Victoria University – Te Herenga Waka with a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Criminology and Education.

2020 for the OBU Academy has definitely been a year that will be remembered in history because of how the world has changed in a global pandemic. The uncertainty of this year has shown us that whatever is thrown our way from natural disasters to a pandemic, we still continue to journey in this world. We have had a challenging and successful year on and off the field, with 2021 looking very promising with a good number of applications for the 2021 OBU academy intake. As always thank you to our OBU Club for being part of the journey. Also, the Academy is very grateful and thankful for the Jack Jeff’s Charitable Trust for their ongoing funding and support. We are pleased to have a strong partnership with the Vic Recreation Centre that continues to provide better support and connections each year. Massive thank you to those that have been involved in this year’s 2020 OBU Academy. May you all have a blessed and safe Christmas and Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all in 2021!

16. Premier

2020 was a year like no other with Covid 19 changing things for everyone. Who would have thought that we would end up with a Lockdown, two preseason’s, Tracer Apps and social distancing. That we were able to get a season was great, let alone going on to win our fourth Jubilee Cup in six years.

We had a really good pre-season, with Robbie MacNaughton, our new Strength and Conditioning Coach, making a big difference. The team were ready to take on MSP in the first game of the season, but then we went into lockdown. When lockdown conditions eased, we had a second preseason, and then were excited to take on Poneke in week one. With the condensed season, we had to finish in the top four in Swindale Shield to qualify for the Jubilee Cup.

2020 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents

The team played really well in a lot of the games throughout the season. Highlights included wins over Norths & Petone. Something particularly special this year was playing two games at Wellington College, they were both particularly proud days for Goats that attended the school.

The low light was Josh Thomas, breaking his leg, in our game versus The Axemen, which resulted in him being taken away in an Ambulance and the game being called off. We are pleased to say that Josh is on his way to recovery. Covid 19 rules meant that supporters couldn’t attend most of the games, but it was fantastic that games were live streamed to the Cambridge and members via the internet.

We qualified fourth after the completion of the Swindale Shield, joining other semi-finalists Petone, Norths and Swindale Shield winners, MSP. This meant we travelled to Evans Bay for a semi-final versus MSP. It was an extremely intense game and it was a relief to get the win. This meant we played Norths in the Jubilee Cup Final. The players tackled themselves to a standstill. Josh Gimblett made a massive 37 tackles in the final, proving that defence really does win championships.

It is hard to single out players as there were so many. Sam Reid was co-winner of the Billy Wallace Memorial Trophy as the Best & Fairest player in club rugby at the Wellington Rugby Awards. It was a great season for Sam, who scored 14 tries throughout the season. Shamus Hurley Langton was a key player scoring 11 tries from Number 8. While we missed him in the semi-final and final, we were delighted he got a contract to play with Manawatu in the Mitre 10 Cup. Morgan Poi, Matt Fowler, Paterson Carter and Sam Reid all brought up 50 games for the Prems during the year and they have all contributed a lot to the on and off field success of the team.

We want to thank our awesome coaching team, Jamie Williams, Michael Barnes, and Paddy Gough. Thank you to the rest of the team’s management team; Robbie MacNaughton Johnny Hewitt, Brady Gore and Stephen Isaac. Also, a special acknowledgement to John Plumtree, All Blacks Assistant Coach, who came and shared his knowledge throughout the season. We’d like to acknowledge all the wives, partners, children and families who support not only their partner throughout the long season, but the club, you are a special part of our team. A big thank you also to the sponsors of the club and the Club Executive for all their support throughout the year and we wish outgoing Club Captain Maree Chivers all the best, as she moves from Wellington to spend time with her grandchildren. Bring on 2021!

17. Women’s

Like nearly everything else in 2020 its very easy to look at what we lost, didn’t have, or couldn’t do, but 2020 was also a year we learnt, grew, succeeded and celebrated.

Training sessions started in February with the gradual build for regos and attendance including welcoming several first years who were quickly snapped up into the Academy for development and a couple of international players. Then bang 17th March community rugby suspended and by the end of the month we are in full lock down and many of the team scattered back to the four corners of the country.

At the end of May the call came to retake the field, with a few sessions available we scrambled to pull the squad together before we went to Norths for the 1st game of 8 in a super short women’s season. In the interim we had also lost Coach Mark Tapsell who had to travel overseas, (who’s return before season end was unlikely due to quarantine). Previous (2016) coach Dave Jensen was able to come and help, along with Gina Williamson (just retired on 116

Return to Contents Page 43

2020 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents games), who moved from her background support role to the front line to support Head Coach Tara Horsnell.

With concerns about sustaining numbers (recruited Mittens for a few sessions) we made it to the field on Sat 20th June with 16 players ready to go, with Hiria McRae achieving a major milestone (already the clubs most capped female player) as she ran out for her 140th game. Overall, we welcomed 11 new Impala caps – who were all indispensable when we only were fielding 17-18 players each game.

2020 Impala Academy Impala-cat hybrid, looking to confuse the opposition

We celebrated injury comebacks but also suffered more across the squad with a wide range of issues. An Impala is a natural rebounder, and the ladies showed tenacity and strength to get up and move forward together to get the work done when it counted, week in week out. Our experience players led from the front and guided our new members to learn and grow as well- rounded rugby player.

We had some great wins, some losses that felt like wins, but also a loss or two that we hadn’t expected. We fell victim to our own preconceived notions of prior years’ success, so went back to basics and as a team found an inner strength and an attitude which was built on ‘why are we playing’. The answer was ‘for ourselves, each other and most of all because we enjoy it’. Our mission was to enjoy every game and be a cohesive and supportive team on an off the field. This was our biggest win of the year – well, that and the final successful execution of the choreographed TikTok routine.

On 8th August Losaline Hopoi achieved 50 games and following a protocol change supported by the OBU committee (for which we are grateful) we were able to present her with a club blazer.

We were also able to award current players Emma Hopoi (current caps 63; 50th 11th May, 2019) Moana Solia (current caps 60; 50th 6th April, 2019) and Charlotte Chivers (current caps 85; 50th 9th July, 2016) at the ladies prize giving session.

We named Chloe Te Moananui as player of the year and most improved player was Nicole Wilson. Players player when to Thamsyn Newton who racked up 72 points over 5 games.

We had three current and one past Impala named in the 2020 Pride team, Montana Heslop, Thamsyn Newton, Emily Dalley, and Georgia Daals who was back from Hong Kong, and an international cap for Emma Hopoi who represented Tonga.

And finally, but by no means least, we send further congratulations to our 2020 Captain Montana Heslop awarded the Best and Fairest (joint) in the WRFU 2020 awards and she picked up a contract to play in Hong Kong for 2021, which somewhat made up for the Spanish contract she wasn’t able to take for the 2020 season.

Thank you to our Coaches: Tara, Dave, Gina and Mark, and Thanks to the wider OBU family for their continuing support of the Impalas. The Impalas are ready for 2021!

18. Premier Reserve

Winners HD Morgan Memrial Cup

The commencement of the 2020 rugby season bought a host of challenges for various reasons. Leading the premier reserves through this turbulent time, they were spearheaded by Paul Swift and Greg Mullany who both co-coached and were co-managed by Jackson Smith and unfortunate career ending injury to Clinton Garritys season meant he joined the management team also.

The premier reserves often have a tough task at hand, managing the inter flow of players from the premiers, colts and various social grades. This 2020 season was no different with us using a vast array of numbers or players from a host of different grades and teams which made it challenging to build consistency and combinations. But we thank all the players who contributed to our enjoyable season.

Despite the trying challenges we managed to get off to a reasonable start to the season and win the majority of our first half seasons games. The turning point of the season coming midway through with us pulling off a spectacular 32-30 win over Tawa. This set us up for an exciting run home with a massive boost to the sides confidence and morale and had us sitting in the top 8 with a search of the Ed Chaney. Another exciting 45-41 over HOBM ensured us a top four finish leading into the penultimate week.

A few more close games had us sitting 3rd going into the last week of the round against Ories all set for an Ed Chaney semi-final when things took an unfortunate turn. Losing our captain that week, we opted for a few uncharacteristic decisions in the match and ended up being outclassed by a combative and skilful Ories side that outpassioned us on the day.

All was not lost thankfully and we still had the second tier H.D Morgan trophy to play for. This bought a thrilling semi-final play-off with Tawa out at Lyndhurst. This game was a nail biter being played in very competitive fashion going down to the last play where OBU were down by 3 points and a scrum on halfway. From this scrum after what seemed like endless phases we made it inside Tawas 22m and the ball was tossed wide to a make shift loose forward by the number of Chris Whitley who crashed over in the corner to set up a exciting final with Poneke.

Finals day was played out at Petone and we were on the far side of the ground diagonally opposite the main ground. Never the less this didn’t deter us at all and after some stirring words by former all black Jason Eaton pre-match the troops were ready for battle. This was a typical to for tat affair which OBU known for their superior fitness, skill and nous rounded out a resounding victory and securing the H.D Morgan trophy. This was celebrated in epic style with the post-match noise being heard from the changing rooms right onto the main ground where the jubilee cup final was being played. A few spectators could be heard having a giggle upon listening in.

The bonds forged and connections deepened were a hallmark of this reserve team. Seeing this in action came about by a few social events that were kindly run by May Kyd and management. These socials were a great time had by all and allowed the team to let their hair down and enjoy each other’s company.

A big thanks to all the management and players for the contributions throughout the 2020 season. It absolutely made it the fantastic unforgettable season it was.

20. Under 21 Green

Winners Winners Winners Paris John E Kelly Letica Memorial Cup Cup Cup

If 2020 was a challenging year, then the achievements of this year’s Colts Green are even more remarkable.

After the dominating season of the 2019 Colts Green side there was some expectation that the 2020 side would be a year to rebuild given the turnover of players. As it turned out the 2020 season saw the team match the exploits of 2019 by winning the Letica, Paris and John E Kelly trophies and secure an unbeaten season.

The trials saw a good mix of first years and veterans highlight their skills with an internal trial followed by the Letica Cup games versus Wellington College 1st XV and 2nd XV seeing two good wins. With a squad finalised, the Hawkes Bay trip was expected to see the team refine its structure going into the championship rounds. That all changed with COVID 19 and the rest is history.

With the level of uncertainty over the resumption of the season it was with some relief that the revised season was launched in June. Round robin then semi and finals. However, the effect COVID 19 saw a number of teams unable to field a Colts side with traditional powerhouses MSP and Ories opting out. All in all, five clubs failed to field a Colts team.

The first game of the season was an indicator of who we would be playing in the final and the Norths Colts Blue side was physical and competitive and in the end the team was happy to come away with a 26-26 draw. The remaining games of the round saw the team rack up some big scores interspersed with some tougher games versus HOBM, OBU Black and Tawa and win the Paris Memorial Trophy. Tawa were especially tough in the last game of the round and into the semi-finals they were no different. It was pressure rugby and turning around with a 3-0 lead over Tawa into the wind, the team was told at halftime to amp up and that they did winning 18-10. Onto the final versus our old mates Norths and despite conceding two early tries the team were tactically better and pulled away with a comfortable win to retain the John E Kelly. It was not a vintage performance but the team did the job and a three peat was achieved.

A funny season but the team maintained good culture and showed plenty of guts in the last three games. The final represented the last games for a number of stalwarts of the team – Captain Tom Hoskin played his final and best game in the jersey and racked up over 50 games. Others Lawrence Lim, Dom Herlihy, Jo Sharland, Josh Godsiff, Will Carter, Mike Muir and Olly Paotonu were all great servants and were critical to the team’s achievements over the last three years. We have a good core of players to take up the leadership reins next year. That is the beauty of Colts Green that you will always have quality to fill the jersey.

This was my last year as Head Coach and I have been lucky enough to have Mark Brewis co- coach and Maree Chivers manage. Both were tremendous support and the success of this team is a credit to them. They have both stepped down and wish them well for their future endeavours. Also, thanks Tomasi Palu, Norm & Phoebe Fergusson, Trapper and the OBU Black team, all contributors to our success.

2020 has been a tough year and the achievements of the team has made it a bit brighter.

21. Under 21 Black

Colts Black for the first time in many years played in the WRFU top Colt’s division due to the disruption of Covid. It provided us with the opportunity to play against some of the strongest clubs in the Wellington Comp including Colt’s Green. The Green vs Black game was the most physical encounter of the year, which ended up being a close game showing the depth of young players within the club.

Our season concluded on finals day at Petone Rec where we lost a last-minute nail biter to Hutt Old Boys Marist. It was a pretty impressive feat considering we were down by 20 with 15 minutes left to play. Within those last minutes we were awarded three penalty tries from a dominant scrum only to lose in the final play.

It was a successful year for Colt’s Black considering the circumstances of 2020 and what a great way to end the season by winning the prestigious award OBU Club Team of the Year.

None of this could have been achieved with the support and guidance of our head coach, Norm and assistant coach Tomasi (team note: ‘and our manager Phoebe for keeping us in line’).

The culture that we have created within this team has been awesome and will live with you boys wherever your endeavors take you, it’s been a pleasure and a great season and one I’m all sure we will remember.

22. 85 kg Scallywags

Coming in to the second season on OBU Scallywag U85 footy, the team looked to improve on their 3 wins in the inaugural season and boy did they do just that. With a relatively new looking squad and the acquisition of some more coaching/management staff the Waggies hit the ground running with a hard-fought win against HOBM, just the start everyone was hoping for.

The boys then went on to have some good wins against MSP, Wellington Axemen and Wests. The Wests win was a highlight with a 70+ point score margin and locking up the Omar Cup once again. We finished third and met Eastbourne in the semi. It was a cracking, high point scoring affair and unfortunately the Scallywags just fell short, 46-43, in what would have been the first Grand Final appearance.

With a lot of the squad returning for 2021 we are hoping to build on a good season and go to the big dance to secure the silverware.

A special mention has to go to the coaching and management staff Jake Hird (Forwards Coach), Mitch Butler (Backs Coach) and Tani & Barns who helped out with management. MVP was big Blair (shko) Miller, Top Point Scorer was Nic Mannix for the consecutive year and Top Try Scorer was Mitch Butler for the consecutive year. If you’re reading this and keen to play or help out our Pirate Ship has doors wide open!

UP THE SCALLYWAGS!!

23. Sixty-Niners

2020 threw new challenges at us both on and off the field. While our on-field performance wasn't quite where we hoped it would be, the spirit of the 9er never died, and despite mounting injuries we still managed to turn out good numbers every week with some great young lads coming through.

Our off-field performance was strong as usual, starting with zoom catch ups earlier in the year, and plenty of court sessions and other get togethers through the back end of the year. This culminated with our annual tour, this year in our own back yard: Wellington.

Overall, with great recruitment and retention, and some solid social functions thrown in there, this most challenging of years was a good one for the 9ers.

Kia kaha.

Cheers

24. Pink Ginners AFASF

Holders Jackie Ruru Shield

A record of played 12, lost 10, won 2 does not do the 2020 Pink Ginners justice. With a mix of new blood and old faces it was a year of being oh so close. With a points differential of -75, and that includes our only thumping of the year to the Poneke by 40-odd, shows that we were in the fight for all but one of our games. We were lacking a knock-out blow. It truly was a case of a missed tackle here and a bombed try there from having a positive win/loss record.

With COVID disrupting everything in its path the rugby season was no different. The disrupted start saw the combining of grades in a round robin format. With a few losses to start the season, and no chance of sneaking into a semi spot due to mentioned new structure, the focus soon shifted from the lofty heights of winning the grade to the more manageable maintaining the Ruru.

The schedule saw us face the other three reserve grade OBU teams in the last four weeks of the season, so it had its own finals footy feeling. Our mentality being loss one and season over. First up, the Righteous (Brothers) Pack. Toughly fought but job done. Next up, the 69er’s. Again, toughly fought but job done. Last game of the season, and last challenge, against the Teddy’s.

There has been a recent trend which has us playing the Teddy’s in the last game of the season. There has also been a trend that the Ruru is on the line. And unfortunately (spoiler alert) for the Pink Ginners, the Teddy’s have made it a habit of beating us to keep the Ruru over summer. The game was the epitome of our season. Try for try until the Teddy’s scored the heart breaker with 10 to go which saw it being the final points of the game. 19-12 loss, another 7 point, or less loss. The year of being the nearly men.

25. Righteous Pack

The 2020 year started off with a lot of uncertainty given that the Covid-19 hit NZ forcing us all to go into lockdown. I myself assumed that a Rugby season would not go ahead as major sporting and general events were being cancelled. It made sense to keep the lads safe at bay. But it was confirmed that the season would go ahead. Immediately, it was a scramble for numbers as a lot of lads had opted not to play this season because of the uncertainty. It was also late in the signup stage to confirm a team.

Jason Gore from the Wolf Pack got in touch with me and mentioned that their numbers were low and that a potential merger for the year would be ideal. That prompted a renewed team for 2020 to be called the Righteous Pack. We both rallied the lads and formed the team.

Our season was a mixed bag of all sorts. In typical fashion, the season started off with an influx of players and then slowly dwindled down in numbers. We had 13 matches this season as the Reserve Grade comp had included all grades into one pool so the anticipation for some tough matches were forecasted. With Jason as our Captain, we kicked the season off with a Ruru match falling short to the Pink Ginners. The next match we managed to get a Win over MSP which gave us a good start to the season. But then player numbers became an issue. We wrapped up the season at 13th place. 3 Win's, 1 default, 8 losses. A number of games were cancelled due to a second locked down.

Our MVP for the year went to: Ed Griffiths (Major) - Our Rookie of the year: Dylan Boyce (Young Blood) Our defensive player of the year - Cameron Mitchell. In summary the year was a good year to get some footy in on the weekends. but it was a dog's breakfast of the year in general with COVID causing a lot of disruption and uncertainty

27. Under 12 Conrad Smiths

Strolling along the centre of a carless, sun-bathed Upland Rd with Level 4 lockdown in full squeeze, the prospect of any winter team sport, especially a contact one like rugby, seemed beyond unlikely. For the Old Boys University (OBU) Under 12 rugby team it was just one of a long line of challenges to overcome.

Even at the declaration of Level 2 in the middle of May, uncertainty reigned about if, how and when group contact sports like rugby might be able to happen. Within a few weeks overworked local rugby administrators released a protocol and playing schedule and by June the unexpected season had begun.

Based at Victoria University’s Boyd-Wilson Field, OBU has a particular emphasis on promoting rugby at the nearby Clifton Terrace, Te Aro, Kelburn and Thorndon primary schools. As a small junior club, OBU Kids has often had to find creative ways of fielding competitive teams. This is especially so once, from U12 up, 15 players aside are required.

With twelve players drawn from Kelburn Normal (3), Te Aro (2), Wellesley (2), Scots (3), Brooklyn (1) and Sacred Heart (1), the team lacked the numbers to compete in 15 aside. The solution for OBU’s U12 team was to form an alliance with the Johnsonville Junior Rugby Club.

A combined J’ville/OBU squad of 22 players took to the field as the Vikings, alternating their home ground between Kelburn and Johnsonville. Similarly, the team alternated playing jerseys between OBU’s green and white hoops and J’ville’s light and dark blue hoops.

A lack of preparation and familiarity hampered the team’s early performances in grading games. And with just one game affected by cancellation, a 5-win, 2-loss record in the regular season was really satisfying. Best of all though was being part of two club rugby communities that worked together to overcome parochial and geographic boundaries and help kids’ rugby flourish.

28. Under 9 Steinmetz

Due to the Covid-19 lock-down numbers for the U9 team were down from last year. A combination of U8, U9, and some U10 players were required to get a team together. Restrictions on the U10 players were imposed to ensure fair games could be carried out. The pre-season was short but think that suited most parents. Also, we had some first-time rugby/tackle players that took up the challenge.

The kids were amazing. All were committed to playing and having fun. We had three female players this season, which was great to see. The younger players were encouraged by the older players that took up the ball hard and seem to make all players work harder. Improvement during the season was vast in skill and confidence levels, with passing the ball in the tackle, forward driving, and more backline moves. Overall a really great season with the kids having fun, participating, and playing some good rugby.

36. OBU Virtual Clubrooms & SG Bremner’s 90th

During the covid-19 lockdown months, the OBU Virtual Clubrooms was set up to keep the social interaction with supporters active. The programme was based upon members joining a ‘Zoom’ session at 5pm on Saturdays with a key focal guest as a conduit towards lively, fun discussions and having a quiet tipple with clubmates. It was particularly pleasing to have so many club members from outside of Wellington getting a rare chance to participate directly in club activities

We were very fortunate with the range of guests who provided some unique insights into their lives and careers as well as some very interesting input into the ‘state of the game’ and where Rugby is heading.

The club extends it grateful thanks to the following who gave so generously of their free time, particularly in difficult & time constrained circumstances

Mick Bremner’s 90th Birthday Celebration L toR: Don Trow, John Walker, David Howman, Kerry McDonald, Brent Impey, Mark Robinson Peter Osborne, Mick Bremner, Barry Dineen, Roger Drummond

Selwyn George (“Mick”) Bremner

A great All Black, former University team coach, President of the VUWRFC, President of the Wellington Rugby Union and current President of Centurions Rugby Club celebrated his 90th birthday, 2 August 2020. Mick was an All Black in 1952, 1956 and 1960 when vice-captain for tour of South Africa. During his playing days, he was also selected for NZ Universities (1955- 57) and the provincial teams for Auckland (1952-53) Wellington (1954) Manawatu (1955) and Canterbury (1955-59). From 1963 to 1965 and 1971 and 1972, he was coach of the Victoria University of Wellington first fifteen, winning the Jubilee Cup in 1964. His illustrious playing career and tactical acumen was recognised with his election as President of VUWRFC from 1980 to 1982 and later as President of the Wellington Rugby Union. He is a Life Member of OBU & is proud to have an OBU Junior team named after him – the Under 8 Bremners.

Mick played mostly at second five eight, but also at first five. He is remembered as a fine sportsman, a most reliable five eight who played the game with enthusiasm, and who often featured as the key person for achieving a win for his team. There are three occasions in particular in the 1950s when Mick initiated play that brought an exhilarating result for his team. These three wins have been long remembered in the history of the game in New Zealand.

For Canterbury, against the British and Irish Lions team of 1959. This game has been described by the members of the Lions team as the toughest and roughest of their whole playing career. Near full time, the teams were tied and then a jinking run from Bremner to score a try and a historic win for Canterbury.

For New Zealand Universities against the Springboks, at Athletic Park in 1956, the Universities played spectacular rugby but didn't clinch the extraordinary win until Tanner ran the length of the field to score a try. But it was an intercept from Bremner earlier in the movement that allowed Tanner to break free.

For University against Petone at the end of the season in 1954. University was attempting to win its third Jubilee Cup in succession. At full time, the score was even and the game seemed at an end when Petone were awarded a defensive scrum. However, an unsung hero. Denis McHalick the University hooker won the tight head and the ball was passed to Bremner. Bremner reversed the play and kicked the ball back over the scrum into the hands of the flying Ron Jarden on the left wing, to score the winning try. This result brought huge excitement and celebration for the University team and their supporters. The decisive play from Bremner was talked about by the old timers for many, many years afterwards.

Thank you, Mick, from OBU, for all that you have done to contribute to the betterment and enjoyment of rugby at Victoria University and throughout New Zealand.

Robert Henry (Bob) Leggett 1940 - 2020

Bob Leggett was a stalwart member of the WCOB club in the 1970’s and 80’s. He served in many capacities, including being an ever-popular bar manager and active in team management duties. He is remembered fondly by those who knew him as ‘an outstanding club man’.

Bob passed away peacefully on 10 September 10, 2020 after a short illness at the Wellington Regional Hospital, surrounded by family, aged 80 years

Ian Grant Waddell 13 June 1958 – 24 January 2021

Ian Waddell suddenly passed away in January 2021. Ian attended Victoria University in the late 1970’s and early 1980's and subsequently joined the Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Club.

Ian played for the Senior First team as prop for a number of years. While Ian had ambitions of playing at higher levels, he unfortunately broke his shoulder in a club match against Western Suburbs. Ian was scrummaging against All Black prop Scott Crichton on the day, matching his ability with the best. Typical of Ian, he wasn't to be deterred and had a shoulder reconstruction and with a lot of gym work eventually turned out again for the club in future seasons.

After finishing his playing career, Ian, being a rugby fanatic, could often be found watching Victoria University and OBU from the side-lines, or watching Wellington Lions, the Hurricanes and All Blacks at Athletic Park or the Wellington Regional Stadium Ian remained a loyal and active OBU supporter, especially with his assistance to the club during the covid lockdown period. Ian was also an avid golfer, playing off a single digit handicap many times a week.

Ian was a highly respected & notable accountant and sharebroker in Wellington & in recent times had also been a guest lecturer at VUW Business courses.

Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Karyn and family.
