Another stellar rugby year has come and gone for OBU. When the breakthrough in 2015 of winning the Jubilee Cup for the first time happened, the challenge was always going to be keeping up the level of performance. This has been achieved admirably and not just by the players but all the coaching, managers & support from the club as a whole delivering

Hats off to Colts Green as well, back at the top of the heap & great season comeback by the Impalas, you know how to do it now! However, OBU is not simply just about trophies. Feedback I received during the season from the other teams playing was that they achieved the main goal which is enjoying their rugby.

It was pleasing to see the Juniors progress from strength to strength, interesting to note we are no longer ‘the babies’ as we numerically surpassed Newlands, who are now WRFU’s ‘smallest club. Alastair Forde, Trapper and the junior coaches are doing a wonderful job, make sure you support them and pass the word the OBU Juniors is the place to be on Saturday mornings.

There are still many challenges facing OBU, not the least in getting our strategies and priorities right and ensuring we remain fiscally sound. A lot of work is done by a lot of unpaid people to keep the club on track. Sometimes a difficult & tense task, I wish to thank all those who are involved with the administration of the club. Its what keeps the players on the paddock week in week out.

The pressures of raising the standards from the professional levels of the game impact deeply on all clubs, ours is no different. There has been a lot of discussion with WRFU about competition formats, what clubs are expected to deliver & how this can all be achieved within the very tight budgets all clubs have. OBU has been very well represented in these areas and you can be sure that our best interests are being looked after with Ian Cuff & Peter Scott leading the charge.

I have now had another year as President of this, the greatest of all Rugby Clubs. It’s a tremendous privilege to be in this position and I thank all of those who have helped me & all the players & supporters who make this club such a great one to belong to.

Here’s to a threepeat in 2019!

Andy

Andrew Braddock President

Note: The President wrote his report in November. Sadly, he passed away in December.

2018 was another successful year in Wellington College Old Boys and Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Incorporated’s ("OBU") history.

Our Premier Men's team retained the Jubilee Cup to go with recent wins in 2015, 2017, and 2018 which means they will be looking for a rare three peat in 2019, while the Under 21 Green team retained the John E Kelly Memorial Cup and the Premier Women won the Izzy Ford Trophy to become the Women's Division 2 Champions. The club also won the Dewar Shield for the most championship points.

OBU's on field performance continues to be very strong. This is down to old fashioned hard work, innovative thinking and learning from our past mistakes. Our ability to adapt and stay ahead of trends in the game on and off the field is pleasing to see.

We continue to have a strong, capable and committed coaching group who want to develop better players and better people, while the OBU Academy in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington ("VUW") will test many of our new players in 2019.

While many positives came out of our 2018 season, we also suffered a significant loss as a club with the passing of President Andy Braddock in December 2018. Andy was a club man through and through and was an exceptional listener and dispenser of advice when the situation required it. I was privileged to visit with Andy in his last days. Andy, in the knowledge his time was limited and with the Jubilee Cup well positioned in his room, commented that he could now pass on a happy man. Andy will be missed. Our condolences go out to Andy's family and friends.

Financially, OBU recorded a deficit of around $7,000.00. While this is concerning in terms of funding our operational requirements, we have endeavoured to minimise the losses. The cost of running a rugby club seems to remain slightly ahead of income. Unfortunately this is a common theme and it is a problem that is not unique to OBU and is echoed by most club officials I engage with each season. This is a concern to grass roots rugby in New Zealand and has prompted many rugby thinkers to suggest that rugby will soon become an elite game, with a big gap between High School rugby and the professional ranks; those falling in between falling away from the sport. I hope these views turn out to be incorrect, but it is something that OBU needs to keep an eye on in the coming years as we continue to promote the game of rugby for our players at all levels of the game, encouraging participation and enjoyment on and off the field.

To our sponsors and key stakeholders; thank you for your support. We are privileged to have some of the best sponsors and stakeholder relationships in club rugby. These include Tech Cafe, National Technology Experts, VUW, Wellington College, the Cambridge Hotel (the Trinity Group), The Lion Foundation, NZCT, Four Winds, Infinity Foundation, DB Breweries Limited, First Sovereign, Air Rescue, and Pelorus Trust.

On the committee front we have continued to extract many hours of work from those who put their hands up with little reward on offer apart from helping one of NZ's best rugby clubs. Our committee gets the job done. A few stalwarts have signalled their intention to stand down from our committee in 2019, including Ian Cuff, former Treasurer and WRFU delegate, and Richard Cromie, our Treasurer. These roles are demanding

Return to Contents Page 6

2018 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents and Ian and Richard have given many years to OBU. On behalf of the club I wish to thank them for their work and club support.

On that note it gives me great pleasure to officially welcome Mike Copland as the new OBU President. Mike is well known to all of us at OBU and has been one of our finest promoters and fans. Welcome aboard Mike and good luck in what i is an important role for the club.

With the above changes 2019 will be a year for the executive committee to refresh itself with some new faces who will bring new ideas and strengths to the table and will take the club on into 2020 and beyond. If you would like to contribute in this manner please let me or a fellow committee member know. We have an open door policy on the committee and it iis enjoyable We are keen to see the difference a new perspective brings.

On an operational front, some discussion has been undertaken around the timing of our AGM. For historic reasons our AGM is set down for February each year. Those reasons no longer apply. It seems sensible that the AGM is tied into the same calendar year as the playing season to enable committee positions to be resolved prior to the preseason commencing. I support this move and will be seeking the AG Ms support to move our AGM to November each year, commencing November 2019.

2019 promises to be another exciting season. At the time of writing our preseason is in full swing and our 2019 squads look to be on the right track towards giving their respective competitions a decent crack. You never know how the season will pan out. Across the grades there will be memorable wins and narrow losses accompanied by the OBU style of play which will make many games exciting and unpredictable.

As always, it has been a pleasure to serve as Chairman of the best rugby club in New Zealand. Finally, when you're out and about watching our teams in 2019 remember "forwards win games but the backs decide by how much".

Jaesen Sumner Chairman OBU

7. WRFU Delegate’s Report

The responsibilities of the position of WRFU Delegate is set out in the OBU Constitution as:

To liaise with other members of the Club to gauge feedback on relevant club issues. To offer support or help to other Club Committee members. To attend all WRFU Board meetings. If unable to do so, then give apology notice to WRFU Amateur Department and advise the Clubs alternate. To be the conduit between the Club and WRFU Board ensuring two-way communication occurs. Represent the Club at WRFU Board and WRFU Board at the Club, with representations always being balanced with the need to act in the best interests of rugby in Wellington. To act as a liaison officer/volunteer for WRFU events/Club rugby activities. To sit on sub-committees (including Disciplinary) within the WRFU Board to set and monitor rugby policy decisions.

NOTE: Attended all meetings (including WRB, CRSC (chair), Age Grade Review Board (chair), Golden Oldies Sub Committee (chair), Volunteer recognition and reward committee (chair), numerous club games and grade finals, WRFU Awards & AGM as well as 3 disciplinary hearings. Therefore all responsibilities (above) have been fulfilled in the 2018 OBU financial year and continue into early 2019.

2018 Summary:

The 2018 year was a year of ongoing discussion around the premier grade structure and the makeup of the 2019 competition. The WRFU embarked on another survey of players, clubs, referees, coaches, RDO’s, administrators, officials and fans in order to identify and establish a consensus around such issues as:

Representative player availability for Jubilee/ Hardham Cup semi-finals and finals Season commencement Season structure (full round robin) and therefore length Preference for mid-week night games or double headers Quality of grounds Kick off times

As chair of the CRSC I called a further meeting of all premier coaches to discuss their thoughts around the length of the season, the number of games being played and the level of injuries received due to the current programme. This was extended to Delegates and all who were interested and was unfortunately not attended by many Premier Coaches this year.

All this information has been gathered and the results have helped to shape the recently released 2019 season format which includes the 7/7 split for the second round

Return to Contents Page 19

2018 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents and a modified (reduced full round Robin) first round due to the RWC and other constraints on the 2019 club rugby window.

I completed the Wellington Age Grade Review and presented both its findings and recommendations to the Rugby Board. Many of the recommendations are being delivered by Wellington Rugby and a few are yet to be initiated and are in discussions with clubs.

The Golden Oldies sub-committee initiated discussions with the golden oldies board and have progressed WRFU funding for bibs, red/purple shorts and a contribution towards tournaments. On the back of this WRFU registrations rose from 25 to around 150 in 2018 and continue to grow.

Over 60 Volunteers (including our own club captain) received recognition and rewards for their continued service in 2018 under the volunteer recognition and reward scheme.

On the back of the 2017 Dame Margaret Bazley Report the WRFU Integrity Task Force chaired by Ted Thomas has ensured that the game in Wellington creates a positive culture that stands for inclusiveness and respect for all male and female participants.

Club Chairman’s meetings have continued to ensure that Chairman, WRB delegates and the WRFU are in regular communication and fully updated on current and relevant matters.

The 2018 season was a further move forward for the WRB delegates with increased communication, debate and an understanding of what is good for rugby in Wellington.

I received the Wellington Rugby Senior Volunteer of the Year Award for 2018

On a personal note it was a pleasure to represent OBURFC in what was another fine year on and off the field. I have enjoyed my tenure representing OBURFC but will not be standing for re-appointment at the AGM.

Regards

Ian Cuff WRFU Delegate

2018 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents 8. Junior Club Convenor’s Report

Our registrations increased from 58 players to 69 players in 2018, which meant we are no longer the smallest Junior Club in Wellington, quite a milestone!

This also resulted in us fielding six teams in the completions:

Un11 Williments Coached by Carl Grant, Troy Newton and Sam Johnstone Un 8 Bremners Coached by Aaron Tangaroa and Managed by Scott McKinnon Un7 Sadlers Coached by Simon Williamson and Mark Larsen Un7 Preston’s Coached by Anthony Taylor Un6 Rowats Coached by Luke Roper and Callum Edwards Un6 Wilsons Coached by Albie Rothman

It was encouraging to see us enter two tackle teams this year. Thanks to both sets of coaching staff for recruiting players to enable this to happen. For our club to grow we need to have teams in all grades. This is only achieved by building up our under six and under 7 base and parents being proactive in recruiting players. We had two teams in both of these grades in 2018 and need to continue to increase this area to ensure that when our players enter tackle we have sufficient players to assemble teams in these grades.

We were fortunate to get through the season with limited disruptions from the weather. Boyd- Wilson field is a great asset which allows us to play and train when other clubs have to cancel.

Our thanks to Hell Pizza for providing player of the day vouchers and pizzas on our club day. Karl Whelan and Victoria University for their assistance during the year and the Cambridge Hotel for providing at last minute the facilities for our prize giving.

Many thanks to all the coaches and parents who assisted over the season and in particular Dave Loveridge and Richard Boag who have given me great support for a number of years.

Alastair Forde OBU Junior Convenor

9. NZ Universities Delegate's Report

NZ Universities Rugby Council’s AGM was held in December 2018. The following are extracts from various reports on NZURC’s activities for 2018:

David Kirk continued in his role as Patron of NZURC and Roger Drummond as President.

There was a continuation of the sponsorship from ANZCO Japan for NZURC activities has entered into its 15th year. Without this funding much of NZURC’s activities, particularly the international tours would be severely hampered. This sponsorship has been contracte din until at least 2020.

NZU toured Japan & Singapore in April/May. They played Kyushu XV, Kansai Universities, Kanto Universities & a Singapore Selection. The team won each of these high-scoring matches. OBU’s representatives on the tour included Teariki Ben-Nicholas, Will Mangos & Mailie Koloto.

Head Coach Brendon Timmins and his coaching and management colleagues made 2018 their last year at the helm after four years. John Haggart and Dave Perrin have been appointed as Head Coach and Assistant Coach, respectively, for 2019 along with Peter Magson who has agreed to continue in his role as Manager.

Plans for 2019 include hosting Kansai University in Dunedin for two matches as part of Otago University’s 150th celebration. This will be followed later in 2019 with an NZU age group team invited to participate in the World Universities Rugby Invitation Tournament to be hosted by Waseda University in Tokyo prior to RWC 2019.

10. Club Captain’s Report

Thank you to all those that volunteered their time as managers, coaches, physios, video, executive, supporters, sponsors, partners and to all the players that help make this the best club in Wellington.

2018 was another successful year for the club from a club captain’s point of view. We had good representation across all grades and all teams conducted themselves well on and off the field. Was great to have 3 teams at finals week coming away with three championships in 2018.

The OBU/Victoria University Rugby Academy continue to bring benefits to the club by making better players and better people. The club also maintained a good relationship with the WRFU. It was good to see a number of players, coaches and managers reach representative teams through our successful club programme.

2018 was a busy year with a number of new initiatives - VUW Halls 10s Tournament for Zak Powers Memorial Trophy - Re-establishing a third U21 team – Colts White - Supporting VUW Inter Hall and Inter Faculty Rugby games 6 halls involved up from just 2 in 2017. - Establishment of General Manager Rugby Development. - Re-establishing the Social Committee

There are some issues that the club faced in 2018. The university holiday period continues to be a challenging time now also complicated by 3 weeks of Saturday exams for our students impacting all of our teams to varying degrees. During this holiday/exam period a lot of players were unavailable. The WRFU and other clubs are not particularly understanding of our predicament and this continues to leave us in a very difficult position in the second round. We mostly successfully managed players between teams. Even with taking this into account we still had to default some games for U85, Colts and Reserve Grade teams and for the third year withdrew a Colts team from the second round. This is an ongoing issue, I believe this process can be better managed in 2019 with support from WRFU, recruitment strategy and better management of players.

We were stretched for players in a number of our other teams - First Grade, U85 and Reserve Grade this year too so retention and recruitment are key targets for 2019 especially rebuilding the numbers in our Reserve Grade teams. The club has traditionally had a large number of teams in the Colts, Under 85kg and Reserve Grades and we look to re-establish this moving forward with a number of new initiatives including looking at the establishment of a VUW Halls 15s competition. Training facilities are good although cramped and we thank everyone for their understanding and patience as we try to provide training opportunities as requested and needed.

Home Ground for 2019 still remains an issue as a number of teams played home games in 2018 not in Wellington as well as teams around multiple “home” venues each week. Was good to see more games being played on Boyd Wilson and the plan for 2019 is to have any OBU vs OBU fixtures colts or Reserve Grade on Friday nights.

Sevens is a growing and successful part of the rugby year. Now an important part or our club programme for retention, recruitment, fitness and introduction to rugby and the club. With some players now becoming sevens specialists.

Support of “Club Rooms” at the Cambridge has seen a decline in the number of OBU players, supporter and management attending on game days.

Implementing learnings from the Respect and Responsibility review and establishing areas we as a club need to improve.

In order to continue to be a highly successful club I consider that these issues will need to be addressed in 2019.

Roger Moses

In April, the college bid a fond farewell to long serving Headmaster, Roger Moses. Roger has left a tremendous legacy of achievement for Wellington College in many different facets and it was with great pleasure that OBU elected him as a Life Member – effective from his last day of being Patron of OBU, a post which he admirably filled for the last two decades

Gregor Fountain, Headmaster Wellington College, OBU Patron With John E Kelly Cup & Jubilee Cup

Likewise, Wellington College welcomed Gregor Fountain as Roger’s replacement. Gregor also assumed Patronage of OBU and the club is looking forward a continuing long and prosperous partnership with him and the school.

Wellington College were once again gracious hosts (and victors!) in the annual Letica Cup matches. These are an important part of the OBU Colts season build up and an important traditional match for both the club and the school.

While the First XV didn’t have a stellar season, the links between OBU & the school remain strong, with the DHC scholarships and other initiatives ensuring Rugby at Wellington College continues to get plenty of support.

13. Capricorn Club Captain’s Report

2018 was a quiet year for the Capricorn Club. With Alasdair McBeth taking up the reigns of Chair of the OBU Foundation, it was deemed best for him to step down as Club Captain this year, many thanks Alasdair for helping to set the club up and for being its figurehead since the beginning.

The club introduced the name change to provide a better scope for planned membership increases and range of activities, however, it hasn’t yet reached financial goals that have been set to establish the club on a better fiscal footing, leading to eventual operational improvements and services to members.

The Prize Draws went smoothly & the weekly bar tab prize is still hotly contested amongst the Cambridge faithful! Our main expenditure outside of prize draws was to assist the club to meet its obligations under the DHC Scholarships with Wellington College. We see this as hugely important and fits well within the Capricorn Club’s goals, however, the Capricorn Club expects the future onus of this to be picked up by the club or the OBU Foundation, however, the Capricorn Club is ‘here to help’.

While Annual Reports are supposed to be strictly about the activities of the year being reported on, it needs to be said that one of the big ‘behind the scenes’ initiatives was to get planning underway for a significant fund raising dinner, aimed to get the Capricorn Club into a stable fiscal position and to provide a sense of ‘renewability’ for the proposed function to make it a highlight and ‘compulsory attendance’ for club members in future. The first one is to be held March 2019 and with the tremendous backing and support from our Patrons (Grant Guildford Victoria University of Wellington and Gregor Fountain, Wellington College) planning is well in hand and it is looking positive for a good result all round. The dinner will be introducing the ‘Players of the Decades’ concept, first one concentrating on the 1960’s and 70’s and the plan is to hold successive dinners to do the same for the 1980s and then into the combined clubs’ era of 90’s, 00’s and 10’s.

14. Women’s Rugby Development Report

It has been a pleasure to be involved with the club this year in the role of Women’s Rugby Development Officer. The role was established in late 2017 and is an exciting step for OBU looking to the both the future of rugby in New Zealand and the future of the club. The purpose of the role is to facilitate the growth of women’s rugby at OBU and to support player development and pathways to higher levels of rugby.

Being the first season in this role, my focus has been on building relationships and learning both about the rugby landscape and player experiences. The intention this year was to build a network and foundation of knowledge from which we can identify opportunities and initiatives to promote and grow women’s rugby at OBU in the years ahead.

This year I have undertaken a series of ‘focus groups’ discussing rugby experiences with a cross-section of our women’s team seeking to understand their path into rugby, what has helped or hindered them in continuing to play, and their views on club and team culture. This information is valuable both for design and planning for the 2019 but also for informing future initiatives to further grow this integral part of our club.

In sharing some perspectives from the women’s game with the wider club, my thanks go to Hiria McRae, Georgia Scott and Chloe Te Moananui for being willing guests in a women’s rugby panel at the 2018 Black Tie Dinner. These women shared their highlights from their playing careers and their motivations and goals in rugby. The panel conversation was well received by the audience that evening and certainly stimulated wider conversations.

Other key activities and highlights from around the club this year in the sphere of developing women’s rugby include:

- Providing St Mary’s College with access to training facilities to support their rugby programme; - Assisting Wellington Rugby Development Manager, Ebony Low, with a series of junior girls’ rugby skills evenings; - Presenting at the opening day of the OBU Academy for 2018; and - Tomasi Palu’s work with Queen Margaret College in establishing a sevens team and witnessing the potential in these young players and in this college relationship.

Building on the foundations established in 2018, the coming couple of years for the club should be exciting ones. Watch this space.

15. Premier

2018 was another big year for The OBU Premiers. It was an amazing achievement to win our second Jubilee Cup in a row.

Going into 2018, we lost 17 players that had played for the team last season, but this provided opportunities for a number of new players. 17 players made their debut for the Premiers, including 12 players who were new to OBU.

The first round was challenging, and it was disappointing not to retain the Swindale Shield. Norths were a good quality team and worthy recipients of the shield. We were able to win all our first-round trophies apart from the Ken Douglas Trophy (Norths) and Peter Dunford Cup (Wainuiomata). It was great to have all the other trophies back at The Cambridge for the summer.

Return to Contents Page 32

2018 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents We played some great rugby in the second round, although Norths were victorious over us again and they deservingly finished top of the table. We were able to get revenge over Norths in the final – winning a gripping encounter 37-31. It was a tense game, but the celebrations were very special.

Congratulations to Finnbarr Kerr-Newell who played his 100th game for Premiers, it was a special achievement for a Goat legend both on and off the field. Also, a special mention for Teariki Ben Nicholas and Ezekiel Sopoaga, who brought up their 50th games for the team.

A big thank you to the players that are moving on after this season. Special mention to centurions Tomasi Palu and Joe Hill who finished playing this season. They have both given so much to the club and have been a big part in our success in recent years. We look forward to seeing Tomasi’s grow as a coach, it’s hard to think of a better coaching team in Wellington to learn his trade.

It was a pleasure working with the coaching team of Jamie Williams, Michael Barnes, Rua Tipoki and Greg Halford. They did a great job and the players really enjoyed working with them. Thank you to the rest of the team’s management team: Pati Gagau, Olivia Nimmo, Richie MacDonald and Stephen Isaac all played a big part in the team’s success.

We’d like to thank all the wives & partners who support not only their partner throughout the long season, but the club, you are a special part of our team. A big thank you also to the sponsors of the club and the Club Executive for all their support throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing what 2019 brings for The Goats

2018 brought with it silverware for the Impalas as they took out the women’s division two final winning the Izzy Ford trophy. Gary Hilsdon and Tara Horsnell coached the team this season, with Janelle Schreiber in support as team manager. The Impalas were led by Emma Hopoi (Captain) and Montana Heslop (Vice-Captain).

The first round was again a difficult one for the Impalas as they took time to gel as a team. Winning just two from eight matches with one draw, the team were in the second division in the second round competing for the Izzy Ford Trophy. The second round was a home and away structure, with the Impalas competing against Poneke, Hutt Old Boys Marist and Avalon. Rather than drop their heads, the team set their eyes on that trophy and dropped only one game in the second round.

The Impalas qualified for finals finishing the second round at the top of the table. Their opponent in the final was Hutt Old Boys Marist – the only team to have defeated the OBU women in the second round. Both teams were certainly in the hunt come finals day. The Impalas were focused and came out firing. Up 34-12 at half time, the Impalas ran away with the game in the second half to convincingly defeat HOBM 71-24. The team ran in 13 tries with 3 conversions in the final with an impressive three tries to Montana Heslop and four tries to Te Aniwa Hurihanganui.

2018 brought a number of achievements and milestones. On Queen’s Birthday weekend Gina Williamson played her 100th premier match for OBU, becoming the third women’s player to achieve this milestone at the club. In celebrating this achievement, OBU presented its first women’s blazers, recognising both Gina and Hiria McRae (who played her 100th match in 2016). Later in the season, Georgia Scott played her 50th premier match.

This year four of the Impalas were selected in the Wellington Pride squad for the Farah Palmer Cup: Courtney Clarke, Montana Heslop, Gina Williamson and Ruth McElroy. Three more Impalas were named in the wider Pride training squad earlier in the season (Jess Offen, Emma Hopoi, Tawny Burgess). The Pride had a successful season winning the Farah Palmer Cup Championship and being promoted back to the Premiership for 2019. This year also saw the WRFU present caps to current and past players. Included in those receiving caps were OBU’s Erin Rush, Claire Rowat and Gina Williamson.

There was also strong representation from the Impalas in the 2018 Ta’ahine Tonga (Wellington Tongan Women’s) team. The team included: Emma Hopoi, Losaline Hopoi, Abigail Weir, Sherri Burgess, Tawny Burgess, and Jasmine Leota. Hiria McRae was the team’s forwards coach again in 2018.

In addition to representing Wellington in 15s, Montana Heslop also played for Wellington in 7s, and was invited to participate in the RedBull Ignite 7s programme (scouting talent for New Zealand 7s development programmes). Monty was also named New Zealand Insitute of Sport’s Sportswoman of the Year for 2018 – congratulations Monty.

Well what a year from the young goats.

Competition for the top colts’ team at OBU was strong again this year. 2018 saw the young goats use 52 players through the 2018 season with 30 or those scoring points. Colts Green only lost 2 games all season one each round. Saved their best game until last with a comprehensive 55-0 win to regain the championship for 2018.

Competition was tight for most tries and points with Ty Poe (15) beating out Shamus Langton (14) with their overall points only beaten by Malo Tevita-Manuao boot with 36 conversions and 2 tries despite using 6 other kickers.

Player perspective:

Coming from a senior player who has been with the side for 2 years and has gone through the highs and lows of those past two seasons, I can say that again there was no shortage of challenges and triumphs experienced within this campaign. The road was difficult with a new crop of talent joining the team, helping expand the whole Colts grade to three competitive teams. This pushed us senior members to fight for our positions which only added to the depth and quality we had throughout the season. Victories were hard fought and rivalries most notably with Northern United, MSP and Hutt Old Boys, were formed. Each had their own strengths and although some difficulties did occur we all moved on and can say have improved from the experiences. Our title run was most notable for us as it is where I personally saw the team finally reach the potential we all knew we had. Starting essentially at a quarter final against Petone, a run of 40+ points scored for us and 20 against us within 3 games confirmed the potential we knew we could access. Outside of rugby the boys throughout the colts teams socialised well and enjoyed the company of each other inside and outside of the rugby environment.

Congrats to players who have taken this season as a launching pad onto further rep honours. Most notably Shamus, Tane and Taine with their Under 20 achievements.

2018 was an excellent season for Colts Black. We managed to make the semi - finals and narrowly went down to a very strong Poneke side in that game.

We had an excellent pool of very talented players and they responded well to the pressures of playing against a number of much bigger teams. Our talented and pacey back line lead by Jasper Edgar and coached by Seminar Manu was a threat to all teams in the grade and they showed just how potent they were in many games, especially those played on turf or dry grounds.

Dallas Pouatunu took over the reins as head coach mid - season and his contribution was invaluable. Working with both Dallas and Seminar was for me the highlight of a fantastic season for the boys. Both of these men were a fantastic asset to the team and I take my hat off to the time, effort and care that they put into coaching and moulding a very talented group of players. Making the semi- final was for me the highlight.

All of the Colts Black boys were an absolute pleasure to manage. They did OBU proud with the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field.

Here’s hoping 2019 will at the very least equal if not better than 2018

As is tradition, 2018 promised to be a big year for the Pink Ginners, who were probably tipped by many to be the overwhelming favourites coming into the season. An exciting year was ahead, as the mighty Reserve Grade 2 traditionally features stunning ball skills, quality pitches, and top-notch referees who really know the rule book back to front.

The season got off to its usual excellent start, with the team strategically sandbagging against the Upper Hutt Pirates. Brilliantly losing 5-46 and lulling the rest of the division into a false sense of security, the tactic would pay dividends across the rest of the season. The solitary try on the Ginners side being scored by Jeremy Seal, who like a hungry seagull couldn't resist the meat pie.

What followed from then on was a string of famous victories. Shotgun wins against the Upper Hutt J8s both home and away (33-22 and 46-15). A last gasp victory against a very strong Marist St Pats team 26-24, with the moustachioed Marco chipping the ball over the opposition fullback and dotting down in the corner with the last play of the game (although MSP would beat us 38- 39 in an almost identical fashion later in the season). A blinding 65-26 win against the Mixed Veggies in which Missen (also known as Mr OBU 2017) scored a hat-trick, winning not only the game but the admiration of his peers (the Mixed Veggies would also get their revenge later in the season when we learned we could not run around their big boys when we were knee deep

Return to Contents Page 46

2018 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents in mud (or whatever the surface at Ian Galloway is). The only team which consistently gave the Ginners trouble in 2018 was Paremata Plimmerton, beating us both home and away 17-21 and 17-24 respectively - their hospitality only matched by their humbleness in victory.

Most importantly, the Ginners enjoyed four victories against the OBU's three other mighty reserve grade teams, netting two wins against the Righteous Brothers (47-24 and 46-24), one Against the Teddys (25-0) and one against the 69ers (36-15). The latter game was for the Ruru Shield, and with the victory came one of the highlights for the season.

A cracking season was not without its cost, as a string of injuries tested the depth that had been so carefully built up over the years by the Ginner's brains trust and superb talent scouts. A season ending concussion to our talsmanic captain Ralphy half-way through the competition was a heavy blow, John Boy suffering his traditional annual rib/ankle injury, Snakey essentially amputating his finger, and Harrision splitting his face open on a team-mate are a few that spring to mind.

As the end of the season approached, and with only two games left to go (against the Teddys and 69ers), the Ruru Shield was as good as ours for the summer and well-earned back pats were had all round. However, realisation sunk in that looking after the Ruru over the summer was actually too much of a responsibility for us, so we hatched a brilliant plan to lose the penultimate game for the year against the Teddys. Although beforehand we had strategically agreed to score no tries, Rhino in a moment of excitement forgot and dotted down almost ruining our plan. Thankfully we still managed to lose 5-7, tricking the Teddys into the thankless task of looking after the Ruru for the summer.

Mission accomplished, the next week saw a cracking game against the 69ers, the score of which is unimportant but needless to say rugby was the winner on the day.

The final icing on the cake was our head coach and all-round top bloke Bob receiving the OBU volunteer of the year award and in my honest opinion I think he was robbed that he did not also get nominated for New Zealander of the year. Big thanks also to Frankie and to Norm for their tireless commitment.

2018 saw 17 games played, with 10 won. 81 tries, 492 points scored and only 354 conceded. Marco defended his title as the Ginners' most deadly try scorer with 14, while the Fraser's golden boot slotted 21 conversions (with 5 tries for himself) - both tied for top point scorer for the season with 70. For his efforts, Fraser also netted the most player of the day points.

28. Under 8 Bremners

It was another fun filled year for the 15 children who made up the 2018 OBU U8 Bremners. This was always going to be a challenging year for both the children and their parents, as they left rippa rugby behind, for the big world of tackle and scrums / lineouts. It took a few games, but by the midway point of the season they had all grasped enough of the basics to continually be competitive in their division, winning a number of games along the way.

In terms of development, the most pleasing aspect was seeing them start to understand the importance of team work – always a challenge in the stop / start of rippa – and the value of passing the ball to someone with space to move.

The team was lucky to be coached by ex-OBU player Aaron Tangaroa, who very kindly gave up his Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings to look after them. This was even more impressive given that midway through the season Aaron and his partner became parents for the first time!

Andrew John Braddock: 1947-2018

Born in Wellington in July of 1947, Andrew was the eldest son of John and Ella Braddock. He was raised in the Wellington suburbs of Hataitai, Miramar and Northland and attended Scott’s College, Northland Primary School and Wellington College.

After leaving College Andy attended the Wellington Polytechnic Design School for 4 years studying Industrial Design and on completion of the course commenced his career within the sign and display industry.

Andrew became a member of the Wellington College Old Boys Rugby Club in 1965 & within two years of joining he was on the management committee and for the next 50 years served in a number of jobs. He played hooker in the Premier, Senior 2nd and Senior 3rd team before embarking on his OE to London in 1970 where he also played for London Scottish Club. He was deemed good enough to be in a trial for Scotland B. Unfortunately, a knee injury landed him in hospital for a month and required a year of rehabilitation before he returned to NZ in 1971. After his OE, Andrew re-joined the Wellington College Old Boys Club upon his return and continued to play for many more seasons in the Social and Presidents Grades until the early 1990’s. He became assistant Club Captain in 1977 and then held the position of Club Captain from 1980 to 1985 and continued on for a number of years being a co-Club Captain when the WCOB club amalgamated in 1992.

He was elected President of Old Boys University Rugby Club in 2016 and during his reign as President the club has won the Jubilee Cup twice and the Swindale Shield once, along with a number of other grade championship victories he found most satisfying, including Colts and the Women’s team.

Other achievements include being appointed a Life Member in 1990, being a member of the WCOB Centenary committee and a Trustee for the Al Keown Memorial Trust. Andrew was also a member of the Centurions Rugby Club.

Outside of the rugby club Andrew spent most of his working life living in the Wellington suburb of Karori, travelled extensively and enjoyed wining and dining at many of New Zealand’s restaurants and food festivals. He held management positions in a number of Wellington based sign and display businesses, including Coronet Displays, Signmaster Studios, Frampton Signs, Signwise and Martin Signs. Andrew is the past Chairman of the Wellington Sign and Display Association. During his involvement with the association, advances were made in the area of training and apprenticeships being introduced to the benefit of the industry.

Andrew has been a mentor to nephew John Braddock (Canada) and his partner Barbara’s son, Jay Williams (Abu Dhabi) and in the last years of his life at Wellington’s Village at the Park (previously Athletic Park). He enjoyed being involved in his grandson Zane’s upbringing whilst the family lived in Wellington. He was also member of a local pub quiz team regularly competing around Wellington and was on the residents committee at the Village at the Park from the time he moved there in 2012 and not surprisingly, was actively involved in organising the Friday evening social activities.

Andrew was an outstanding club man and his passing will be of great sorrow to all those who knew him, but his significant contribution & decades of service to the club will not be forgotten.

Prepared by Mike Johnson
