WHO TELLS YOUR STORY?: INTERSECTIONS OF POWER, DOMESTICITY, AND SEXUALITY RELATING TO RAP AND SONG IN THE MUSICAL HAMILTON By Tia Marie Harvey A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Musicology—Master of Arts 2019 ABSTRACT WHO TELLS YOUR STORY?: INTERSECTIONS OF POWER, DOMESTICITY, AND SEXUALITY RELATING TO RAP AND SONG IN THE MUSICAL HAMILTON By Tia Marie Harvey In January 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical premiered at The Public Theater in New York City. Later that year it moved to Broadway with an engagement at the Richard Rodgers Theater, followed by productions in Chicago and London. Commercially successful and critically acclaimed, Hamilton continues to hold significant cultural relevance in 2019. As a result of this musical’s cultural significance, it has the ability to communicate positive, but also limiting, aspects of our society. In this thesis, I examine the concept of rap as a musical language of power. To do this, I assert that characters in Hamilton who have power, and particularly when expressing that power, do so through rap. In contrast, when characters don’t have power, or are entering realms of the powerless (i.e. spaces gendered female), they do so through lyrical song. In chapter 1, I set up the divide between rap and song as it primarily translates among male characters and class. Chapter 2 is focused on the domestic sphere, and in chapter 3 I discuss sexuality. In the conclusion of this thesis, I revisit the character of Eliza and explore the perceived power of her role as storyteller and the way in which the themes I discuss illuminate many missed opportunities to present an interpretation of America’s founding that is truly revolutionary. -

Everyday Life in a Dutch Colony An Educational Resource from the New York State Archives Compelling Question: How do people succeed in a new place or environment? Courtesy: Len Tantillo Bakers in the Colony Objective: Describe the purpose of bakers in the colony and explain how bakers contributed to daily life in the colony. Essential Question: How did bakers contribute to the growth and success of the colony? Historical Background: Bread was the main staple of the Dutch diet both in the Netherlands and in the colony of New Netherland. Residents of the colony ate at least three times a day and bread was a key part of every meal. Bread in New Netherland was made mostly from wheat which could be grown in abundance in this part of the world. Bakers baked both rye and wheat bread. White bread was the most desirable bread and therefore was consumed mainly by the wealthier residents of the colony. Baking was a labor-intensive process that required significant amounts of time. The ovens were built with large bricks designed to stay hot for long periods of time. First, the baker would heat the oven with wood and clean out the residue when the oven was hot enough. Then the oven would be wiped clean with a wet cloth attached to the end of a stick. The baker had to knead the dough by hand or foot. Rye bread had to bake for 12 hours, while wheat bread had to rise twice and bake for an hour. The baker would blow his horn when the bread was ready so that his customers would know they could now purchase the bread and other baked goods. -

SPOONER. the early Dutch colonial families the Van OF Rensselaers were the first to acquire a great landed estate in America under the "patroon" system; they were among the first, after the English conquest of New Netherland, to have their possessions erected into a "manor," antedating the Livingstons and Van Cortlandts in this particular; and they were the last to relinquish their ancient prescriptive rights and to part with their hereditary demesnes under the altered social and political conditions of modem times. So far as an aristocracy, in the strict understanding of the term, may be said to have existed under American institu- tions—and it is an undoubted historical fact that a quite formal aristocratic society obtained throughout the colonial period and for some time subsequently, especially in New York, — the Van Rensselaers represented alike its highest attained privileges, its most elevated organization, and its most dignified expression. They were, in the first place, nobles in the old country, which cannot be said of any of the other manorial families of New York, although several of these claimed gentle descent. -

VAN LAER Archivist, Archives and History Division ALBANY THE UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK I 935 PREFACE In the preface to the Correspondence of Jeremias van Rens selaer, which was piiblished in 1932, attention was called to the fact that after the death of Jeremias van Rensselaer his widow carried on a regular correspondence with her husband's youngest brother, Richard van Rensselaer, in regard to the administration of the colony of Rensselaerswyck, and the plan was announced to publish this correspondence in another volume. This plan has been carried into effect in the present volume, which contains translations of all that has been preserved of the correspondence of Maria van Rensselaer, including besides the correspondence with her brother-in-law many letters which passed between her and her brother Stephanus van Cortlandt and other members of the Van Cortlandt family. Maria van Rensselaer was born at New York on July 20, 1645, and was the third child of Oloff Stevensen van Cortlandt and his wife Anna Loockermans. She married on July 12, 1662, when not quite 17 years of age, Jeremias van Rensselaer, who in 1658 had succeeded his brother Jan Baptist van Rensse laer as director of the colony of Rensselaerswyck. By him she had four sons and two daughters, her youngest son, Jeremias, being born shortly after her husband's death, which occurred on October 12, 1674. As at the time there was no one available who could succeed Jeremias van Rensselaer as director of the colony, the burden of its administration fell temporarily upon his widow, who in this emergency sought the advice of her brother Stephanus van Cortlandt. -

Among these have been Claude G. ~ unsell, "The Lansing Family", Jonathan Pearson, '"Geneal ogies of the First Settlers of Albany" (New York) and, S. V. Talcott, "New York and New England Families". In the New York r.enealogical and Biographical RECORD . Vol. 65 (1934), pages 56-58~ and Vol. 72 (1941) pages 26~28(a), contributions by William J. Hoffman, M.E., cites convincinP: research to the effect that the name of the progenitor was r.errit Gerritse (or Gerritze) Lansing and that he died in The Netherlands, probably in 16~3, and that his wife Elizabeth Hendrickse and her six children came to Ameri~a with her 2nd husband, Wouter Albertse (van den Uythoff) in the fall of 1655. This and other documents relatizu.r to this family are attached as background information. I am taking the position that (1) Gerrit Gerritse Lansing, a baker, was the father of the six children who came to America with their mother in 1655, (2) that Gerrit Gerritse Lansing died in The Netherlands and never came to America and \3) that Wouter Albertse van den Uythoff \baker), the 2nd husband, came with (or shortly before) the mother and six children (3 boys and 3 girls ) to America. Munsell states: "The Lansing family comprise one of America's oldest and most distinguished families. The family is closely associated with the found ing of the first European settlements in the valley of the Upper Hudson, a.t what is now Albany. -

“Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story?”: Founders Chic and Narrative A areness in Lin!"anuel "iranda#s Hamilton Emma Charlotte Weiher Philipps University of Marburg, Germany Abstract: With its recent addition to the streaming service Disney+, Lin- Manuel Miranda’s 2015 Broadway production Hamilton: An American Musical has once again entered cultural discourse. While lauded for its appraisal of Alexander Hamilton’s life as an immigrant’s story and as a revisualization and presumed reclamation of America’s past through the lens of an almost exclusively nonwhite cast and group of creators, the musical has also been subject to criticism. Early critics aptly categorized it as another component of Founders Chic and questioned its presumed progressive stance on history-writing in the face of its veneration of the Founding Fathers. The following paper aims to discern the musical’s awareness of its position within history through the analysis of relevant lyrics and rhetorical devices. Hamilton is thus presented as a piece of history-writing aware of the process of historical reenvisioning, carefully and individually established through its respective generational, political, and sociological ideals and identity. ainstream media consumption has recently been enriched by a renewed interest in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway production Hamilton: An American Musical after its distribution on digital Mstreaming services. Clare Chandler Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical (Hamilton) (2015) has tapped into the current cultural moment, lauded as the ‘saviour of Broadway’.1 The show’s unique tour de force is the use of hip-hop to convey the story, reigniting the genre and attracting a new musical theatre audience. This musical idiom combined with Hamilton’s colour conscious casting has allowed Miranda to create ‘the story of America then told by America now’2 exposing to critical view the whitewashing of history and the more questionable legacies of the Founding Fathers of America. The show is inescapable, dominating social media through its innovative #Ham4Ham and #Hamildrop initiatives.3 Television shows are even cashing in on Hamilton’s cultural currency with references to the show appearing in Brooklyn Nine Nine, Grey’s Anatomy, and Gilmore Girls (amongst others) as well as talk shows such as e Late Show. With so much exposure it is hard not to get swept up in the hype surrounding the musical. Hamilton is closely associated with happier political times in America. Lin Manuel Miranda premiered an early draft of the opening number at the White House in 2009 and the Obamas were keen supporters of the show, even going so far as to introduce Hamilton’s 2016 Tony Awards performance. -

Newton Philo Hamilton With the opening of the Hamilton musical on Broadway in New York City in 2015, interest in the life of Alexander Hamilton has soared. Since its debut, millions have seen the show at the theater and on television. Not only has Hamilton’s popularity grown, but his wife Eliza and two of her sisters, Angelica and Peggy, collectively known as the “Schuyler Sisters,” have also gar- nered abundant attention. This attention has not been entirely positive. One recent complaint against Hamilton, both the man and the musical, is that he was not an abolitionist, as asserted by a number of biographers and perpetuated by the musical. Indeed, Hamilton never claimed to be an abolitionist and that term was rarely used in the eighteenth century. One critic of Hamilton on the topic of slavery has been the Schuyler Mansion in Albany, New York. The Schuyler Mansion has for the last hundred years served as a public gathering place to present the home, family, and patriotic record of Philip Schuyler, Alexander Hamilton’s father-in-law. The musical tripled attendance at their location, and yet they recently published a negatively biased and error-filled essay about Alexander Hamil- ton and slavery. -
