  • More Is More Brochure Cropped
forEword What is the difference between a graphic designer and a “fine artist,” between he who gives highway signs their typeface and she whose canvasses and sculptures live in museums where admission must be paid? In terms of talent, possibly none. The difference is one of intimacy. We gaze up at our favorite paintings, gingerly circumnavigate the greatest sculptures—we literally put them on pedestals. But we hug our favorite books and records, and kiss their covers, and a particular typeface will forever conjure the road-sign at the turnoff to the summer lodge, that last turn that led to nirvana, the last week of August, the summer after tenth grade. I don’t want to meet the artist (the painter, the sculptor, the violin prodigy, the rock star), for if I did, she’d probably disappoint, and if she didn’t, I’d be tongue-tied. But the graphic designer? I want to clasp him to me, and ask how he did it, and say Thank you. No need to invite George Corsillo into your living room and offer him a nip or a puff—he’s been there all along. He’s been in your album crate since the early 1980s, showcasing John and Olivia at their Grease-iest, Luther Vandross at his sultriest, Benatar, Mellencamp, Yoko. In his toolbox, George always brings his analog chops, learned with the legendary book-jacket designer Paul Bacon; nobody has that facility with typeface or silkscreening who grew up only on computers. He brings, too, a party- down fierceness, a willingness to get his hands dirty (on the Grease jacket, those are George’s teeth marks on the pencil), a scavenger’s resourcefulness (the legs on the Tilt cover? his wife, Susan’s), and a tactful deference to the artist, masking, as needed, Vandross’s girth or Benatar’s pregnancy.

  • There Are Few Artists Capable of Appealing to Music Fans of All Stripes, and Alan Doyle Is One of Them
There are few artists capable of appealing to music fans of all stripes, and Alan Doyle is one of them. From the moment he burst onto the scene in the early 1990s with his band Great Big Sea, Canadians fell in love with the pride of Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, whose boundless charisma and sense of humour was eclipsed only by his magnetic stage presence. His influence is now being heard in a new generation of artists as his solo work continues to endear him to roots music fans everywhere. That’s clearly evident on Alan’s new EP Rough Side Out, which finds him collaborating with Canadian country music superstars Dean Brody and Jess Moskaluke, while at the same time offering his own distinctive interpretation of contemporary country. The seeds for Rough Side Out were planted in 2012 when Brody asked Great Big Sea to record the song “It’s Friday” with him for the Platinum-selling album Dirt. For Alan, that was the moment he realized the door to the country music world was open for he and other east coast Celtic-leaning artists, and since then he’s warmly embraced building closer ties. “My personal journey with the whole thing has been very organic,” Alan says. “When my parents weren’t listening to traditional folk music, they were listening to country music on the radio. So, when I began creating my own musical identity, I was inspired by artists who were able to blend those two worlds.” The same could be said of the songwriting and production team on Rough Side Out, which includes Alan’s frequent collaborators Donovan Woods and Todd Clark.

  • Jon Astley When I Was Asked to Remaster the Who Catalogue, I Couldn’T find Any Tommy Masters at All in the MCA (Universal) Vaults
Resolution 3.2 March 04 3/3/04 9:09 PM Page 44 craft ‘What do you think?’ We said it sounded fantastic so he mixed the whole of the album, I put it on a DVD-A here, we sent it to the label and some other people, got some input, then started all over again! It was getting feedback about placement — was he being too extreme, putting guitars in the back speakers — that sort of thing. Elliot brought the Neal Young 5.1 with him to demonstrate. Pete was encouraged, we said: ‘There are no rules, do what you think sounds good.’ When he first put the 8-track 1-inch up, Pete couldn’t believe how great the bass and drums sounded compared to the result on the LP, so initially he set it out to be a sort of tribute to Keith and John because the playing is just so great. The Who were so late in delivering the original Tommy that Kit Lambert was left in the studio to finish mixing it while they went on the road. It’s Kit’s mix on the vinyl LP, and it was Kit’s mix that Andy Macpherson and I emulated when we remixed it in stereo in 1995 — the reason we did that was because no one could find the masters. This must be the moment for you to reveal to Resolution readers the truth behind the long run- ning rumours of missing Tommy master tapes! Jon Astley When I was asked to remaster the Who catalogue, I couldn’t find any Tommy masters at all in the MCA (Universal) vaults.
