CASTING BEGINS ON TE REO MAORI LANGUAGE VERSION OF WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS’ MOANA Writer Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) and Moana Actress Rachel House (“Gramma Tala”) Made the Announcement on behalf of the Matewa Media Trust, in Collaboration with The Walt Disney Studios Actors Rachel House (“Gramma Tala”), Temuera Morrison (“Chief Tui”), Jemaine Clement (“Tamatoa”) and Oscar Kightley (“Fisherman”) will Reprise their Roles BURBANK, Calif., June 8, 2017 – Casting has begun on the Te Reo Maori language version of Walt Disney Animations Studios Academy Award®-nominated animated feature Moana. The Maori language version is being created by Taika Waititi’s Matewa Media Trust, in collaboration with The Walt Disney Studios. A Casting announcement was posted by Rachel House and Taika Waititi today on www.adrenalingroup.com/ casting. The recording process will take place over the next few months with actors Rachel House (“Gramma Tala”), Temuera Morrison (“Chief Tui”), Jemaine Clement (“Tamatoa”) and Oscar Kightley (“Fisherman”) reprising their roles. Rob Ruha, multi- award-winning composer and solo artist, has joined the team as both Musical Director and as an integral part of the translation/adaptation team. Release details are to be announced, with the goal to have the film shared both in festivals and on DVD for educational purposes in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and beyond. "It's been a big dream of mine to see mainstream movies translated into te reo Maori,” says Waititi. “For indigenous audiences to hear films in their own language is a huge deal, helping to normalize the native voice and give a sense of identification. -

In Canada last year I attenDeD imagineNATIVE Toronto. I was fascinateD how the native peoples of Toronto have a cultural presence in a vast metropolis that is the film festival capital of the worlD. However, in such a crowDeD meDia market, a “Native Voice” is just one fractal among many in a vast manDala of multiculturalism anD urban tribalism. -

These screenings will also feature food, special guests, fun activities and a few 20th anniversary surprises. Betsy Wallace, CFO and Managing Director of Sundance Institute, said, “Enjoying these great films with friends, neighbors and colleagues, surrounded by Utah’s natural beauty, is a highlight of our year-round programming -- and, now that we’re in our 20th year, it’s safe to say it’s a local tradition as well. We are proud to call Utah our home and the Institute’s summer series is one way we try to give back to the local communities” The series kicks off July 5 at Salt Lake City’s Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre with a screening of Napoleon Dynamite. This Sundance Film Festival-discovered cult comedy classic will be accompanied by themed activities for the whole family, such as a Napoleon-inspired dance competition and a costume show. Other highlights of the series include a special screening of the classic Sundance Institute namesake Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Robert Redford, preceded by a free concert and to which all audience members are encouraged to wear their best Western garb. -

Maori scholar Deborah Walker-Morrison argues that the film adaption is successful for its portrayal of"Miiori ways of being [and] universal themes" (Walker-Morrison 33). However, Maori scholar Christ Prentice in her article, Abstract "Riding the Whale! Postcolonialism and Globalization in The Whole Rider:· argues that universality can undermine the indigenous identity of a culture if used too liberally in Disney's Polynesian Moono neatly follows Disney's archetypical and Universalist "self-dis- film. Specifically. Prentice critiques the film's overrelionce on the "story's appeal to 'uni- covery'' plot structure. Such an act might be seen as an example of colonial cultural versal' values" (Prentice 258). Such reliance is, according to Prentice, at the expense appropriation by westernizing an indigenous story. -

4 Living JUNE 16, 2013 COVER STORY A tourist in Tuhoe heartland Liz Light visits Ruatahuna, deep in Te Urewera National Park, the setting for the latest New Zealand film, White Lies. Oputao Marae is in heartland Tuhoe country. ichardWhite’s alarm clock is set for 6.30am and every morning he wakes to the deep, sweet Rtones of Louis Armstrong, “I think to myself, what a wonderful world.” Ruatahuna, a village that straggles along a valley in a big bubble of Maori land in the middle of Te Urewera National Park, is Richard’s wonderful world. Green farmland is surrounded by steep mountains clothed in dark, primeval rainforest. The forest seems to be quietly creeping down, reclaiming land that once belonged to it, making a mockery of man’s futile attempts to farm and nudging the cattle and horses further down the valley. The Whakatane River that carved this valley is young and sprightly, dancing around rocks and sometimes slowing down in pools where trout swim. This is heartland Tuhoe territory and the 260 people who live in Ruatahuna speak Maori, their first language. It’s also the location of the latest New Zealand movie, White Lies, and one of few such places that welcomes and hosts tourists wishing to experience a unique landscape and lifestyle. The valley has 10 hapu and each has its own marae. Oputao Marae belongs to the extended White family and has done for hundreds of years. Richard and Meriann, and their youngest son Paraki, live here but over Christmas the whanau — uncles, aunts, brothers, cousins, and lots of children — return from all over New Zealand, and some from Australia. -
