African expats laud Cultural Diversity Festival

FRICAN expatriates have praised the Cultural Diversity Festival, a series of cultural performances by Atroupes from different countries organised by Katara. Africans felt in- cluded because besides hosting troupes from other continents, performances by African troupes too were staged. So far, groups from Kenya (Nairobi National Dance Ensemble) and Burkina Faso (Burkinabe Djakali Kone Musical Group) have been showcased. Jonathan, a Ghanaian expatriate, praised the idea saying that it was a good way of uniting various expatriate commu- nities living in Qatar. “I appreciate how Katara has been showcasing different cul- tural troupes. NEWS Philippines’ Duterte vows IN BRIEF China says Taiwan fraud suspects hangings in war on crime deported from Malaysia ‘confess’ TAIPEI A GROUP of Taiwanese fraud suspects deported from Malaysia to China have confessed and will be tried on the mainland, according to Chinese authorities, despite an angry ‘Security forces would be given ‘shoot-to-kill’ orders and that citizens would learn to fear the law’ Taipei demanding they face justice at home. The expulsion of the 32 suspects from Malaysia in April came after another group of Taiwanese fraud suspects were sent to China from Kenya, a move described by Taiwan as “abduction”. The depor- tations are seen by observers as a means of exerting pressure on self-ruling Taiwan’s new president Tsai Ing-wen, who takes office on Friday and has a far more sceptical approach to rela- tions with Beijing than her China-friendly predecessor did. Ex-cop charged in grisly Thai killing linked to mass grave

BANGKOK A FORMER policeman in Thailand has been charged with murdering a woman whose fate led to the discovery of a suspected mass grave, police said on Monday. Reports about a large burial site in the northeast, where criminal gangs may have dumped bodies for years, have swirled in the local media in recent weeks. The investigation began when the daughter of a woman who was strangled in June 2014 took reporters to a remote jungle area where her mother’s burned corpse was first discovered. She said she wanted to highlight what she described as a lack of police interest in investigating the killing. At a press conference in the northeastern city of Khon Kaen, officers Monday announced two people including a former policeman had been charged with the June 2014 murder. (AFP)

15 students killed in Indonesia landslide; more deaths feared

SIBOLANGIT FIFTEEN students holidaying at a popular tourist spot in western Indonesia have been killed in a landslide, an official said Monday, with fears the death toll could rise. Heavy rain and flash flooding triggered a major landslide Sunday at a famous “two-coloured” waterfall at Sibolangit in the north of Sumatra island, said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Searchers had so far unearthed 15 bodies, Sutopo said late Monday. Two others, presumed dead, were still being recovered, while four remained missing. “It is be- lieved those victims were also buried in the landslide,” Sutopo said in a statement. Fifty-seven others had been found alive with just one injured, he added. About 300 people joined in the Philippine president-elect Rodrigo Duterte gestures as he speaks during a press conference after almost a week of isolation since claiming victory in the presidential election in search, including students and volunteers. More and more corporations are starting to change behaviour towards protection and preservation of animals What is Brexit?

BESIDES the never-ending violence in Syria and the heartbreaking refugee crisis, there are two other news sto- ries we watch and read every day on TV and in newspapers, respectively – the good and bad Donald Trump and the controversial issue about the ‘In-Out referendum of Britain on its EU membership, or popularly known as ‘Brexit’ (merging the words Britain and exit).
