EXECUTIVE SUMMARY At every meeting, the Board receives a list of recent notable distinctions and recognitions that have been received by UBC faculty members -- for their teaching, scholarly accomplishments and community service -- ranging from very prestigious national and international awards to significant internal awards at UBC. In addition, the Board receives profiles of three of these award winners. List of Notable Distinctions: *Research *Teaching *Service Template revised: April 30, 2020 Sabina Magliocco Professor, Anthropology Department Faculty of Arts Distinguished Teaching Award UBC Anthropology Student Association Dr. Sabina Magliocco was raised in Italy and the United States. She received a BA (Anthropology) from Brown University in 1980 and a Ph.D. (Folklore) from Indiana University–Bloomington in 1988. She came to UBC in 2017 after 20 years in the Department of Anthropology at California State University – Northridge where she served two terms as department chair. Prior to this, she had taught at the University of California at Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. A recipient of Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright and Hewlett fellowships, and an honorary Fellow of the American Folklore Society, Prof. Magliocco has published on religion, folklore, foodways, festival and witchcraft in Europe and the United States, and is a leading authority on the modern Pagan movement. Her current research is on nature and animals in the spiritual imagination. She has appeared as an occasional guest on a number of popular television series about modern legends and beliefs. Prof. Magliocco has been awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Anthropology Student Association in recognition of her dedication to her students’ journeys, and inspiring her students in transformative lectures. She acts as an intellectual partner and she balances both supporting and challenging her students. 1 Teaching awards Dominique Weis Professor, Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty of Science 2020 Mentorship Medal Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences Dr. Dominique Weis has been a full Professor at UBC since 2003. She is a Canada Research Chair Tier 1 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She is also Director of the Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research at UBC, a world-class analytical facility. She attained her Master and PhD degrees in Environmental Sciences and Geochemistry from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. Prof. Weis has been awarded the Mentorship Medal from CFES in recognition of her passion for helping students to achieve their potential and her transformative vision for enriching student training. Throughout her career, she has kept an exceptional track record of mentoring over 60 students and many more early career researchers. Prof. Weis is an esteemed leader in the innovative use of trace elements and isotope geochemistry, and is widely respected “for the elegance, precision and impact of her geochemical studies of the Earth from large igneous provinces to the environment” (AGU Fellow 2010 citation). Her previous awards and recognitions include the Faculty of Science Award for Research, the Geochemical Society Fellowship, and the André Dumont Career Award. She has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and serves on a number of boards and leadership committees, including for the American Geophysical Union where she is the Volcanology, Geochemistry, Petrology President-elect, as well as policy committees for regulators and legislators. 2 Service awards Peter Zandstra Professor Biomedical Engineering/Michael Smith Laboratories Faculty of Applied Science Fellow, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) Congratulations to Professor Peter Zandstra who has been elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Election represents one of the highest honours for members of the Canadian health sciences community. Professor Zandstra is internationally recognized for his distinguished contributions to the field of biomedical engineering and is advancing our fundamental understanding of how stem cells develop into mature blood cells. Using this knowledge to design and implement new technologies that enable stem cell-based therapies for diseases such as leukemia, Dr. Zandstra is driving the development and clinical testing of these new therapies with Canadian biotechnology companies. A leader in cell and gene therapy manufacturing, Dr. Zandstra is catalyzing the growth of biomedical engineering research and education, across Canada and around the world. Dr. Zandstra is the founding director of the School of Biomedical Engineering and the director of Michael Smith Labs. Prior to joining UBC in 2017, he was a professor and Canada Research Chair in Stem Cell Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. Dr. Zandstra is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has received numerous high profile awards including an E.W.R Steacie Memorial Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. 3 Research Awards Notable Distinctions of UBC Faculty and Librarians Meeting of the UBC Board of Governors Research December 2020 BoG Date Faculty - Department Name Award/Distinction DEC 2020 APPLIED SCIENCE - Howard, Fuchsia - Assistant Recipient of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health School of Nursing Professor Research Scholar Award. The MSFHR Scholar Program supports early-career health researchers who make significant contributions to their field. DEC 2020 APPLIED SCIENCE - Wong, Sabrina - Professor Elected Fellow of The American Academy of Nursing, in School of Nursing recognition of her significant contributions to health and health care. DEC 2020 APPLIED SCIENCE - Zandstra, Peter - Professor Elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health School of Biomedical Sciences. CAHS Fellows, who serve as unpaid volunteers, Engineering are nominated by their institutions and peers and selected in a competitive process based on their internationally recognized leadership, academic performance, scientific creativity and willingness to serve. DEC 2020 APPLIED SCIENCE - Harten, Julia - Assistant Professor Recipient of the Karen R. Polenske Award for Outstanding School of Community Student Paper on a China-Related Topic by the Association and Regional Planning of Collegiate Schools of Planning. The ACSP is a consortium of more than 100 university departments and programs offering planning degrees as well as programs that offer degrees affiliated with planning. DEC 2020 APPLIED SCIENCE - Sandercock, Leonie - Professor Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. The School of Community fellowship of the RSC comprises over 2000 Canadian and Regional Planning scholars, artists, and scientists, peer-elected as the best in their field. DEC 2020 ARTS - Creative Writing Leavitt, Sarah - Lecturer Winner of speculative fiction award from Alberta Book Program Publishing Awards. This much-anticipated event draws industry, government and media attention to the world- class excellence of Alberta’s publishing industry.
