Exchanges through RCI® expand vacation variety

From snow-capped ski lodges and peaceful country retreats and to sun-splashed beach resorts and high-energy high rises, Disney Vacation Club® Members are discovering that there’s more to their neighborhood than castles and coasters. (Not that we aren’t fans of castles and coasters. We are.) RCI® exchanges joined the World Passport Collection in 2009, and since then, Disney Vacation Club has facilitated more than 11,000 transactions, sending Members packing to places where people don’t wear mouse ears, eat turkey legs or encourage you to move to the end of your row to make room for others. (Again, not that we don’t love those places. We do.) Disney Files Magazine reached out to RCI to find out which destinations have proven most popular in the Member community. And, just because we’re annoying (we mean thorough), we present that list along with our theories as to why Members are so fond of these places. Here it goes…

Mexican beaches: Clearly, places like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas have given Members opportunities to show off the cliff-diving skills they learned watching in the Gran Fiesta Tour starring The Three Caballeros in the Mexico pavilion at ®.

New England ski slopes: With RCI resorts located near ski areas of Maine and New Hampshire, Members in the Northeastern U.S. have convenient places to do their best Lindsey Vonn. Or Shaun White. Or any other Olympic Champion whose name we can drop while of course taking the time to clarify that these famous athletes don’t endorse our product. (At ease, lawyers.)

Caribbean shores: Pristine beaches? Check. Crystal-blue waters? Check. Hot sun? Also check. But the real reason Members love the Carribean? We’re going with “a misguided belief that Captain Jack Sparrow was unfairly represented on film as a player and is actually the monogamous type simply looking for the right girl; preferably one possessing the ability to travel the world with a simple call to Member Services.” Obviously.

Hawaiian hotspots: While Member anticipation builds toward the planned fall 2011 opening of the first phase of Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i, Members whose Hawaiian dreams just can’t wait are taking advantage of the many RCI options on these breathtaking islands. (Plus, as reported on page 4, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film is scheduled to begin shooting in Hawai‘i this summer. So bonus for the aforementioned Sparrow stalkers.)

New York City high rises: Either Members are comforted by the Broadway presence of such familiar faces as Mary Poppins and Simba, or they want to see if the Empire State Building really spears a giant hot dog, as it did in a Member Getaways image in our summer 2009 magazine. “The whole dynamics of family travel are changing,” said RCI® Director of Business Development Octavia Rushin. “People are no longer tied to the seven-day vacation, so they’re thinking differently about vacations and what Good to Know vacations can do. Maybe there are places they’ve seen on from your friends at Member Services television or in the movies, and the shorter vacations help families sample a wider variety of destinations.” Addressing that changing dynamic are a range of nightly What happens when you call Member Services to RCI exchange options, as well as a group of Signature book a Member Getaways trip: First, Member Services SelectionsTM, a collection of resorts chosen for their luxurious checks availability for the requested destination. Steps: 1. In a 2-quart saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. 2. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes. Remove the saucepan and set aside. You just created a roux! (So talented.) 3. In a 4-5-quart Dutch oven, heat the oil over medium heat until hot but not smoking. 4. Add the onion and celery, and cook while stirring for about 5 minutes or until the onion is softened. 5. Stir in the clam broth, potatoes, chopped clams with their liquid, thyme, basil, salt, pepper and hot sauce. 6. Bring to simmer over medium heat, typically 5 minutes, until the potatoes are cooked through. 7. Add Half & Half and increase heat to medium-high until the soup comes to a low boil. 8. Add the roux slowly, whisking constantly, until well blended. 9. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 10. Serve and enjoy. (To really dine like a New Englander, do so while complaining about how the Yankees are ruining baseball.)

Festival celebrates a new generation of stars

DISNEYLAND® PARIS: For every Annette, there’s a Britney. For every Mickey, a Remy. And for every Cinderella, a Tiana. With every new generation of Disney fans comes a new generation of Disney characters, and is putting those fresh faces in the spotlight (well, not Britney) as part of the “Disney New Generation Festival.” The yearlong spectacle, which kicked off this spring, includes new shows, contemporary characters and an entirely new “playland” of attractions. Disney Files Magazine dusted off its proverbial passport to get the lowdown from our friends in France. (Note our use of the word “proverbial.” We didn’t actually go to France to write this story. Again with the budget constraints.)

Princess Tiana joins Disney’s Once Upon a Dream Parade: The popular Disneyland Park processional has welcomed Princess Tiana from Walt Disney Pictures’ The Princess and the Frog, bringing a bit of the French Quarter to her French fans.

Remy joins Disney’s Stars ‘n’ Cars: Remy drives fans wild as his all-new Ratatouille Roadster joins this madcap motorcade through Walt Disney Studios® Park.

Disney All Stars Express: Fans looking for a more personal interaction with Remy get their wish when the respectable rat rolls through Disneyland Park on the Disney All Stars Express. teammates Buzz and Woody are among the other newcomers to this interactive meet-and-greet character cavalcade.

Disney showtime spectacular: The Central Plaza Stage at Disneyland Park’s welcomes an all-new A-list of guest stars for a singing, dancing, show- stopping production under the direction of maestro Mickey.

Monsters, Inc. Scream Academy: While generally discouraged in public places, screaming is welcome at Disneyland Park. The stars of Disney•’s Monsters, Inc. are on hand to “shriek and greet” Guests as they look to break the decibel meter.

Toy Story Playland: Beginning this summer, Guests will shrink to the size of toys and venture into Andy’s backyard to explore an over-sized world of larger-than-life rides in this new land inspired by Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story films. Located in , Toy Story Playland will be home to three playful attractions. Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop will challenge Guests to hold on tight as they join Andy’s troops for a high-flying, simulated parachute adventure. At the Slinky Dog Zig Zag Spin, family pups of all sizes will join Slinky® Dog in a rollicking spin to catch his own tail in what Walt Disney Imagineers have dubbed a “zigzag-a-coaster.” The most trilling new ride is RC Racer, where Andy’s speediest toy car will get families’ adrenaline pumping on a half-pipe coaster that Walt Disney Imagineers promise is a “real gas.” (Nice work, Imagineers.)

Fueled by that success, Imagineers are pushing the envelope further by developing characters that won’t need such assistance. Simply knowing that all good things must come to an end is one thing. Having them actually end is quite another. That’s the traumatic reality Buzz, Woody and the gang face as Andy prepares to leave for college. Will the toys be kicked to the curb? Forgotten forever? Auctioned on eBay®? Have no fear. Turns out that Andy plans to safely store the toys and enjoy them one day with his own children. Phew. Disaster averted. Roll credits. Seeing little cinematic potential in such smooth sailing, filmmakers throw audiences a comedic curveball, landing the toy box in the wrong pile and errantly donating Andy’s plastic pals to a local daycare center. But maybe it’s a happy accident. Maybe the constant waves of new kids will be just what the toys need to secure a lifetime of love and affection, free from the risk of being left behind by an aging owner. Then again, maybe not. Maybe the untamed tots will be a nightmare. Maybe their sticky little fingers and reckless play habits are the recipe for disaster. Maybe the whole “no toy gets left behind” thing will prove difficult in the pandemonium of this crazed new world. Will the gang stay together? Escape in one piece? Reunite with Andy? Prompt the Disney Files staff to pose one more rhetorical question in this story? The answers (to all but the last of these questions) come on June 18, when Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3 opens in U.S. theaters in standard, Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D formats. The highly anticipated threequel (is that really a word?) unites director Lee Unkrich (, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo) with producer Darla K. The original voice cast from the first two Toy Story films returns for the third, including John Ratzenberger (voice of Hamm), who is the only actor to voice a character in all 11 Disney•Pixar films. Also returning is Oscar®-winning songwriter and composer Randy Newman (Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc.), who brings new music to the production. From left, Peter Schneider, Roy E. Disney While expanding the cast to include a Ken doll voiced by Michael Keaton grabbed early and Jeffrey Katzenberg headlines, recent buzz has surrounded newcomer Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear (pictured above), a jumbo, extra-soft teddy bear that smells like strawberries. With a smile that promises to light up a child’s face and a belly just asking to be hugged, Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear is sure to become a bedtime necessity. Plus, filmmakers tell us he’s stain-resistant.

Did you know? Toy Story 2 was the first film ever to be entirely created, mastered and exhibited digitally. The film also holds the distinction of being the first animated sequel to gross more than its original at the box office.

Disneylanders remember when it all began

As the Disneyland® Resort celebrates its 55th anniversary, I begin this edition of “Vault Disney” with a little Disneyland trivia question: “How many Cast Members worked at Disneyland Park when it opened on July 17, 1955?” The answer is…none. Not a single Cast Member in the Park. Did I mention it was a trick question? You see, the term “Cast Member” wasn’t part of the Disney vernacular in 1955. The first employees to staff Walt Disney’s groundbreaking Park were known simply as Disneyland Hosts and Hostesses on opening day, gaining the nickname “Disneylanders” in a 1957 handbook. The term “Cast Member” didn’t come into vogue until 1976. Even the nametags so closely associated with Disney Parks Cast Members didn’t exist when the flagship Park first opened its gates. Instead, Hosts and Hostesses wore number badges, with numbers selected based on seniority. Walt’s badge, as you might imagine, was No. 1. In 1970, those opening-year Disneylanders became part of the newly formed Club 55. The last Club 55 member working at the Park was Bob Penfield, who retired in August 1997 and received the high honor of having his name emblazoned on a Main Street, U.S.A.® window. I’ve always been fascinated by the memories of Club 55 members, and I’m pleased to share some of them with you here as we celebrate 55 years of Disneyland magic.

Rima Bruce: “I was typing memos and menus, and trying not to mix up the two. The phone never stopped ringing. The railroad tracks went right by the office window and as the train passed by, it would blow its whistle with a tremendous noise... scared the wits out of me. On opening day, bedlam! Nobody knew their way around the Park... took an hour to get from Personnel to my job.

Dave Bartchard: “When I started to work here (during Park construction), Main Street was nothing but two-by-fours, stakes and chalk marks. I was hired to drive a truck hauling paint all over the place, but I also hauled Walt Disney everywhere. Walt was there every day. I was on the job 24 hours a day for the last two months before opening. I slept a little in the truck and only went home on Sunday. Opening day was my day off, and I guess that I must have slept all day.”

Hank Dains: “I remember the first day we had paying Guests in the Park and Walt was over at the Fire Station looking out the window. And I heard him say, ‘Guests. I love you’... and threw them a great big kiss!”

Jim Harman: “The Moon Ride was quite a mess! You would push the button and nothing would run... or it would run backwards or upside down! At that time in , the sound speakers were hidden in false rocks and the gophers would fill the speakers in with earth. I remember how, during the course of that first season, the ants would eat the real fur off of the mechanical birds and animals.”

Earl Wuestneck: “What do I remember? People...people...people! We would open the gates for 20 minutes and then close for 20 minutes. Celebrities everywhere.” show on the road.’ You have to keep throwing it in; you can’t Homer Holland: “I was loading jungle boats. There sit back and let it ride. That’s been our policy all our lives. were no microphones on the boats then and you shouted We’re not out to make a fast dollar with gimmicks. We’re yourself hoarse with a megaphone. Walt wanted things interested in doing things that are fun... in bringing pleasure perfect. He had an open mind and asked advice of the and especially laughter to people. I ran the sprinklers and I repaired them and, of course, I was the one that had to put them in. One day, before opening, I spent 16 hours on the island...they had forgotten all about me!”

Marion Schawacha: “Hectic! Painters still painting. Carpenters still sawing. The waiting lines were all mixed up and criss-crossing each other. The line from would end up at the Space Bar (quick service food location) and vice versa. All you could see in was PEOPLE!”

Chuck Boyajian: “Before Opening Day, I was working nights and I never believed that we’d get open. But come July 17, we opened with a bang. We had open trash cans then, and we had trouble getting the trash removed. It piled up in a gigantic heap behind City Hall...trash was overflowing everywhere.”

Clearly, I can’t end this column with a tale of over- Joyce Belanger: “I can still see Walt strolling through flowing trash. Those chaotic days of the Park’s infancy paved the Park. He didn’t talk down to the children ... He’d the way for better days. It was then that the Happiest Place pose for pictures and always had time for them. And on Earth was born. they loved him. He had a very child-like quality “To keep an operation like Disneyland going, you have about him and never seemed to tire of the Park.” to pour it in there,” Walt told reporters on the occasion of the Park’s 10th anniversary. “It’s what I call ‘keeping the

Jack Lindquist: “I brought my 4-year-old son along to go on all the fabulous rides, but it was so crowded Earl Anderson: “On opening day, I got a call that the that the only thing we could get on was the Canal gate had fallen off the Mule Pack Ride, and that I was boats. I put my son on a boat and waited there for to go and fix it. I had not the slightest idea where the him to come back. I waited and waited….and Mule Pack Ride was.” (Walt Disney is pictured here on WAITED! Produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the science-fiction short film follows Captain EO and his crew of space creatures on a mission to rescue a colorless planet from the forces of darkness through the gift of music, dance and light. The film’s popularity in the U.S. expanded its presence to other Disney Parks around the world, debuting in Tokyo in 1987 and Paris in 1992. Now, more than a decade after the film wrapped its initial run, Captain EO has returned to Disneyland Park in California, where acoustic theater enhancements and the original 70mm print of the film have combined to present the spectacle like never before.
