SANTO TORRE IN 1967 HAD GONE TO MILAN TO STUDY KARATE UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF RENOWNED JAPANESE MASTER HIROSHI SHIRAI, THE MASTER WHO BROUGHT FAME TO THE OLD ITALIAN KARATE, SANTO TORRE HAS ALSO STUDIED KARATE WITH OTHER FAMOUS MASTERS SUCH AS NAKAIAMA, KEINOSUKE ENOEDA MASATOSHI, TAIJI KASE, KATSUMIRO, TSUIAMA, ETC. NAGAMINE SHOGI. SANTO TORRE IN 1977 RETURNED BACK TO HIS HOMELAND, SICILY, WHERE CATANIA TOGETHER WITH HIS WIFE ELEONORA FOUNDED THE FIRST ASSOCIATION OF THE CENTRO STUDI C.S.K.S. KARATE SHOTOKAN KARATE, THEN HE WAS FORCED TO TEACH "KARATE DO" AND AS A RESULT HE HAD TO ABANDON THE COMPETITION, CONTINUING ALSO TO TRAVEL FROM CATANIA TO MILAN, WHERE HIS TEACHER LIVES; IN ORDER TO FURTHER REFINE HIS "KARATE DO" AND STAY ABREAST , AS WELL AS PARTICIPATE IN SOME INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT .     Influenta exercitata de Yoshitaka Funakoshi asupra Karate-Do Yoshitaka Funakoshi a sosit la Tokyo la putin limp dupa tatai sau. Tatsuo Yamada, unul dintre primii elevi ai lui Gighin Funakoshi, l-a ajutat sa-si gaseasca un serviciu de tîmplar, iar dupa un timp a devenit tehnician specializat în raze X la Universitatea Imperiala din Tokyo si la Ministerul Educatiei. Yoshitaka a început sa practice Karate din copilarie si atît tatal cît si fratele sau mai mare, Giei, au simtit ca el era copilul cel mai capabil sa continue traditia. Yoshitaka Funakoshi avea aproape treizeci de ani cînd a început sa predea Shotokan Karate. Desi era robust, totusi nu era foarte sanatos. Cu mai multi ani înainte, cînd avea doar sapte ani, medicii îl examinasera. Doctorul pusese diagnosticul de tuberculoza si spusese ca Yoshitaka nu va trai nici pîna la 20 de ani. Acest gînd râmînea ascuns în mintea sa si dadea antrenamentului sau de Karate o intensitate neobisnuita; stia ca fiecare antrenament putea fi ultimul. într-un interviu cu „Budo Magazine Europe", Sensei Taiji Kase a facut un portret interesant lui Yoshitaka Funakoshi, asa cum era în 1944: „Avea 38 de ani pe atunci si era în plina forma fizica desi, grav bolnav, ajungea sa se opreasca la mijlocul amtrenamentului, mergea într-un colt al Dojo-ului si suferea în tacere. Apoi revenea, îsi cerea scuze si se antrena din nou, mai dur. Cum ia vîrsta de sapte ani i se spusese ca are putine sanse de a se vindeca de boala de care suferea si ca nu va trece de vîrsta de 20 de ani, de a-ceea decisese sa se consacre aspectului spiritual al karate-ului antrenîndu-se fara limite..

    Instructor Profiles SENSEI BAKKIES LAUBSCHER – IOGKF SOUTH AFRICA CHIEF INSTRUCTOR IOGKF – 8th Dan SHORT BACKGROUND He was born on 30 November 1948 in Bethlehem in the Free State, but has been living in the wine lands of the Cape, Stellenbosch, for the past 50 years. After High School, he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education as well as a Higher Teachers Diploma. He spent six years as a schoolteacher before joining the South African National Defence Force as a Sport and Physical Training officer, where he was applied as head of the Defence Force Sports Club Western Cape Command with rank Lieutenant colonel. As a Senior Staff Officer, he was trained in management skills and was exposed to various levels of corporate management and decision-making. He is currently retired from the military and spends most of his time teaching Goju Ryu karate. KARATE BACKGROUND He started karate as a boy in 1964, in the Kyokushinkai style. Technical input at the time was just about non – existent and received mostly from Japanese sailors rounding Cape Town port. (An interesting point to note was that An’Ichi Miyagi Sensei, whilst working on Japanese fishing boats in his youth, taught karate in Cape Town in the 1950’s when his boat was docked in Cape Town). In1965, his teacher changed to JKA (Shotokan), in which he was graded to Senior Sho dan at the age of 16 by the well-known JKA icons, Senseis Taiji Kase and Hiroshi Shirai. The latter stayed in Cape Town for almost six months, during which time Sensei Bakkies trained with him at least four times weekly, shuttling between Stellenbosch and Cape Town by various means, such as hitch hiking, goods train jumping, etc.

    Beckie Challans Life of a Karate Master – Keinosuke Enoeda Sensei Born on July 4th, 1935, in Kyushu, South Japan, Keinosuke Enoeda was widely known as ‘Tora’ – or, the Tiger. He proved to be very skilled, and the art came naturally to him, allowing him to achieve the grade of Nidan at the age of just sixteen, laying the foundations for his future life in the martial art world. Not long after achieving this grade, however, Enoeda Sensei found himself at a Karate demonstration, held at Takushoku University, and showcasing two of the main instructors of that group – Senseis Okazaki and Irea. He found himself to be inspired by what he saw that day, and upon enrolling on a degree in Economics, he joined the group, and began to train in Shotokan Karate. After just 2 years of tuition from instructors such as Okazaki and Irea, and even Sensei Gichin Funakoshi himself, Enoeda was awarded with his Shodan, the first of the eight dan grades he would achieve over his lifetime. A further 2 years saw him take on the role of Captain for the competition team associated with the university, which allowed him to enter a large number of competitions for the university, in particular within the kumite division of the JKA All-Japan Championships.

    The Lion ! The official magazine of the Chiltern Karate Association December 2019 Takuya Taniyama 1965 - present Foreword…. Osu! Welcome to the December 2019 edition of The Lion! The front-page features another of giants of Shotokan karate – Takuya Taniyama Sensei. Born in 1965, he was a student of Takushoku university. At the age of 25 yrs old he graduated from the JKA Instructors course and became a full-time Honbu dojo instructor. A kumite specialist, he won the all Japan Karate Championships for kata in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2001 and then decided to concentrate on kata. And then something extraordinary happened…. Taniyama entered the kumite competition of the 50th JKA championships, and at the relatively (in elite competition terms) of 42 years old….he won! Members of the CKA were fortunate to train with Taniyama Sensei in Tokyo in 2018, at the Takushoku University. My heartfelt thanks to you all for the support you have shown myself & the CKA during 2019. Without the commitment of you, the students, the CKA could not continue to thrive & flourish. 2020 looks set to be a bumper year for the CKA, with many guest instructors in the pipeline, access to external competitions and, of course, the annual BBQ!     SHOTOKAN RELATERTE VIKTIGE DATOER 1372- Det tidligste tidspunktet for nedtegnelser av kampkunst på Okinawa. 1390 tallet- 36 kinesiske familier med yrke som båtbyggere ankom Okinawa og introduserte Kinesisk kampkunst. 1429- Kong Sho Hashi (1372-1439) samler Okinawa til ett rike og forbyr krigerklassen å bære våpen. Ca 1500- Kong Sho Hashi konfiskerer alle våpen på Okinawa 1609- samuraier fra Satsuma klanen iverksetter en 40 dager lang kampanje mot Okinawa og iverksatte igjen forbud mot alle våpen. De nedla Kongens sverdsmie i Shuri og tok den ploitiske kontrollen på Øygruppen. Dette skjøt fart i kampkunstens utvikling. 1735- Sakugawa fra Akata som studerte Kinesisk boksing returnerte til Okinawa for å undervise. 1785- Shiodaira fra Shuri nedtegner et referat fra en oppvisning som skal ha funnet sted med den kinesiske militærattacheen Kushanku. Det finnes nedtegnelser som tyder på at Kushanku ikke er en person men en referanse til en militær grad. 1809- Sokon Matsumura blir født i Shuri. Kilder varierer veldig fra 1798 og oppover, men vestlige historikere regner denne datoen som mest korrekt av kildene. 1816- 19. oktober. Kaptein Basil Hall på HMS Lyra beskriver i boken sin ”Account of a voyage of discovery to the west coast of Cora and the great Looo-Choo island” en Shizoku som viste en uventet spesiell kampkunst. 1827/28- Yasutsune Azato blir født. Han begynner seinere å studere kampkunst under Sokon Matsumura. 1830/32- Yasutsune Itosu blir født. Han begynner seinere å studere kampkunst under Gusukuma fra Tomari. 1837- Den legendariske konkurransen mellom Matsumura og Uehara finner sted på Kinbu kirkegården. Funakoshi refererer til denne historien i 2 av sine bøker, og trekker den frem som det ultimate målet med karate; vinne over en fiende uten å slåss.
