INFORMATION HANDBOOK ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 AIMS, PRINCIPLES AND OBJECTIVES OF WELBECK INCLUDING BOARDING PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE 1. AIMS Welbeck – The Defence Sixth Form College is a co-educational full boarding establishment, where the majority of students are funded by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) under the Defence Technical Officer and Engineer Entry Scheme (DTOEES) with a parental contribution for maintenance only, calculated on a means tested basis. It offers an A level education to preselected students following a career as technical or engineering officers within the Armed Forces or the MOD Civil Service (Defence Engineering and Science Group, DESG). Full details of admissions and associated continuation requirements is available in the Admissions Policy, Procedures and Guidance document. The College is committed to ensuring students realise their full potential through: inspiring each student to achieve the highest possible standards in STEM based studies, the broader curriculum and the military skills and leadership training programme; promoting the best habits of independent thought and learning in the pursuit of excellence so that students are equipped for university and beyond; fostering the core values of courage, discipline, respect for others, integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment so that students are role model citizens; developing students through a broad based education and a range of experiences that challenges them to discover their strengths, recognise their weaknesses and make the most of their talents at Welbeck and beyond; providing supportive pastoral care that nurtures physical health, self efficacy, emotional maturity and moral standards so that students feel safe, secure and valued; building on previously identified leadership potential by developing leadership skills and personal character ready for the challenges of service life. There is a clear focus on Mathematics and Physics, and all students are expected to take Physics to AS Level and Mathematics to A Level. Welbeck aims to provide all students with an outstanding education and the opportunity to achieve A level results that will take them to the next stage of their education or career – for the MOD students this will at university and in the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS). Welbeck also welcomes a small number of privately funded students – Welbeck Private Students (WPS), this represents up to ten per cent of the student population in any year. WPS students are expected to play a full part in every aspect of the curriculum, including military and fitness training, and the same standards and expectations will apply. There is no restriction on the range of universities or courses to which they may apply and WPS students are well equipped and prepared to continue their studies at the whole range of UK and international universities. A significant proportion of WPS students, typically 40%, will join the armed forces. A Welbeck education is founded on moral integrity, responsibility and a genuine sense of service, which together lead to inculcating the core leadership values which are not only strong in our community, but will endure when our students leave. 2. OBJECTIVES AND ‘THE WELBECK CURRICULUM’ Our academic studies combine with developing core military skills and values, but here at Welbeck, we aim to provide a broader learning environment. Our programme of intellectual, personal and physical education develops in our students a moral integrity, responsibility and a genuine sense of service. These essential personal skills are as important in military leadership as they are in making a valuable contribution to the wider community. 1/6 © Welbeck DSFC We reserve the right to update these rules and regulations. Changes will be communicated to students when necessary. A new handbook will be published at the start of each academic year. INFORMATION HANDBOOK ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 These objectives are directed within ‘The Welbeck Curriculum’ in three main areas: 2.1. Academic Teaching and Learning Academic achievement is viewed as the most important priority for pupils at Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College. Students will typically study 4 examined AS levels leading to 3 A Levels. Each student is given the opportunity to fulfil his/her academic potential, commensurate with his/her ability, and to achieve the highest possible attainment level. Whilst the academic curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the DTOEES scheme, it also seeks to promote breadth and depth of study and to encourage independence of learning and self-discipline in work habits. Within this context the College aims: to provide a tutorial system capable of monitoring and guiding the academic study of each individual pupil and enabling pastoral care to support the teachers in their work to provide all students with realistic short and long term targets, measuring their achievement by a balance of internal and external assessment to provide all students with a breadth of education through lectures, visits and outside speakers to provide each student with clear advice and guidance on his/her options and realistic aspirations for Higher Education and for his/her possible future career to establish a balanced, varied and well structured timetable to provide where possible extra help for students, outside of the formal lesson framework, to facilitate effective learning 2.2. Personal Development, Military Skills & Leadership Training and the Core Values At the heart of a Welbeck education is the personal development of each student. This happens in all areas of College life, not just within military skills and leadership training. The main emphasis of the CCF at Welbeck is the development of leadership potential and self-efficacy. Membership of the CCF is compulsory and the College benefits from having four full-time military staff, assisted by a number of CCF Officers. Regular serving personnel and our university students from the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) Squadrons also assist on a regular basis. Military Skills and Leadership Training (MSLT) takes place on two afternoons each week during autumn and spring terms. Throughout the year students also take part in a number of exercises, competitions and familiarisation visits. At Welbeck all students are expected to live by the Core Values of the Armed Services. These include: Courage involves both physical and moral courage. Having moral courage involves doing what is right. This will involve integrity. Discipline involves clearly understood rules and a legal system to enforce it. Discipline must be fairly applied both on and off duty by all those in positions of authority. The best discipline is self-discipline: innate, not imposed. Respect for others is a hallmark of the Service life: it comes from the duty to put others first and means that there is no place for prejudice, favouritism, bullying or harassment in our community. It also means students developing the mutual respect for students of different backgrounds, faiths and sexualities as befits a modern multi-cultural society. Integrity means being honest and truthful. Integrity is essential to trust. Honesty and trust are essential in a residential community such as Welbeck. Loyalty means that those in authority must be loyal to those under their charge by always acting in their best interests. Subordinates must be loyal to their leaders, their team and their duty. Being loyal does not mean that wrong-doing should be condoned or covered up: this is misplaced loyalty and questions one’s integrity. Selfless commitment means that we should accept a commitment to serve whenever and wherever we are needed, whatever the difficulties may be. Such commitment imposes 2/6 © Welbeck DSFC We reserve the right to update these rules and regulations. Changes will be communicated to students when necessary. This means putting the needs of others and the team before personal interests. 2.3. The Co-Curriculum The co-curricular programme aims to offer a wide range of opportunities in which all pupils can develop their physical fitness together with other skills and interests, while increasing self- esteem and confidence. Within this context, Welbeck – The Defence Sixth Form College aims: to provide a wide variety of activities which stimulate interest and provide contrast, specialisation and balance to a student’s everyday life to promote a programme for the individual and collective development of leadership and physical fitness skills encouraging participation and involvement at all levels of ability, encouraging progressive development in leadership and management skills to offer a varied and well-organised sporting programme, aiming to promote individual and collective excellence as well as to encourage participation by all, regardless of ability to offer students the opportunity to participate in some form of social service and to develop and foster a caring community to provide opportunity for adventure-training, promoting leadership and developing strength of character 3. PASTORAL MATTERS The College seeks to develop a close and effective partnership with parents and those adults at home who support students at Welbeck. We believe that this is crucial so that we can work together to support the students through their adolescent years, especially when the physical distance between home and College can be significant. The policies which relate to pastoral matters, and indeed other aspects of the College, are detailed elsewhere in the Handbook. It is important to note that the College Rules apply in the following circumstances: in term time, when at College, when travelling to/from home to the College, during Leave Out, on official College activities whether taking place during term time or in the holidays, and when representing the College. We emphasise the need for all members of our College community to treat others with respect and this is an expectation of Staff, Students, Parents and Guardians. 3.1.
