Rudi Steenbakkers

Welcome, members and suporters, and especially former members of Hora Est,

According to a Dutch proverb, we should not pull old cows out of the ditch. It means that we should not bring unpleasant memories back to mind. A quick google taught me that this saying Another thing that co-editor Martijn Cox originated from farmers occasionally and I noticed, when going through the having to pull a dead cow out of a ditch. old Pedels, is that our magazine changed Who could have thought that overlooking considerably over the years. The cover obvious solutions, like buidling a fence was first printed in black on a colored between the meadow and the ditch, would piece of paper. Later someone came up help to enrich our language? with a very arty (and weird, if you ask me) brownish cover. Then it changed Anyway, bringing back memories is also back, until in 2004 the current cover was what this special ‘historical’ edition of the designed. Pedel is about. Roel Merry

Hello everybody,

As chairman of the current board, it is my pleasure to welcome you to to this Pedel which is made in honor of the third lustrum of Hora Est.

Fifteen years of Hora Est may of course During the last couple of years the not pass by unnoticed, therefore two number of members of Hora Est grew special events are organized to celebrate significantly. At the moment Hora Est has this special birthday. The first took place 129 members, consisting of PhD on May 19, when a gala dance was students and supporters from the organized. 6 From the old box: ‘stoeleninventarisatie’

Martijn Cox

From the very beginning of its existence, Hora Est has been fighting for the rights of the PhD students. A very nice example of this commitment is the “stoelen- inventarisatie” of 1996. Without this petition, which was signed by 51(!) PhD students and sympathisers, we would still be sitting on the medieval torture tools that were the standards of those days. A selection of the descriptions they were asked to give of their chairs:

Another development during my PhD period was the increase in foreign PhD students. Even AntIlOpe had two transfers from Romania (Liviu) and our own Stoichkov from Bulgaria (Alex Z.). The TeMa (team managers) from AntIlOpe even organised a tactics course and Harold van M. tried to combine the foreign and Dutch playing systems… In 1999 the Pedel changed its language into English so that all Hora Est members could understand each other’s stories.

Moniek de Liefde

The laboratory for Cell and Tissue Engineering, Cellab in short, at its current location, is in use since December 2001. The lab, formerly known as the Laboratory for Cell Mechanics, is a stranger in the land of technology. No big machines, with lots of noise are harbored in the lab; instead a lot of chemicals and small equipment can be found and most of the noise is originating from one the three radios present. In this unique lab Technology meets Biology.

Entering the Cellab is not that simple, as it is shielded by an authorized entry tissues (tissue engineering). We had arranged a absent in his or her board year. Leonie performance of the very famous had some knee problems and was in ‘boyband’! And the boyband was 18 accompanied by real ‘groupies’, which of course all had to be in the first row, completely dressed up and carrying photos of their favorite band member. One of them even fainted when she saw her idol on stage. But the security guards (what would a boyband do without security guards to keep all the ladies away) helped the lady back on her feet again. The members of the boyband, Leonie (ok, with some help a ‘boy’), Francois, Erik and Roel (I know I am now forgetting someone) took their job very seriously. In particular Francois and Erik!! It was a great party, thanks to the organizers.

To all current board members and their follow-ups, make sure Hora Est survives to the next lustrum!

21 From the old box 2: the Saint and Pete

Rudi Steenbakkers

In 2001, as always, Saint Nicolas (Sinterklaas) and his faithful servant Black Pete came to W-Hoog to bring presents for the AIOs of Hora Est. What they didn’t know was that a surveillance camera captured all their actions. At the ‘Sinterklaasborrel’ the board of Hora Est showed the video tape to the AIOs, who were heavily traumatized. It turned out that the Saint and Pete were not the nice guys we all thought they were.

On their way out of W-Hoog, the Saint and Pete had noticed the camera and tried to sabotage it. While the video tape was all right, the audio tape got heavily damaged. However, five years after this shocking event, we finally managed to restore it. Here we present stills from the video tape combined with excerpts from the audio tape.

S: “Look, the AIOs placed their shoes. The one with P: “Maybe there’s also extra food for the boot probably hopes to get extra presents.” your horse in it...” S: “Of course! These AIOs are noble people.”

22 P: “Bwaagh...It stinks!” I’ll throw it away! Hey, “... It’s a carrot four your horse. Yuck! It something fell out...” still smells of sweaty feet. S: “That guy will get nothing. Let’s look at the other people’s poems.”

S: “This one is from Gerrit Peters. He’s not even an AIO. Oh well, if his poem is all right, let’s give him some candy. ‘Heilige gladiool, geef wat aan een halve zool...’ Pete, these people have no respect for a saint!” P: “Bastards! Let’s thrash this place!”

23 P: “Hmm... maybe it’s better to use a S: “Bull shit! Miindless violence always subtle method...” does the trick!”

S: “Now let’s see if I can hack this thing and find out if there’s anything valuable in W-Hoog, something we could sell on the black market in Spain. Hey! I can see where Hora Est stores its beer. That’s even better; I could use a drink!” S: “It should be in here...”

24 P: “All of the poems are awful.” S: “The thanks I get for centuries of faithful service. I’ve got to take a leak.”

S: “Beer! And it’s mine, all mine, muhahaha!” P: “Ähum” S: “Ours, all ours...”

S: “Hurry up, it’s time to go!” P: “I can’t pee when someone else is present.” S: “I’ll leave you and little Pete alone then. But hurry!”

P: “Stealing is more fun than handing out presents plus you get something out of it.” S: “Yes, we’ll redefine our mission statement when we get back.” 25 Dynamics and Control Technology Lab

Roel Merry

The DCT Motion laboratory is located at floor -1 in building WH and is home to the Dynamics and Control Technology (DCT) group, which is composed of the Dynamics and Control section of prof. Nijmeijer and the Control Systems Technology section of prof. Steinbuch. In the DCT laboratory both PhD and MSc students have the possibility to perform experiments with a wide variety of motion systems. A lot of setups and systems are also used for educational purposes during several courses, projects, and internships. Fig.2: Setup pizza case.

The general research objective of the Dynamics and Control Technology group is thestudy of all aspects related to design, dynamics and control of high- performance mechanical systems. This covers the full range of topics such as design, modeling and analysis of systems, controller synthesis, signal and performance analysis. The research areas include non-linear dynamics of mechanical systems, (structural) acoustics and noise control, structural optimization, advanced motion systems, process-control, automotive technology and mechanical design.

Some of the setups which are actively used as a test-bed for research are the drill-string, a vibration isolation system, Fig.1: Several robotic setups. the RRR robot manipulator, the one-sided impact flexible beam, and a printer paper path control setup. 26 Other setups include the FAMM direct drive robot (Philips CFT), four mechanical pick-and-place units, a 1- DOF medical manipulator with force feedback, an H-drive pick-and-place system, and the inverted pendulum.

Two of the mechanical pick-and-place units are used for th so-called pizza project in which groups of fourth year students have to move (plastic) pizza’s from one rack to another. The setup is Fig.3: Mars landscape with LEGO rover. shown in Fig. 2. A new educational setup in the laboratory is the Mars landscape (see Fig. 3) on which a Marsrover built The real-time hardware, data acquisition of LEGO has to be programmed to find and measurement equipment includes water on Mars. Furthermore, the over 10 dSpace systems, 5 SigLab laboratory has 10 fourth order rotating measurement systems, and over 30 mass systems, 10 resonating mass TUeDAC systems. In the laboratory systems, and 10 printer setups, which several work stations are created where are used for a wide variety of educational MSc students can perform their research purposes. in a stimulating environment. Key in the functioning of the lab is the support The development of a real-time Linux- provided by the technical staff, both based DVD makes it possible for mechanical and electrical. So the DCT students to perform experiments with a Motion lab is a lively location where wide variety of setups using their own research is performed on the dynamics notebook computers as real-time control and control of present-day high- processors in combination with a performance motion systems. TUeDACs data acquisition device.

27 Hora Est 3rd Lustrum Gala

Famke Kraaijeveld After the dinner, gala pictures were shot and everybody received fake money to gamble at the blackjack table.

This year Hora Est celebrates its 15th anniversary. With two old-board members (Angelique Balguid and Debby Gawlitta) and three current board members (Arjen den Hamer, Kristel Boonen and me) a committee was formed to organize an event for our members and staff, a dance with dinner.

While one part of the guests were gambling away their money, the others were dancing to the music played by cover band Mrs. Daniels (www.mrsdaniels.nl). They played various pop and rock songs, impressing the crowd with their talent The dance took place in the wonderful and their enthusiasm. atmosphere of the DAF museum (www.dafmuseum.nl/) whose volunteers served drinks the whole evening. Between the old houses and with trucks on the background, the buffet and dance were opened by current chairman Roel Merry.

The evening ended with the announcement of the winner of the blackjack tournament, Martijn Cox. And of course there were cigars at the end.

Three hurrahs for Hora Est!! 28 The gala committee.

The board of 2006. The official blackjack winner.
