Along with the above expansions, of course still going strong, is our printed edition for Toronto, Ontario, and Montreal. Next year, the directory will be celebrating 30 big and exciting years in print. An AMAZING feat to say the least. We are now more relevant and accessible than ever with you, our readers, being able to access information and find friendly businesses and services on our print, online, and social media platforms. At INspired Media and The Pink Pages directory, we truly love our LGBTQ+ community: we live it and breathe it every day. Connecting our community across North America is a joy and a pleasure for our entire team here. Working with incredibly wonderful LGBTQ friendly businesses fills our days with excitement. Every new business reaching out to our community is a reason to celebrate. Please continue to support those businesses who support our community and who make it possible to have LGBTQ+ media, to create events, and who support the work of our community organizations. To our advertisers: we wish you a very successful year ahead. Good luck. Bonne chance. LESBIAN MOTHERS ASSOCIATION (514) 846-1543 www.aml-lma.org [email protected] VOLUME IV No. I NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2002 So, What’s the Scoop? By Mona Greenbaum, LMA coordinator This year has been a really remarkable year for lesbian mothers. The landscape for our families has changed so much since the group began in 1998. The civil union bill (Bill 84), which passed unanimously last June in the Quebec National Assembly, has given parents and children in lesbian-headed families full and equal rights. We also have finally gained access to a fertility clinic: The Montreal Fertility Center (514-369-6116). Procréa Montreal will probably also provide access in the months to come, which will mean that the Quebec City branch of Procréa will provide access to lesbians that live in the capital. Forming our families has become so much less complicated. The huge amount of media attention that focused on our families has had many important effects. Most Quebec citizens now know that lesbians have kids, that our families exist and for those who have followed the debate it has become increasingly clear that a whole body of scientific research is already in place, in fact has been accumulating for the past 20 years, supporting what we already knew: our children are fine…they are no more likely than the children of heterosexuals to suffer from psychological, emotional or sexual and gender identity problems. This positive sensitization can only be helpful. Another positive effect that we have noted in the past year is that lesbians have come back into the forefront of social involvement.

Queering Vancouver: The Work of the lgbtq Civic Advisory Committee, 2009-14 Catherine Murray* he proposition, so often asserted, that Vancouver is an avant- garde paradise for people who identify as lgbtq (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer) merits careful examination.1 What evidence is usually cited? Social movement historians confirm that T lgbtq the city was the site of the first organization – the Association for Social Knowledge (ask) – that influenced national and regional social movements; that it developed a “thick,” active, and diverse associative structure of local gay, lesbian, and transgender rights and service groups; that it was the site of transformative protests or events; and that it is today well ensconced within Pacific Northwest and global social networks.2 Its lgbtq groups have achieved a distinctive record of groundbreaking struggles – even if there is as yet little agreement among social historians * I am indebted to the International Women’s World (2011) panel, the members of which discussed the first draft of this article; to Sarah Sparks, research assistant and MA graduate in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University; the constructive anonymous reviewers from BC Studies; and, especially, BC Studies’ editor Graeme Wynn. 1 Manon Tremblay, ed., Queer Mobilizations: Social Movement Activism and Canadian Public Policy (Vancouver: ubc Press, 2015), 31. Like Tremblay, I use the term “queer” to designate all non-heterosexual people. 2 For queer urban history of Vancouver, see Anne-Marie Bouthillette, “Queer and Gendered Housing: A Tale of Two Neighborhoods in Vancouver,” in Queers in Space: Communities, Public Spaces, Sites of Resistance, ed.
