N.S.W.A.RL. Football Record 1989 STATE LEAGUE PREVIEW There are only three rounds of football to be played on Saturday. The m·atch of the round St George at home to Parramatta, Hills hosting North Shore and Western Suburbs on their home turf against Campbelltown. These are the remaining games out of Round 4. The match of the day will see St George at home defy the Parramatta Goannas. With only six rounds to play after today, the results of every match will be significant in the battle for the QBE Insurance Premiership Final Four. St George versus Parramatta at Olds Park is not only the match of the round, it will be something of a ladder decider· both these teams are keen to keep a grip on the top four ladder positions. Coaches Steve Taubert (Saints) and Ken Welsh (Parramatta) could only be pleased with their respective teams performances this season. Parramatta have shook off or even shaken off their average 1988 display while St George have cast off their habit of narrow losses to be a better team this season. Parramatta has the four 'B's' David Barwick, Neil Brunton, Neil Briscoe and Russell (Bomber) Brown all ready and willing to kick a few goals for the Blue and Gold. St George have equally a strong line up of goal kickers led by Mark McGrath, Chris Ansell, David Wadling plus the versatile winger Mirko Milic given the opportunity. With a bit of luck chapter 32 of the 'Northside Derby' will be played on Saturday between Hills and North Shore at Pennant Hills Oval. Both teams have been improved by their recent games and while ladder positions are desperate the game could be even. There have been 31 previous encounters in the Northside Derby series with honours squarely in favour of North Shore - but Hills are currently holders of the Avco Financial Services Northside 'Derby' Shield. It will be the individual clashes all around the ground that could decide the result. Captain/Coach of Shore, Tony Smith, is in superb form and his strength at the centre bounces could be dominant. He will be aided by the laconic ex Wagga player Alistair Watchhom. Hills Doug Scholz cannot be denied at the centre bounces and his clash with Tony Smith could be exciting to see. Around the centre, old rivals bouncy Peter Carr (North Shore) and Hills Mickey Toy should test each others mettle. Allan Gardiner at full forward and erstwhile defender Steve Barrett who have been getting amongst the goals lately will test the Black and Red defence led by Peter Johnson and Anthony Smyth. Defence for the Black and Reds has also been strengthened by the inclusion of talented youngsters Julian Doyle and Nigel McLaughlin. · While at the other end of the ground Bears Peter Robertson, Anthony Croke and the tall marking Troy Tonkin will test Hills defence. Hills had an awful start to the '89 season but have, under Coach Ray Johns, well and truly melded some talent from the juniors with their '88 players into a much improved team since Round 1. Shores teamwork is coming together after the rain plagued patchy start to the season and they could, on paper, certainly have the edge on Hills. And in the other match the Campbelltown Blues will come visiting the Western Suburbs Magpies on the Magpies home ground, Wagener Oval. N.S.WA.RL Football Record 1989 AROUND THE TRAPS COMEBACK AGAIN!
