3 Grußwort des Geschäftsführenden Direktors

Liebe Mitglieder, Freunde und Förderer des Interdisziplinären Zentrums für Ostasienstudien, sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, ein besonderes akademisches Jahr 2018/19 liegt hinter uns: Mit vielen von Ihnen konnten wir das 10-jährige Jubiläum unseres Zentrums feiern. Aus diesem Anlass hielt im Dezember Tang-Preisträger Prof. Dr. Stephen Owen, Harvard University, die Richard-Wilhelm-Vorlesungen zur chinesischen Lyrik. Im Januar sprach der ehemalige Chef-Ökonom der Weltbank, Prof. Dr. Justin Yifu Lin, Peking University, gleichsam vor „ausverkauftem“ Haus zur chinesischen Wirtschaftsentwicklung. Die gemeinsam mit dem Research Center SAFE und der Society for International Development ausgerichtete Veranstaltung markierte den Beginn eines neuen Veranstaltungsformats, des Goethe Asia Forum Frankfurt, das künftig in größeren Abständen öffentlichkeitswirksame Vortragsver- anstaltungen mit Asienbezug für ein breites Publikum im Rhein-Main-Gebiet bieten soll.

Diese Gelegenheiten konnten wir zugleich nutzen, um uns mit unserem Wissenschaft- lichen Beirat und Kuratorium sowie unseren Unterstützern innerhalb und außerhalb der Universität über die weiteren Entwicklungen des IZO auszutauschen. So endete nach über 6-jähriger Laufzeit die Förderung des Inter-Zentren-Programms „Afrikas Asiatische Optionen“ (AFRASO) im Februar 2019. Die Arbeiten und Kooperationen werden nunmehr unter dem neuen Dach „Forum AFRASO“ fortgeführt, um diesen wichtigen Forschungsschwerpunkt an der Goethe-Universität verankert zu halten und von Frankfurt aus weiter ein Netzwerk mit Partnern im Globalen Süden aber auch in den USA, China und Japan zu spannen.

Als neues Forschungsprojekt treiben wir unter der Leitung unserer Stellvertretenden Geschäftsführenden Direktorin, Prof. Dr. Zhiyi Yang, das Thema „Classicism in Asia“ voran. Im aktuellen Sommersemester findet hierzu eine Ringvorlesung mit Expertinnen

Dear Members, Friends and Sponsors of the Interdisciplinary Centre for East Asian Studies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The academic year 2018/19 was a special year in that, together with many of you, we were able to celebrate the tenth anniversary of our Centre. To mark this occasion, the Tang Prize winner Professor Stephen Owen (Harvard University) gave the Richard Wilhelm Lectures on Chinese poetry in December. In January, Professor Justin Yifu Lin (Peking University), the former chief economist of the World Bank, spoke to a packed auditorium on economic development in China. This lecture, organized in cooperation with the SAFE Research Center and the Society for International Development, was the first of a new type of academic event, the Goethe Asia Forum Frankfurt, to be held from now on at irregular intervals. Its aim is to present topics of Asian interest to a wider public in the Rhine-Main region.

These events also provided an opportunity for discussions with our Academic Advisory Board and Board of Trustees as well as our supporters within and outside the University about future developments at the IZO. One such development is that in February 2019 after more than six years the financial support ended for Africa’s Asian Options (AFRASO), our inter-centre-programme with the Centre for Interdisciplinary African Studies. However, its activities and cooperative ventures will now be carried on under the new umbrella “Forum AFRASO”. This enables us to keep this important field of research firmly anchored at Goethe University and to continue building a network with partners in the Global South, as well as in the United States, China and Japan.

Under the aegis of our deputy chair, Professor Zhiyi Yang, a new research project, “Classicism in Asia”, is making good headway. In this context a series of lectures by experts on East and South-East Asia are held in the course of the current summer

5 und Experten zu Ost- und Südostasien in Kooperation mit dem Max-Planck-Institut für empirische Ästhetik statt. Weiter verfolgen wir ein künftiges Projekt zur Mobilität in Ostasien, in dem wir die Verknüpfung von Erinnerung und Migration interdisziplinär untersuchen. Aber auch der wissenschaftliche Nachwuchs, dessen Förderung sich das IZO besonders auf die Fahnen geschrieben hat, trägt neue Impulse für unsere Forschung bei. Beispielhaft sei hier der von Ryanne Flock, M.A., organisierte internationale Work- shop „Street Vending and the Dynamics of Modern Urbanization“ genannt.

In personeller Hinsicht gibt es zu berichten, dass Frau Jun.-Prof. Dr. Elsa Clavé auf eine Tenure-Track Professur für Sprachen und Kulturen Südostasiens an der Universität Hamburg berufen wurde. Prof. Dr. Zhiyi Yang hat für 2019/20 ein Fellowship am Wissen- schaftskolleg zu Berlin erhalten. Das IZO gratuliert den Kolleginnen herzlich zu dieser Anerkennung ihrer Arbeit. Aus unserem wissenschaftlichen Beirat ausgeschieden ist Prof. em. Dr. Klaus Antoni, Universität Tübingen, dem wir für seine langjährige Unter- stützung sehr zu Dank verpfl ichtet sind.

Wenn Sie diese Zeilen lesen, dürfte meine Nachfolgerin oder mein Nachfolger mich als Geschäftsführender Direktor turnusmäßig abgelöst haben. Im Namen des IZO, aber auch persönlich möchte ich den zahlreichen Partnern, Förderern und Freunden des Zentrums, aber auch dessen Mitgliedern für Ihre Arbeit und Unterstützung danken. Was auf diese Weise ermöglicht wurde, darüber geben die folgenden Seiten Auskunft. Ich wünsche anregende Lektüre und hoffe, Sie bleiben uns weiter gewogen!

6 semester, in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. A future project focuses on mobility in East Asia, conducting interdisciplinary studies on the interconnexions between memory and migration. Our junior staff, whose careers the IZO is committed to promoting, are also giving new impulses to ongoing research. One example of many is the international workshop “Street Vending and the Dynamics of Modern Urbanization”, organized by Ryanne Flock, MA.

The latest staff news is that junior professor Elsa Clavé has been offered a tenure track professorship for the languages and cultures of South East Asia at the University of Hamburg. Professor Zhiyi Yang has been awarded a fellowship at the Berlin Institute for Advanced Studies (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin) for 2019/20. The IZO extends its sincere congratulations to our colleagues on this recognition of their work. Professor Emeritus Klaus Antoni (University of Tübingen) has retired from his position on our Academic Advisory Board. We owe him many thanks for his engagement of many years.

As you read these lines it will have been the turn of one of my colleagues to take over my position as Managing Director. On behalf of the IZO but also on my own behalf I would like to thank the many partners, sponsors and friends of the Centre for their work and commitment. In October of 2018, 9 different Korean movies were screened over three days. Various Korean cultural experiences were offered during the opening ceremony, and a promotional video for the Korean department at Goethe University was also presented. Around 6,000 people participa- ted in this event. This event was not only an opportunity to promote the Korean Studies department, but also for the students at the department to interact with the public.

Ziel der Veranstaltung war es, den japan- orientierten Studierenden der Asienstudien- gänge die Möglichkeit zu geben, mit japanischen Unternehmen im Rhein-Main- Gebiet in Verbindung zu treten, wechsel- seitige Erwartungen abzugleichen und Kontakte für mögliche Praktika oder Berufsoptionen zu knüpfen. Am 23.11.2018 wurde von den Koreastudi- en der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt der „2. Deutsche UCC Wettbewerb für Koreanisch“ veranstaltet. Das Thema war ‚The Beauty of Korea‘. Hierfür haben die TeilnehmerInnen ein Video über ihre Erlebnisse mit Korea in Deutschland auf Koreanisch erstellt. Die Teilnahme am Wettbewerb war für die Studierenden der Koreastudien und Lernende der koreanischen Sprache in Deutschland nicht nur eine Chance, ihre Sprachkenntnisse praktisch einzusetzen und zu präsentieren. Sie konnten auch das Land Korea, das sie individuell durch ihr Studium kennengelernt haben, kreativ vorstellen. Der Preis für den ersten und zweiten Platz waren Stipendien für einen Sprachkurs am Sprachinstitut der Ewha Womans University.
