    Haverford College Foundations and Applications of Authorship Attribution Analysis Rohan Shukla Computer Science Senior Thesis Professor Deepak Kumar December 15, 2018 Abstract Authorship attribution is the process of identifying the author of a given work. This thesis surveys the history and foundations of authorship attribution, and then analyzes multiple machine learning methods that are used frequently in this field. In the classic authorship attribution problem, a text with unknown authorship is assigned an author from a set of candidate authors for whom documents of irrefutable authorship exist. Prior to the 1960’s, authorship attribution was a linguistics-focused field in which linguistic experts would determine the authors of unknown texts. In 1964, the analysis of ‘The Federalist Papers’ by Mosteller and Wallace was the first statistically driven approach to authorship attribution. This study marked the beginning of authorship attribution as a computational field rather than a linguistics field. The modern approach to authorship attribution involves selecting a set of linguistic features from the texts at hand and then applying a machine learning method on that feature set to classify authorship. This thesis analyzes multiple machine learning methods used for this purpose. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is a popular unsupervised learning method that considers each text’s feature set as a vector in a multivariate vector space and has had success in authorship attribution. Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are a powerful supervised learning technique that creates a linear classifier used to attribute authorship. SVMs have outperformed all other analytical techniques used in authorship attribution. Due to the plethora of electronic texts that exist, authorship attribution has extensive applications in many different fields, with current research focusing primarily on developing application-specific methodologies.

Adams Abstract Forty-Second President of the United States Bill Clinton was impeached due to his engagement in an extramarital affair and a subsequent cover-up. Inconsistent with history, the U.S. public granted him absolution, signified by steady—even improved—approval ratings. His wife, Hillary Clinton, is currently deep into her second campaign for the U.S. presidency. This study involves a feminist textual analysis of media rhetoric as it relates to her, with the goal of answering the question: Do U.S. voters hold Hillary Clinton culpable for her husband’s indiscretions? Geraldine Ferraro introduced women to the modern national political stage for executive office when Walter Mondale chose her as his running mate in advance of the 1984 presidential election (Meeks 175). Had Mondale fared better in the polls, Ferraro’s viable candidacy would have embodied the true potential for women’s unadulterated acceptance onto the ballot as equals (Meeks 175). With Mondale’s overwhelming defeat in favor of a re-elected Ronald Reagan, though, the trail of bread crumbs Ferraro left as she navigated through the dense male- dominated political forest grew stale. It was 24 years before U.S. voters took another woman seriously as a candidate for a run at the White House (Meeks 175). That year was 2008, when in fact both major political parties each placed a woman on its ticket: Democrat Hillary Clinton, and Republican John McCain’s vice presidential pick, Sarah Palin.

And the kicker was, the author was Anonymous. "Primary Colors" is an unblinking and clever look at a womanizing, doughnut-eating Southerner seeking the presidency, come hell or high water. "Newsweek" columnist Joe Klein finally emerged as the author and drew some ricocheting verbal fire. But whatever criticism he received, he more than made up for it in book sales. The novel is one of the most popular political books ever. The similarities between the book and Clinton Administration are hard to ignore, and a film based on the book captures some of the surface qualities of the current White House. Here's the first chapter of Klein's "Primary Colors." Judge for yourself. CHAPTER ONE He was a big fellow, looking seriously pale on the streets of Harlem in deep summer. I am small and not so dark, not very threatening to Caucasians; I do not strut my stuff. We shook hands.
