ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the species composition and range of Mediterranean Blennies (Ac- tinopterygii, Blenniidae) occurring in river estuaries and lagoon systems of the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, and to characterise the length–weight relationship of the specimens. A total of 15 sites were surveyed from November 2014 to June 2017. A total of 210 individuals representing 3 fish species (Rusty blenny-Parablennius sanguinolentus, Freshwater blenny-Salaria fluviatilis and Peacock blenny-Salaria pavo) were sampled from five (Beşgöz Creek Estuary, Manavgat River Es- tuary, Karpuzçay Creek Estuary, Köyceğiz Lagoon Lake and Beymelek Lagoon Lake) of the locali- ties investigated. The high juvenile densities of S. fluviatilis in Karpuzçay Creek Estuary and P. sanguinolentus in Beşgöz Creek Estuary were observed. Various threat factors were observed in five different native habitats of Blenny species. The threats on the habitat and the population of the species include the introduction of exotic species, water ORCID IDs of the authors: pollution, and more importantly, the destruction of habitats. A survey carried out around Cyprus during September 2014 documented the occurrence of 25 alien fishes. Seven Lessepsian migrants ( Hippocampus fuscus Rüppell, 1838, Nemipterus randalli Russell, 1986, Ostorhinchus fasciatus (Shaw, 1790), Parupeneus forsskali (Fourmanoir & Guézé, 1976), Pomadasys stridens (Forsskål, 1775), Sphyraena obtusata Cuvier, 1829 and Spratelloides delicatulus (Bennett, 1832)) were recorded for the first time, increasing to 35 the number of alien fishes recorded around the island. Four of these first records can be considered as 'established', whereas the 2013 first record of Pterois volitans/miles is confirmed by new findings placing the species as newly 'established' in Cyprus. All the recorded alien fishes of Cyprus are Lessepsian migrants, 80% of which can be considered established and four of them are invasive. The rapid increase of alien fish species over time in Cyprus supports the accelerating tropicalisation process observed elsewhere in the Mediterranean over the last decades. -

Uba Department of Fisheries Science and Technology, School of Marine Fisheries and Technology, Mindanao State University at Naawan, Naawan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines [email protected] ABSTRACT A preliminary investigation on the size-specific variation in the length-weight relationship, relative condition factor, and gonad maturation of Bigeye scad, Selar crumenopthalmus, was conducted from April to May 2018 in the northern Sulu Sea, Philippines. A total of 435 samples were collected using a ring net. The results showed a shift from isometric to negative allometric growth pattern, good condition, and earlier maturation in males in S. crumenopthalmus. These findings help us understand some aspects of the S. crumenopthalmus population in the area; however, further research needs to be conducted with increased sampling duration and frequency. Keywords: growth, allometry, northern Sulu Sea, length classes INTRODUCTION The Bigeye scad Selar crumenopthalmus is a commercially important marine fish species caught in the coastal waters of the Philippines throughout the year and contributes to over 5% of the country’s total capture fisheries production (BFAR, 2016). Hand lines, ring nets, purse seines, and trawls are used to catch this species which is primarily utilized as food and is considered as a cheap source of protein for low-income families in the country (Trinidad et al., 1993). -

RADHAKRISHNAN Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi - 682 016, Kerala, India e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Food and feeding habits, sex ratio, spawning behaviour, size at first maturity, fecundity and ova diameter of the shrimp scad Alepes djedaba (Forsskal, 1775) exploited off Cochin coast, Kerala are presented in this study. A. djedaba is a pelagic carnivore, with a preference for fishes. Low gastrosomatic index (GaSI) values and very low feeding intensity during spawning season indicated poor feeding behaviour during the period. The sex ratio did not deviate from the expected 1:1 ratio. Size at first maturity was estimated to be193 mm for male and 174 mm for female. Monthly gonadosomatic index (GSI) values, monthly distribution of gonadal maturation stages and ova diameter revealed that the species had a prolonged breeding season from June to September with a peak in July. Estimated absolute fecundity was 59,744 to 3,30,190 with an average of 1,94,965 eggs. (Mullidae), is described from six specimens collected off Angoche, northern Mo- zambique, during a research cruise of the RV Dr. F. Nansen in August 2009. Upeneus saiab n. sp. differs from all conge- neric species in the following combination of characteristics: seven dorsal-fin spines, 29 total gill rakers, body depth at anal-fin origin 17–19% SL, and pectoral-fin length 20–21% SL. Detailed comparisons with the eight other species of the japonicus group are made and a key for Western Indian Ocean species is provided. A new record of Upeneus pori for Kwa- Zulu-Natal, South Africa, is reported based on in situ photographs. The need for further exploration of the rather long and ecologically diverse Mozambican coast and adjacent areas of southeastern Africa for the occurrence of yet undescribed or unreported goatfish species is emphasized. This is a medium-sized fish up to 20 cm in length (commonly 7–18 cm) with an elongated, moderately compressed body. It has a rounded snout with two short, thin barbels. Two well-separated dorsal fins are present; the first of them has 8 spines (the first spine is minute and the second spine is the largest), while the second fin has 8–9 soft rays, directly above the anal fin (which has 1 spine and 6–8 soft rays). Between the two dorsal fins there are 5–7 scales. The tail fin is deeply forked, the upper lobe marked with diagonal black bars. The dorsal colour is pinkish-red, and the belly is white. Upeneus pori has no yellow longitudinal stripe; both tail fin lobes are striped; and it has seven dorsal spines. Pseudupeneus prayensis has a spine on the bony flap that covers the gills, and no stripes on the tail fin. Other species that look similar Identification and Habitat The goldband goatfish is found in coastal waters with muddy and sandy substrates at depths of 20-130 m, where it forms large schools. It usually swims fast, stopping briefly to feed on benthic animals detected by the barbels on its chin. -
