Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, November 12, 2015 Braves.com Braves open to talks about Simmons By Mark Bowman / MLB.com | @mlbbowman | 12:19 AM ET BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Braves are listening to some clubs that have shown interest in Andrelton Simmons, but this does not mean they are actively shopping the young shortstop, who is widely considered one of the game's top defensive assets. Multiple sources confirmed that the Braves have discussed Simmons during this week's General Managers Meetings, but although talks are seemingly ongoing with at least one club, a deal did not seem to be imminent late Wednesday night. Simmons is a multiple Gold Glove Award winner who has been described by general manager John Coppolella as the "best defensive player in the history of the game." His value is enhanced by the fact that he is under contract through the 2020 season. Though the Braves do not necessarily want to part ways with Simmons, they recognize that he is one of the few chips they could use to net a big return, one that could provide them the significant offensive piece they need. Thus they are expected to continue listening to offers. Pierzynski to return to Braves on 1-year deal By Mark Bowman / MLB.com | @mlbbowman | November 11th, 2015 BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Braves feared that the success A.J. Pierzynski had in 2015 would lead him to agree to a more-lucrative deal elsewhere. But before seeing how high his price might go, Pierzynski agreed to return to Atlanta on Wednesday Multiple Major League sources confirmed Pierzynski has agreed to a one-year deal that is pending a physical exam.

He got his nickname because he was born in the year of the Tiger. As a young child he loved to paint. When Tiger was 13, he saw Louis Armstrong perform live in Osaka, Japan. “He was painting the air with his trumpet” recalls Okoshi. An enlightening experience, 6 months later Tiger picked up his first trumpet. Today, Okoshi often describes the relationship with his horn saying “When I’m playing, I want to paint the air with my colorful tone. Choices between long or short strokes, quickly or slowly, high in the canvas or low, brighter color or darker, with a fat brush or a pen. Paint the air one note at a time.” In 1972, after Tiger graduated from Kwansei Gakuin University with a bachelor of commerce degree, he got married and went to the United States for his honeymoon. Neither he nor his wife spoke English. “We took a Greyhound bus all the way across the country from Los Angeles to Boston, but when we arrived in Boston, somehow we knew that we couldn’t go back.” They decided to sell their return tickets and paid for Tiger’s tuition at Berklee College of Music.

A Major League Revolution? 118 Acknowledgments 140 Prologue In the autumn of 2006, the Boston Red Sox committed the scarcely imaginable sum of over $100 million to secure the services of a single remarkable athlete. Remarkable, yes, but remarkably untested in the competitive environment of the major leagues. How do we explain this extraordinary commitment to bring Daisuke Matsuzaka to Boston? Although Japanese stars have been recruited to other teams in recent years, this offer dwarfed that of the Yankees to Hideki Matsui or the Mariners to Ichiro Suzuki. The Red Sox team owners, headed by John Henry, a fabulously successful trader in commodity futures, are savvy businessmen. And this was surely in some measure a business decision. But to say that simply begs a further question. Who are the customers so demanding they made the investment in an untested Japanese pitcher seem necessary? What sort of fans are devoted enough to pay the ticket prices, buy the goods, and watch the cable broadcasts that might allow the investment to pay off? Probably they are people a bit crazy like me. Like many children growing up in New England, even in those years when the team was mediocre at best, my relationship to the Red Sox was imprinted in my consciousness as if from a pre-natal link.
