The KDevelop IDE closes this gap and makes it a joy to work within a complete, integrated development environment, combining the use of the GNU standard development tools such as the g++ compiler and the gdb debugger with the advantages of a GUI-based environment that automates all standard actions and allows the developer to concentrate on the work of writing software instead of managing command-line tools. It also offers direct and quick access to source files and docu- mentation. KDevelop primarily aims to provide the best means to rapidly set up and write KDE software; it also supports extended features such as GUI designing and translation in con- junction with other tools available especially for KDE development. The KDevelop IDE itself is published under the GNU Public License (GPL), like KDE, and is therefore publicly avail- able at no cost—including its source code—and it may be used both for free and for commer- cial development. -

The standard Java class library already has a solution for HTTP messaging. An open-source implementation of these classes is bundled with Android’s class library, which is based on Apache Harmony. It’s simple and bare- bones in its structure and, while it supports features like proxy servers, cookies (to some degree), and SSL, the one thing that it lacks more than anything else is a class interface and component structure that doesn’t leave you bathed in tears. Still, more elaborate HTTP solutions are often wrappers around the standard Java interfaces and, if you don’t need all the abstraction provided, for example, by Apache HttpClient interfaces, the stock Java classes may not only be sufficient, they also perform much better thanks to a much slimmer, more low-level implementation. Problem You must perform simple networking tasks via HTTP (such as downloading a file) and you want to avoid the performance penalty imposed by the higher-level, much larger, and more complex Apache HttpClient implementation. Solution If you ever find yourself in this situation, you probably want to do HTTP conversations through a java.net.HttpURLConnection. -

BillG the Manager “Intelli…what?”–Bill Gates The breadth of the Microsoft product line and the rapid turnover of core technologies all but precluded BillG from micro-managing the company in spite of the perceptions and lore around that topic. In less than 10 years the technology base of the business changed from the 8-bit BASIC era to the 16-bit MS-DOS era and to now the tail end of the 16-bit Windows era, on the verge of the Win32 decade. How did Bill manage this — where and how did he engage? This post introduces the topic and along with the next several posts we will explore some specific projects. At 38, having grown Microsoft as CEO from the start, Bill was leading Microsoft at a global scale that in 1993 was comparable to an industrial-era CEO. Even the legendary Thomas Watson Jr., son of the IBM founder, did not lead IBM until his 40s. Microsoft could never have scaled the way it did had BillG managed via a centralized hub-and-spoke system, with everything bottlenecked through him. In many ways, this was BillG’s product leadership gift to Microsoft—a deeply empowered organization that also had deep product conversations at the top and across the whole organization. This video from the early 1980’s is a great introduction to the breadth of Microsoft’s product offerings, even at a very early stage of the company. It also features some vintage BillG voiceover and early sales executive Vern Raburn.
