SARNA "Pues have never yet found an historian," John M. Neale com plained, when he undertook to survey the subject of church seating for the Cambridge Camden Society in 1842. 1 To a large extent, the same situation prevails today in connection with "pues" in the American syn agogue. Although it is common knowledge that American synagogue seating patterns have changed greatly over time - sometimes following acrimonious, even violent disputes - the subject as a whole remains unstudied, seemingly too arcane for historians to bother with. 2 Seating patterns, however, actually reflect down-to-earth social realities, and are richly deserving of study. Behind wearisome debates over how sanctuary seats should be arranged and allocated lie fundamental disagreements over the kinds of social and religious values that the synagogue should project and the relationship between the synagogue and the larger society that surrounds it. As we shall see, where people sit reveals much about what they believe. The necessarily limited study of seating patterns that follows focuses only on the most important and controversial seating innovation in the American synagogue: mixed (family) seating. Other innovations - seats that no longer face east, 3 pulpits moved from center to front, 4 free (un assigned) seating, closed-off pew ends, and the like - require separate treatment. As we shall see, mixed seating is a ramified and multifaceted issue that clearly reflects the impact of American values on synagogue life, for it pits family unity, sexual equality, and modernity against the accepted Jewish legal (halachic) practice of sexual separatiop in prayer. -

Rayner Introduction As we all know, the Emancipation was a great turning point in the history of Judaism, although ‘point' is hardly the right word, since it was a long-drawn- out process extending from the eighteenth century into the twentieth. Nevertheless the initial impact of it was often felt by a single generation, and in Germany by the generation of those born during the Napoleonic era. As we all know; too, the initial impact was for many of the newly emancipated German Jews a negative one so far as their Jewish religious life was concerned because the revolutionary educational, linguistic, cultural and social changes they experienced caused them to feel uncomfortable in the old- style synagogues. And as we all know as well, it is to this problem, of the alienation of emancipated Jewry from the traditional synagogue that the Reformers first and foremost addressed themselves. They believed that if only the synagogue services could be made more attractive, that would halt and perhaps reverse w the drift. 0 . _ {:1 j N In retrospect we can see that they were only partly right. There are other 8E}; factors besides the nature of synagogue worship which determine or influence the extent to which individuals will affirm their Jewish identity \ :8 " and adhere to their Jewish faith, and subsequent generations of Reformers 13E came to recognise that and to address themselves to these other issues also. JEWISH STATISTICS 277 JEWISH STATISTICS The statistics of Jews in the world rest largely upon estimates. In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other countries, official figures are obtainable. In the main, however, the num- bers given are based upon estimates repeated and added to by one statistical authority after another. For the statistics given below various authorities have been consulted, among them the " Statesman's Year Book" for 1910, the English " Jewish Year Book " for 5670-71, " The Jewish Ency- clopedia," Jildische Statistik, and the Alliance Israelite Uni- verselle reports. THE UNITED STATES ESTIMATES As the census of the United States has, in accordance with the spirit of American institutions, taken no heed of the religious convictions of American citizens, whether native-born or natural- ized, all statements concerning the number of Jews living in this country are based upon estimates. The Jewish population was estimated— In 1818 by Mordecai M. Noah at 3,000 In 1824 by Solomon Etting at 6,000 In 1826 by Isaac C. Harby at 6,000 In 1840 by the American Almanac at 15,000 In 1848 by M. A. Berk at 50,000 In 1880 by Wm. B. JISMOR 15 Exploring Different Interpretations of Zionism within American Reform Judaism: Report on Historical Documents and Current Situation Anri Ishiguro Abstract: This note is a report on part of my current research project exploring in what context a pro-Zionist slant within American Reform Judaism has emerged and how the term “Zionism” has been interpreted. I conducted research at the American Jewish Archives (AJA), located at Hebrew Union College, the Reform Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, from February to March 2019. This report describes part of my research results. During my stay in the United States, I also had the opportunity to participate in the 2nd KAKEHASHI Project “Visiting Program to Los Angeles and San Francisco by Japanese Researchers of Jewish Studies,” an exchange program launched by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As part of the project, I was able to visit Temple Israel of Hollywood, a Reform synagogue where I met Rabbi John L. Rosove (1949-), the most recent National Chairman of the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA). In this report, also serving as a kind of record of my stay in US, I would like to present one aspect of Zionist views that positively interpret Zionism within American Reform Judaism, showing the historical transition of interpretations and the current viewpoint of on Zionism by introducing historical material stored in the AJA and Rabbi Rosove’s view. Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies Session Many of us in the field of modern Jewish studies have felt the need for an active working group interested in discussing our various projects, papers, and books, particularly as we develop into more mature scholars. Even more, we want to engage other committed scholars and respond to their new projects, concerns, and methodological approaches to the study of modern Jews and Judaism, broadly construed in terms of period and place. To this end, since 2001, we have convened a “Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies” that meets yearly in connection with the Association for Jewish Studies Annual Conference on the Saturday night preceding the conference. The purpose of this group is to gather interested scholars together and review works in progress authored by members of the group and distributed and read prior to the AJS meeting. 2006 will be the sixth year of a formal meeting within which we have exchanged ideas and shared our work with peers in a casual, constructive environment. This Works in Progress Group is open to all scholars working in any discipline within the field of modern Jewish studies. We are a diverse group of scholars committed to engaging others and their works in order to further our own projects, those of our colleagues, and the critical growth of modern Jewish studies. It grew out of my perception that most new members of the congregation knew little, if anything, of the history and governance of the Conservative Movement, and had virtually no context or framework within which to understand the Movement‘s current positions on such sensitive issues as the role of gay and lesbian Jews and intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews. -

Resolution to Form UNITY (Unaffiliated Independent Temple Youth) In NFTY Chicago Area Region Submitted to the NFTY CAR Regional Board Winter Kallah 5777 December 17th, 2016 Background: The North American Federation of Temple Youth, or NFTY, founded in 1939, currently has nineteen regions formed by over 800 TYGs, or Temple Youth Groups. ● In 1939 NFTY was founded as part of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), now the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). ● In the past, TYG’s have been groups of teens from a synagogue and NFTY has served as the regional conglomerate of these entities. ● During an asefah, or plenary meeting, or during regional events, members of TYG’s vote on legislation and elect regional board members as a voting block allocated a certain number of votes based on representation. ● In recent years, as NFTY has expanded to include all Jewish youth who want a Reform Jewish experience, there has been an increase in the number of unaffiliated youth who do not receives these voting options and all privileges that may result from representation, because their families do not formally affiliate with a youth group or reform synagogue for a multitude of rationales. WHEREAS, The Preamble of the NFTY-CAR Constitution outlines the principles of the North American Federation of Temple Youth; and WHEREAS, The Preamble of the NFTY-CAR Constitution states that one of these purposes is “the need for k’hilah as a binding force for all Jews”; and WHEREAS, Article 2 of the NFTY-CAR Constitution outlines the purposes of this -

33¢, INTRODUCING SIDDUR LEV CHADASH Charles H Middleburgh on behalf of John D Rayner On this momentous day in our movement’s history I stand here to perform a function that all of us would have liked John Rayner to have been able to carry out. John is recovering well from his heart surgery and we send him our sincere good wishes for a refitah sh ’lemah, a speedy return to full health and vigour. In his unavoidable absence, and based almost totally on the text he would have delivered to you all, it therefore gives me great pleasure(although the phrase has rarely seemed less adequate) to present to this conference, and to the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues, the long-awaited Siddur Lev Chadash. I do so on behalf of the Editorial Committee and all who have been involved in the compilation and production of the book. It has been said that objectivity is a fine quality that each of us should develop, and I dare say that there are many who would approach the presentation of Siddur Lev Chadash with far greater objectivity than do I; my excuse then for being here, in spite of my irrcdeemably subjective approach to my present task is that I do, at least, have the advantage of - knowing the new book rather well just as a parent knows its child; r‘ if. except, of course, that this particular child is biologically unusual in that its gestation has taken several years, and that it has a plurality of COLLEG mothers and fathers, otherwise known as the Editorial Committee. -

A LEVEL RELIGIOUS STUDIES JUDAISM Scheme of Learning The principal aim of the Scheme of Learning is to support teachers in the delivery of the new WJEC A2 Religious Studies specification. It is not intended as a comprehensive reference, but as support for professional teachers to develop stimulating and exciting courses tailored to the needs and skills of their own students in their particular centres. In addition, this document must not be used instead of the specification, but must be used to support the delivery of it. It offers assistance to teachers with regard to possible classroom activities, links to digital resources (both our own, freely available, digital materials and some from external sources), text books and other resources, to provide ideas when planning interesting, topical and engaging lessons. The intention of this scheme of work is that learners will participate in some independent learning tasks prior to attendance at the lesson. In this way, learners should arrive at the lesson with questions concerning areas that they do not understand, and there is more time for analysis and evaluation of the material within the lesson time. For those who do not wish to take this approach, the activity suggestions should still be flexible enough to be adapted. There are no absolutes goodnight tight here with “shoulds” and “shouldn’ts.” Create a bedtime ritual that suits you and your child. Bring the memories of your own childhood bedtime ritual into the present to flavor your choices. The Shema can be the first prayer said by a child. And by teaching it to your child, you will be linking your family into a chain of tradition that stretches back two thousand years to Talmudic times. If you see yourself in a relationship with God who is in heaven and directs the world, the Shema affirms that there is only one God that we all worship. If you prefer a more mystical understanding and imagine God as not only present in the universe but that the universe is a manifestation of God, then the Shema affirms God’s unity with all creation. Some people tend to think that Jews in the past thought and did Rituals give a comforting shape to a child’s day. They offer a child a sense everything the same “orthodox” way, but Judaism has always been a of stability and security that provide a gentle transition to sleep.
