Sand dollars, clamshells too, some are purple, some are blue And they’re lying all over the sand. Then I pick them up and put them in my cup Treasures for kids like you and me! Next I’ll look for more at the ocean’s shore Those seashells all over the sand. LET’S GO TO THE BEACH (to tune of “A-Hunting We will Go”) Let's go to the beach To swim and play and run. Building castles in the sand Is ever so much fun. We'll fix a picnic lunch And eat it when we like. And when we all are nice and full We'll take a nature hike. Be sure to wear your suit And bring along your float. We'll ride so far out in the surf Pretending it's a boat. We'll find some pretty shells And throw the gulls some bread. Put on a lot of suntan oil So that we don't turn red. We'll never want to leave. Such fun this all has been. But we'll come back another day And do it all again! DOWN BY THE SEASHORE (to tune of "Down by the station") Down by the seashore, early in the morning See the little children, ready for some fun See the happy grown-ups, spreading out the blankets Watch the little children, to the shore they run. Splashing in the water, digging in the sand Splash, splash, dig, dig, the seashore is such fun! 4 MR. LOBSTER & MRS. CRAB (to tune of “Old MacDonald”) Mr. Lobster and Mrs. Crab Pinch and snap all day. Mr. Lobster and Mrs. Crab Pinch and snap all day. With a pinch pinch here and a snap, snap there. Here a pinch, There a snap, Everywhere a pinch, snap. Mr. Lobster and Mrs. Crab Pinch and snap all day. DEEP BLUE SEA (to tune of “Wheels on the Bus”) I’m goin’ fishin’ in the deep blue sea, the deep blue sea, the deep blue sea. I’m goin’ fishin’ in the deep blue sea. Wanna go fishin’ with me? We’re ridin’ in a boat on the deep blue sea… We’re castin’ our line in the deep blue sea… We’re bringin’ home the fish from the deep blue sea…wanna’ have dinner with me? OCTOPUS SONG – (to tune of "Three Blind Mice") Octopus, Octopus In the Sea, In the Sea To swim they use all 8 of their arms Their color changes to hide them from harm They live in the sea, not on a farm The Octopus DO YOU SEE (to tune of “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”) Do you see a jellyfish, A Jellyfish, a jellyfish Do you see a jellyfish A-swimming in the sea? Do you see a sea turtle… Do you see an octopus… Do you see a tiger shark… Do you see a sea urchin… WE'RE GOING TO THE BEACH (to tune of "The Farmer in the Dell") 5 We're going to the beach, We're going to the beach. High-ho, the dairy-o, We're going to the beach (add other verses) We're going to find some shells... We're going to splash and swim... AT THE BEACH (to tune of “Frere Jacques”) Make a sand cake, make a castle In the sand, in the sand. Pouring, measuring, digging, Pouring, measuring, digging Just feels grand, just feels grand. Sand is gritty, sand is gritty, At the beach, at the beach. Sand is many tiny rocks Broken down from bigger rocks, At the beach, at the beach. DOWN UNDER THE SEA (to tune of “Home on the Range”) Down under the sea, Where the dolphins swim free, And the sand and the sea grasses sway, Where the starfish shine bright, And the dogfish don't bite, I ride my seahorse all day. (chorus) Down under the sea, Where the whales sing and dive deep, We chase and rope sharks, Until it gets dark, When the waves gently rock us to sleep. Down under the sea, My seahorse takes me, On a ride through coral and caves. We round up fish there, Rescue mermaids so fair, My seahorse and I are quite brave! OTHER FUN STUFF 6 SHELL MATCHUP Find several pairs of different types of shells. Place the shells in a clear container, such as a plastic food container of glass bowl. Let children take turns sorting through the shells, finding those that match, and setting the pairs out on a table. CRAB WALK Sit on the floor. Place hands behind you. Bend knees and keep your feet flat on the floor. Now lift your bottom off the floor, Try to keep your stomach flat. Crabs mostly move sideways, but they can also move forward and backward. OCTOPUS Materials: 1 pillowcase, 4 pairs of pantyhose, felt, newspaper, yarn 1. Cut eyes and mouth from felt and sew to pillowcase.

Franco I have seen wicked men and fools, a great many of both; and I believe they both get paid in the end; but the fools first. — Kidnapped The above statement closes David Balfour’s ordeal on the islet of Earraid and offers the reader a choice dose of the wisdom and philosophy of Kidnapped ’s author, Robert Louis Stevenson. The statement also conveys the underlying theme of a unit that attempts to examine the work of master storyteller Stevenson. Central to this survey is the concept of that rogue bandit, the pirate, who Stevenson immortalized through his characterization of Long John Silver. Equally important is the notion of treasure, both material and philosophical. The impetus for this effort is derived from an increasingly narrowed middle school English curriculum which advocates the reading of literature, and novels in particular, as a secondary line of study. This back seat relegation serves two major purposes in the English classroom: the compilation of cumulative book report records and a source for multicolored checklists that are hung in just about every middle school English classroom except my own. Clearly, the appreciation of novels and the exploration of critical themes inherent within such works by students prior to entering high school can only serve to enhance the impact of curricular reading at the more advanced levels of education. The choice of an author and a sampling of his work over several authors and their work was not a particularly difficult decision to make.

PREFACE Since ever dwellers on the Continent were first able to navigate the ocean, the isles of Great Britain and Ireland must have been objects which excited their supreme interest. To this we owe in part the com- ing of our own early ancestors to these isles. But while we have histories which inform us of the several historic invasions, they all seem to me to belittle far too much the influence of the Norse Invasions in particular. This error I would fain correct, so far as regards Celtic Scotland.
