The Government of Guyana through the Scholarship Division of the Department of Public Service provides training awards Eligibility Requirement for ‘SCHEME B’ to all Guyanese at all levels for positions in the Public Service. This scheme caters for Guyanese who have been employed in the Public Service for a period of five (5) continuous years or more, Training awards are divided into two main categories. Training Classified as Duty The undermentioned types of training may be classified as “duty.” A trainee wishing to have his or her training be classified as ‘duty’ must seek the approval of the Permanent Secretary within the Department of Public Service prior to the beginning of the programme. The following are intended to give trainees an opportunity to meet their peers or counterparts from other countries or agencies for the purpose of exchanging views and ideas on current developments relevant to his or her particular designation: a) Practical Attachment b) Workshop c) Symposium d) Training Conference e) Observation Tour f) Short Course not exceeding twelve weeks

The aforementioned training assignments may be part of an extended formal training programme at a higher education learning institution. Hence, these types of training are intended to equip trainees with knowledge to function at a higher level of efficiency in his or her present job or in a position of higher responsibility in the future.

However, once the visa application has been successful, the candidate will be refunded the monies paid as part of their training package. This is usually done at the time of the payment of tuition.

A valid passport is a requirement for the granting of a training award for overseas and local study. The passport of all training awardees will bear the following endorsement: “The Bearer is contractually obligated to the Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Relating to His/Her Training Education.” You are required to uplift a document verifying your award from the Training Division. This document should then be presented along with your passport to the Immigration Officer in order to have the necessary endorsement. This endorsement is checked at the Immigration Desk at all International Ports of entry and exits at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

In addition to the official endorsement of the passport, training awardees should note the following: 1. The Training Division of the Department of Public Service should be informed of any other passport or travel document held in addition to the ‘endorsed passport’.
