WITHERN, a good vi!lage on the Louth road, 5 miles N. by W ~ of Alford, has in its parish 503 inhabitants and 2669 acres of land, including 253 acres in the hamlet of Stain or Stane, which is 3! miles N.E. of Withern, and pays tithes to St. Mary,. and had anciently a church, which was a rectory, valued in K.B. at .£5. 6s. ld., but has now only a few cottages. Withern was formerly a seat of the Fitzwilliams, who had another mansion at Mablethorpe,. as noticed at page 505. A large square-moated area, called the Oastle Hill, is still pointed out as the site of their residence here, though it is more probably the remains of a Danish encampment~ Robert Vyner, Esq., is now lord of the manor and patron of the Ohurch (St. Margaret), which was rebuilt in 1812, at the cost of .£1400, and is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £18. 10s. 2fd., and now worth upwards of £500, having 48A. of glebe, and a yearly rent charge of £484. 2s. ld., awarded in lieu of tithes at the enclosure of the open fields, (600A.) in 1838. The Rev. Wm. P. Vyner is the in cumbent and has a good residence. The Wesleyan chapel here was · rebuilt about 45 years ago. Richard Stovin Maw, Esq., the Rev. Dr. Parkinson, and several smaller proprietors have estates in the parish. In 1710, the Rev. Wm. Jones left .£50 for the education of poor children of Withern, and it was laid out in the purchase of 4A. 29P. of land, now let for £6 a year. The interest of £100, left by George Stovin, in 1726, and now vested with Richard Stovin Maw,. Esq., is applied with the funds of the school, which was rebuilt in 1850, at the cost of £350, on a site given by Rt. Vyner, Esq. PosT OFFICE at Rebecca Desforges'.
