SECRETARY’S REPORT

My first year back on the committee after resigning as President in 2005.

Technology has once again played a large part in the Association this year with the introduction of Electronic Match Sheets (EMS). The Association Staff worked hard in the pre-season trialling the system before it came into operation. The system alleviates a lot of issues in regard to borrowing of players and it also assisted the Judiciary as suspensions were automatically recorded into the electronic match system. It also alleviated a significant amount of leg work for Club volunteers.

The weather was kind to us this Season with very few games cancelled/re-scheduled due to wet weather. Synthetic pitches have also been the Association’s saviour, with the installation of more of these pitches it will help with the re-scheduling of games, which may have previously been washed out on the week end. A big thank you to Council for their continued support in installing these pitches.

The increased use of Cromer Park for grassroots clubs and players remains a focus of the MWFA with the launch of the Men’s Premier League Match of the Round and a new initiative to offer Cromer Park No 1 and No 2 to clubs when available.

On top of the continued commitment to play local competition matches every Saturday and Sunday when there is a vacancy on Cromer Park No. 1 and No. 2, it is truly a facility for the entire 18,700 football players on the .

We are truly blessed to have the best football facility in NSW, which was in full glory when the MWFA hosted it’s three Grand Final days at Cromer Park where every single MWFA Grand Final takes place in the one venue, another luxury we should never take for granted.

Congratulations to Wakehurst Football Club for winning the Men’s and Women’s Premier League double with Wakehurst defeating CC Strikers in the men’s Competition and Manly Vale in the women’s decider.

The Women’s Premier League was the tightest competition in years and we continue to work towards building depth across the Clubs to drive towards establishing a First and Reserve grade competition.

Congratulations also to Curl Curl Youth Club and Mosman for winning the respective AL1 competitions and Brookvale and Manly Vale for taking out the MWFA Challenge Finals.

While 2018 was a year of growth and success, we continue to have challenges on and off the park and the biggest challenge facing football on the Northern Beaches is the behaviour of spectators, parents, coaches and players at matches.

This will see the MWFA bring to life its General Purposes Tribunal (GPT) in 2019 to deal with issues that involve non- participants. In 2018 some teams were penalized Team Discipline Points due to the actions of spectators and parents and this will continue in 2019.

I would also like to thank David Mason CEO and the staff at the MWFA for the work they put in all year Lee-Anne Sestanovich, Karon Saunders, Angela Crandell, Christopher Adams. Thank you to the Manly United staff Warren Grieve, Andrew Christiansen and Jordan Lefebvre.

Thank you to the members of the Executive and Management Committees and the Sub-Committees.

.

Linda Ward Secretary

TREASURER’S REPORT

I am pleased to advise that the MWFA has reported an operating profit before development levy revenue and grants of $92,292 for the year ended 30 September 2018 ($94,157 for year ended 30 September 2017). In 2018, an additional $145,980 was collected for the facility and sportsfield development fund as compared to $114,437 in 2017. This represented a result that was over $310,000 better than the combined budgeted net profit for the MWFA.

The key points to note in this year’s results are:-

- Revenue grew by 3.8% in 2016 mainly as a result of increased registration fees collected as player numbers increased to 18,029. - The vast majority of the increased revenue was offset by increased cost for referees, FFA, FNSW, Sporting Field Levies as well the increased employee costs associated with the employment of the Community Coach Co-ordinator this year. - There were no other significant movements in any other expense accounts. No adjustments have been made to 2016 figures. 2017 operating expense costs other than employee costs were generally in line with the budgeted expenditure for the year. - At the operating profit level, the MWFA was over $170,000 better than budget due to a combined of higher income due to actual registered players of 18,029 vs a budget of 17,349. On the expenditure side, we were under budget due:- - Over accrued expenses in 2017 - Costs budgeted for legal, computer and consultants that have been deferred to 2019 - Lower than budgeted wages and advertising costs

- This year, the MWFA has assisted with development funding grants approved to improve lighting at Dee Why Oval for Dee Why Football Club and repairs to the Cromer Park grandstand roof. Work was also completed Cromer Park scoreboard and training cage that was fully funded by grants received from various government entities. - As at 30 September 2017, there is $727,246 held in the facility and sportsfield development fund.

Net Asset Position and Budgets

The MWFA’s net asset position has improved as a result of the improved trading result. The MWFA has continued to improve its budgeting approach to ensure greater transparency and awareness of the costs to run football in the MWFA.

Given the extensive capital works that Northern Beaches Council have been undertaking on our playing fields, we have been reviewing and fine-tuning our strategic goals that will set the parameters for future budgets and use of the development levies previously collected.

Other Matters

We have received the draft audit closing letter from John Watson of Watson Corporate Service and he has not identified any significant matters to be addressed. There are some minor process improvements that we will implement in the near future.

Lastly, I would like to thank David Mason and Derek Turner for their efforts and support over the past year.

Joseph Sorbara Treasurer

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT - REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL REPORT

Manly United has again performed well in representing Manly Warringah Football Association in the NSW Premier League. The achievements have been well documented on our web site and in the media but it would be remiss of me not to mention the women’s part of the club who have excelled again with nearly all teams making the semi-finals and picking up Senior Coach of the year again and several player awards also.

It is also pleasing to point out the success of the MWFA Association Youth League Teams who have done the club and the association proud.

We are fortunate in having a dedicated band of coaches at MUFC, their hard work is appreciated by the club and players alike. The women’s side of the club is ably led by Sharon Egger, and the men’s side of the club by Technical Director Andrew Christiansen.

The board would like to thank the MWFA clubs for their support in sending their talented players down to the trials and for the support on match days. We have expanding the SAP to two squads and the MWFA representative youth teams in the13 to 16 age groups also which gives a greater number of players the chance to receive the coaching and experience the elite level of football.

Our sponsors are a vital part of the club and I would like to again thank them for their continued support, especially our major sponsor MWFA. It is important that we support the various sponsors we have, if you can use any of the companies who sponsor the club, it would go a long way to ensuring their continued support.

Our thanks go to the following businesses: Bendigo Bank Freshwater Branch, Brown Bros Skip Bins, Lion Sports Travel, DYRSL, Umbro, Roasted Empire, Plateau Quality Meats, JD Trophies, Watson Corporate Services, Morabito Legal, Optimal Care Chiropractic, Advanced Weather Proofing, JB Metropolitan, Hollydene Estate, CMS Surveyors, Bluedog Signs, St Augustines and Premier Automotive.

Thanks to the office staff for their help and support during the season,

Keith Pester MWFA Snr. Vice President (Reps) On behalf of the board; Ray Fanning (Chairman) Keith Pester Jeff Smit Frank Chidiac Chris Hale Ken Hutton Ian Clarke Brian Meinrath (resigned mid-season) Nick Tomaino David Mason (CEO)

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT - ASSOCIATION REPORT

With another season complete in my first year as Vice President, I look back over the last 11 months and take a good look at what we have achieved as an association. Firstly I’d like to thank Dave Wilson who I have taken over from for all his assistance and advice, A wealth of experience and always a phone call away.

I’d like to also thank the other members of the committee I have worked with this year. A team is only as good as the people in it and I think we are well led by Jeff Smit and our CEO Dave Mason. I would also like to thank the office team who we could not do without and who run a tight ship.

I want to also make mention of all the clubs and thank them all for all the positive interactions.

It’s not easy running a football club and I think you all do a tremendous job.

I’d like to say what a pleasure it’s been working on the defibrillator project with the Defibrillator team. The council have now installed public access defibrillators across the Northern Beaches and so everyone will have access to them, a great initiative of which I am extremely proud to have been part of.

Grand final days were well represented by all clubs with Wakehurst being the PL Grand final winners in what was a superb match.

MWFA presentation night was a huge success with HUNCH running the night and was very well received. Certainly a fun night!

The MWFA entered teams in 4 age groups into the boys FNSW Association Youth League with good success unearthing some fantastic new talent and a trip overseas. A great second tier representative competition.

Cromer 2 was completed with synthetic grass and was used in the semi-final and grand final weekends with lots of positive feedback.

Friday nights at Cromer were a big hit with the Premier League competition.

I am also a member of the Northern Beaches Football Council and are slowly forging a future that we can all be proud of. I would like to thank the other members of that committee and I certainly look forward to working with you on a continuous basis.

I am also the Welfare Manager for the MWFA a newly created position, and with a Welfare Officer from each club we hope to be there for all members should the need arise .

Thank you all again for the 2018 season and I look forward to catching up again with you all

VICE PRESIDENT – SENIORS

It has been my privilege to be in the role of Vice President Seniors in 2018 for a second year. Having been a player, referee and administrator across PL, AL, O35 and O45 over the past 18 years I feel well equipped to assist with the association side of things.

The 2018 season was another interesting and eventful year on the Men’s side of the game. The Premier League was a very close competition with PITTWATER RSL taking out the championship on goal difference from BROOKVALE. Retaining the championship in consecutive years is always challenging so our congratulations to them on seeing it through in a nail-biting finish that went down to the last week of the season.

The semi-finals saw third and fourth place WAKEHURST and CC STRIKERS have upset wins. They then put on a thrilling Grand Final with WAKEHURST looking all but gone at 2-0 down with only 8 minutes remaining until they clawed their way back to equalise and then take out the penalty shoot out to record a memorable win.

In the AL1’s CURL CURL having been denied promotion in 2017 added discipline to their performance and again won the championship with a 10-point gap over BTH who they also defeated in the Grand Final. Curl Curl also took out the double in the AL1 Res. In the final of the MWFA Cup this year BROOKVALE produced a miracle escape fighting back from two goals down to beat CC STRIKERS 3-2 in the final of the MWFA Challenge Cup.

In the 18/1 competition St AUGUSTINES also had a second consecutive championship but this year with only a two- point gap over 2nd place PITTWATER. However, in the grand Final they missed out on the double by going down 3-1 to FOREST KILLARNEY. The O35/1 championship was again won by Wakehurst however second placed MOSMAN took out the Grand Final on penalties in a thrilling final. The O45/1 was a very close affair with MOSMAN and BROOKVALE being separated by a single point in MOSMANS favour. The same teams fought out a close Grand Final with MOSMAN winning 2-1.

The AL’s this year again had single teams in Divisions 3-8 and they all coped well with the introduction of the new Electronic Match Sheets. The O/35 competition had 6 divisions and the O/45’s had 3 divisions, more growth is anticipated in this comp over the coming years as the aging population show no sign of wanting to stop playing. Other changes this year saw the introduction of a Friday night PL game at Cromer Park, the new synthetic pitch at Cromer 2 and the successful introduction of a 10-minute Sin-Bin for a yellow card dissent trialled in Under 18/1 and MWFA Cup competitions.

Pittwater (PL), Wakehurst (O35s), Mosman (O45s) and St Augustines (U18s) represented the MWFA with pride in the 2018 Champion of Champion series for a second year.

Towards the end of the season the football community was shocked by the serious spinal injury that Curl Curl Over 35 player Richard Tombs sustained. MWFA continues to work with his family, friends and Curl Curl Youth Club to assist in any way possible. MWFA also provided specific support for Richard’s team mates and their opponents on the day, Wakehurst. The outpouring of concern and support from the MWFA football family has been tremendous and shows the camaraderie that exists within the game on the Northern Beaches.

The MWFA once again fielded a PL select team that played and won a close game against NSFA and then lost against Manly United. The squad was co coached by the 2017 Mens Premier League coaches of the year Ryan Butcher from CC Strikers and Adam Israel from Pittwater RSLFC.

This year’s Presentation Night was again a joint Men’s and Women’s event. We had another successful night at the Novotel, Manly Pacific with 350 in attendance. A special thank you must go to one of our sponsors Bendigo Bank, Freshwater Branch for their continued support in presenting the awards. It would be remiss not to mention the work that Dave Mason, Lee-Anne Sestanovich, Angela Crandell and Karon Saunders from the office put into making the night a huge hit. The photographs supplied throughout the year by Graeme Bolton and Michael Hennessey add a great deal to the night.

46 | P a g e

The Mens’ winners were as follows:

• Player of the Year PL Luke Curnow (CCS) AL 1 Ben Sheppard (HSU) • Coach of the Year PL –Joshua Asycough (Mosman) AL1 Paul Mulligan (HSU) • Golden Boot PL Sipan Berti (Narrabeen) AL1 Tyson Masters (Curl Curl) • Goalkeeper of the Year PL Matthew Smith (CCS) AL1 Joint Winners Bryan Howell (Manly Allambie) Robert Fleming (BTH) • Rookie of the Year Jack Worland (HSU) • Clubman of the Year Dean McCreath (Pittwater) • RON SAVELL (MPL BEST & FAIREST) CC Strikers TRENT PATTON (AL1 BEST & FAIREST) HSU

Finally, many thanks to all the MWFA committees and sub committees for their efforts during the season. We had a forum for Men’s PL, AL 1 coaches and officials along with members of the MWFRA to discuss a range of issues. Defibrillators coverage across all our senior games this year has continued to be good.

I hope you all enjoy a break in the off season, have a great festive season and look forward to seeing you all back next year.

VICE PRESIDENT – YOUTH

The participation numbers in our local youth ages (U12 thru U16) showed a small increase of over last season, rising from 2,613 to 2,634 players and the number of teams growing from 178 to 180. St Augustine’s continues to be comfortably the largest youth-age club in our Association.

The MWFA had good levels of participation in this year’s State Cup. The U13 Forest Killarney team reached the quarter-finals and in what I believe is a first for our association, we had two teams, CC Strikers and Wakehurst, play out the final of the U16’s. Well done to both teams and special congratulations to CC Strikers who prevailed on the day, backing up their runners-up finish in last year’s final of Champion of Champions.

Our local grand-final day is a notable day on the footballing calendar as it signals the end of the local football season and in doing so, affords all competing teams the opportunity to have their family and friends come to support them on what is a rather special and memorable occasion. This year saw the reintroduction of the penalty shootout as a means to determine the winner in the event of a drawn game. Love them or hate them, there’s nothing quite like a penalty shootout to draw a crowd, as evidenced by the only shootout on the day between CC Strikers and Wakehurst in the U14-1 final.

In the FNSW Champion of Champions, teams from our association couldn’t back up the outstanding results from last year but performed credibly nonetheless. What the boys couldn’t do this year the girls made up for with the Manly Vale W-U12’s, Wakehurst W-U15’s and the Avalon W-U16’s all competing in the finals. What a great performance by the Avalon girls to take out the final.

This was the MWFA’s first year having teams competing in the FNSW Association Youth League (AYL) and the results were very promising. Our U13’s, U14’s, and U16’s all finished in the top four of their respective competitions with those three teams also reaching the preliminary finals.

I’d like to take the opportunity here to publicly acknowledge David Mason who took on the role of MWFA General Manager late last year. While David has done a great job already with the duties you would expect of a general manager, it was his handling of the serious injury to Richard Tombs this year that, for me, made him stand out. He handled the incident in an incredibly professional manner and in such a way that his humanity shone forth. We are all thankful to you.

Looking back over the 2018 season, it has been successful on many fronts and I would like to extend my thanks to coaches, managers, referees, club officials, parents, and supporters for playing your part in providing our youngsters the opportunity to participate in the wonderful game of football. I look forward to seeing you again next year.

MWFA VICE-PRESIDENT – JUNIORS

(A) MWFA Football in General In this Year 2018 MWFA Annual Report I sincerely thank the many members of the MWFA Football Community (supporters and officials) for the co-operation afforded to me as V-P - Junior Football (ALDI MiniRoos Ages 5-11) and V-P - Football (FNSW) Tournaments. Amongst the many, I must mention our President, Mr Jeff Smit, who in a few short years, as President, has pursued the development of Football in our area. Next, thanks to the Executive Committee (EC), my fellow Management Committee (MC) members and our top Office Staff Team. The last mentioned were co-ordinated by David Mason, our CEO, with Lee--Anne Sestanovich, Karon Saunders and Angela Crandell. We have run a ‘tight ship’ with over 18 000 participants. Also my thanks spread to Sigrid Mulherin, Manly Warringah Football Referees Association Administration Officer, for her liaison with me to provide referees each Sunday of the FNSW Tournament rounds (see below), as held in the MWFA area and during other related occasions. Last but not least I am most grateful for the work Christopher Adams, our Community Coach Development Manager (CCDM), has enacted this year and last. From small beginnings in 2017 to 2018 where coaching and development in the Junior levels has gone ahead in leaps and bounds. To this list I conclude by adding Club Delegates and Committees who have assisted Christopher and me developing the Juniors of ages 5 to 11. Five-year olds do play in our Under 6 bracket so these need our greatest assistance in coaching. As well Life Members, in both Club and Association ranks, I must praise for taking a keen interest in the Football matters throughout 2018 and I feel assured these valued people will continue into 2019.

(B) MWFA Junior Football Ages Under 6 to 11 (and even from U.5 age) I thank Club members with U.6-11 teams, especially those who learned the Grassroots Football Rules for the so-named ‘ALDI MiniRoos Football’. In 2018 we saw thousands of players in these playing-groups and we continued to develop a seamless transfer to the U.12’s where the full team of 11 players and ‘the full gamut’ of FIFA Laws applied. Christopher and I conducted successful ‘MiniRoos’ Courses in the early months of 2018, where I spent the first 10-15 of the 90 minute session outlining the ‘ALDI MiniRoos Playing Formats and Rules’ documentation. Then, Christopher assisted the members in the Courses to understand how to put it all into practice. Over 400 people became more proficient in ‘Rules and Formats’ in practical ways. These were generally our ‘referees’ which in our level are called ‘Game Leaders’. After these sessions many Club members and others attended Christopher’s Grassroots Coaching Courses (as I do each year) to become ‘Coaches/Managers (called ‘Team Leaders’). This new parlance was used and we saw great development in the ages U.5 - 11. Where there were problems notified to me (at ‘[email protected]). I attended Club matches to see if problems may be occurring. Thanks to all who reported perceived problems and we managed to solve matters in most cases. Previously I stated there were over 400 on our courses but Christopher and I will not be satisfied till we have well over that number understanding the procedures quite thoroughly and our players have fun times as they learn.

(C) Football State Cups Tournament Now I must outline the campaigns, early in season 2018, of volunteering Club teams who contested what is generally called the ‘FNSW State Cup Tournament’ (the named State Cups are the Frank Broughton, Robertson, Bill Cullinan and Cheryl Salisbury Cups together with those simply denoted as State Cups). Our MWFA Club teams challenged teams from all over NSW. The results, shown elsewhere in this Annual Report, portray the tireless efforts of players and officials through May to July. There were two Boys 16 teams through to the Final, Wakehurst FC and Collaroy Cromer FC, who had to play each another, with Strikers proving victorious 4 to nil. Both teams worked strongly through all weeks. In the Final we congratulated both teams plus officials.

(D) FNSW Champion-of-Champions Tournament Our Club Division 1 teams, that won the ‘MWFA League Championships’ at the end of the season 2018, represented the MWFA against other NSW Associations. 16 MWFA teams contested Round 2, as Round 1 saw all 16 with byes. After many weeks, 4 Finalists attended FNSW HQ, Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood, on Sunday, 21st October: Manly Vale FC 12 Girls, Wakehurst FC 15 Girls’, Avalon SC 16 Girls and Wakehurst Over 30 Women. All teams performed strongly: MVFC 12 Girls just losing 0 to 2 to Lindfield FC; WFC 15 Girls beaten by a ‘hot’ Earlwood Warriors FC, 0 to 5; Wakehurst O.30 worked tirelessly but just lost, 1 to 2; .Avalon Girls 16 proved victorious over a strong Mt Colah, 3-1. Great Finals’ day for all Club teams, specially the victor !!!! Thanks to all Club teams who took the challenges from Day 1. See results this Annual Report & FNSW website.

In conclusion, thanks again to all with whom I am associated in Football and I eagerly await Season 2019 when it all restarts with the MWFA. To Club Committees, players, officials and supporters, I hope you have an fine off-season and return refreshed to participate in ‘The World Game’. We’ll be back with ALDI MiniRoos Rules Sessions in March and I hope to arrange more sessions to cover more teams in these Ages-Grades of Football.

MWFA COACH DEVELOPMENT REPORT

As my second year being a part of the Northern Beaches Football Family draws to a close it is with great satisfaction and pleasure that I write this report that details the success that we have seen across coach development in the Manly Warringah Football Community

All of our coaches desire different levels of coach education and support. My goal has been aligned with Football Federation Australia’s goal of making coach education flexible, accessible, inclusive and recognized (FAIR) . The largest percentage of our coaches here on the Northern Beaches are the “Football Helpers” these are often the last person to stand back when a coach is called upon to run a team. We have prided ourselves here at the MWFA on taking coach development to these Football Helpers in their own club through different methods outlined below. Formal coaching courses are only a mere fragment of the coach development that we offer our members.

MWFA again committed to increasing the amount of female coaches over the next 3 years to 20% and this year again ran the Female Coaching Scholarship which saw Imogen Carlisle (Avalon SC) and Jayne Lillycrop (Pittwater RSL FC) receive the scholarship to attend their C Licence Course. This Last years winners Lyndal Caruthers (Avalon) and Cerise Brooks (Mosman) completed and then achieved their C Licence accreditation and it has been a pleasure to see the impact that they are starting to have at their respective clubs.

The year started off with a bang with the relaunched MWFA Community Coaching Expo. In consultation with Warren Grieve the then MUFC Technical Director the decision was taken year to relaunch the expo whereby community coaches of all levels were provided options to learn and network before the start of the MWFA community season. 269 coaches registered for the evening however wet weather saw this number turn to 148 coaches attend on the evening which was a terrific start to the year on a wet and wild evening.

The evening saw all coaches also receive crucial information in regards to a “Football First Aid” workshop with Duncan Kerr around defibrillator training as all MWFA grounds now have a defibrillator present. Coaches then broke off into a workshop of their choice (MiniRoos, SAP, GTP/Senior and Goalkeeping). The highlight of the evening saw coaches then came inside for a Q&A panel with from Sydney FC.

Coaching courses were held across the peninsular ranging from ALDI MiniRoos coaching courses to the FFA Game Training Certificate. This year saw the MWFA Pilot a flexible 14 hour program for these courses which saw coaches complete a one day section of the course with an instructor and then complete the course via support from their club CCC and completing self-reflections. The feedback from coaches for this approach has been extremely positive and after consulting with Les Bee the National Community Coach Development Manager we will again be offering this service to our members. I must praise my team of instructors Al Ellis and Richard Lacey for their time and effort assisting me with coach education courses in 2018. This year also saw James Webb, Suraj Pillai and Nick Robb complete their training to become community course instructors and all of them will play a key role moving into 2019.

We continued with our centralised coaching workshops held at Cromer Park throughout the season. This year we conducted 3 workshops which saw 140 coaches attend. This year we continued our good relationship with FFA and had National Goalkeeper Development Manager Dean May facilaite our first workshop themed around including your goalkeeper within your training sessions. From the workshops we included local MWFA clubs players into the workshops and I would like to thank the clubs for releasing their players and the parents for bringing them along to Cromer Park.

2018 saw a relaunch of the ALDI MiniRoos Game Leader Workshops run by the MWFA for our ALDI MiniRoos parents. The 90 minute workshop this year was run practically targeting ALDI MiniRoos parents who pick up the whistle and become Game Leaders on a Saturday & Sunday throughout the year.

The Workshops brought the national playing rules and formats to life and gave the adults the opportunity to get the boots on and experience what it is like to play ALDI MiniRoos football at U6/U7 level and then U8 to U11 level.

Across the 5 workshops held across the Northern Beaches record numbers of 318 coaches attended. Thank you to all of the clubs that hosted these workshops and to Tony Davies for his time and effort throughout the whole process.

The Club Coach Coordinator (CCC) program came into its second year within the MWFA. The CCC program is a Football Federation Australia coach development program aimed at supporting new and inexperienced coaches in their

52 | P a g e

own club environment. The program has come to life across the peninsular with the 11 member clubs now involved in the pilot program. The CCC program is designed to help those new and inexperienced coaches via clubs taking ownership of coach development within their club and provide inter club development opportunities. The program isn’t a one size fits all program and all of the member clubs have supported their coaches in different ways be it through one to one mentoring from an experienced coach, or through the several inter club workshops run in conjunction with myself and the MWFA.

It was great this year to see CCC’s running their own workshops themselves and begin the steps to become coach developers to further grow our pool here on the Beaches. The highlight of the year was once again for the CCC program was the visits of Les Bee from Football Federation Australia. Les is the National Community Coach Development Manager and is the architect behind the CCC program. Les came to Cromer Park on several occasions now to help facilitate training workshops for our CCC’s as well as helping to facilaite an Intra- Association workshop here at Cromer Park with our neighbours NSFA and their CCC’s.

The year will again finish off with the FFA/AFC C licence coaching course at Cromer Park in October where 40 coaches will gain their C Licence accreditation.

Overall 2018 has been a very successful year for coach development and we have built on the foundations laid in 2017. This has been testament to the people involved across the football family looking to support and develop coaches.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome incoming TD for Manly United Andrew Christiansen I am looking forward to working alongside Andrew here at Cromer Park in 2019. Also it is important to recognise the contribution that Warren Grieve made to the area both on and off the field, personally Warren helped to develop myself as coach developer and was a constant sounding board for all of the programs mentioned above. It is great to still see Warren involved with Football NSW and I know he will by flying the flag for supporting coaches both at the grassroots association level and the pointy end of elite football.

See you all in 2019.

MANLY UNITED FC – TECHNICAL DIRECTOR MENS FOOTBALL

2018 has been another fantastic year for Manly United and the MWFA with the introduction of the AYL program, a new synthetic pitch on Cromer 2 and “the warm up cage” being resurfaced. We are proud to have an extremely professional and diligent player welfare program lead by Steve Felsher, and have recently added Joseph Fox as our Head of SAP to ensure the players get the best possible football environment.

We’re extremely fortunate to have an excellent group of experienced, qualified and knowledgeable coaches that continue to develop and give their all for the players, many of who started their passion for coaching at MWFA Clubs. Manly Utd FC continue to lead the way in all aspects of football and I’m looking forward to continuing that progress.

Our commitment to football within the MWFA is to provide our most talented players from Development squads to 1st grade, men and women, an opportunity to be the best player they can be. We aim to provide a professional football environment where everyone involved enjoys their experience, trains and plays in a competitive environment and ultimately develop as people and players.

I would like to congratulate and welcome the new players to our SAP, DEV, AYL and BYL programs. I look forward to working with an extremely talented group of players. Congratulations to all MWFA clubs that have helped these players develop and gain selection into the MUFC program.

Skill Acquisition Program

This year was the 2nd year the of our second SAP licence which ensured more of our talented young players were exposed to a full time training environment. The 2018 program catered for a total of 250 players between the ages of 9 to 12, in our SAP and Development squad program. From this year’s under 12’s squad, five players were selected for Hyundai A-League academies Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.

Our 11’s were given a fantastic opportunity to travel to Germany in May for an invitational tournament in Bremen. They played against some top European teams including Arsenal, Schalke 04, Hertha Berlin, Fulham, Tottenham and others. They also played friendly games against Wolfsburg, Viktoria Plzen, FC Porto, Bayern Munich, and RB Leipzig.

Association Youth League

The introduction of the Association Youth League in 2018 provides an important next step in a more comprehensive pathway for talented football players, bridging the gap between Association clubs and our MUFC program. The program provides more opportunity for our elite players on the Northern beaches. It has been an outstanding year for all four teams, the by-product of playing great football resulted in three teams making the finals series, only just missing the grand final.

A combined squad of 15’s/16’s players took part in the Albim Cup in Germany where we played against Hertha Berlin, Dynamo Dresden, Hertha Zehlendorf, Sigma Olomouc, Slovak Liberec, AS Trencin, and FK Teplice. In preparation for the tournament the squad also played friendly games against Salvia Prague, Bayern Hof and Union Berlin.

After a successful 2018 season, Manly United Football Club and the Manly Warringah Football Association is proud to have three players have progress from the Association Youth League teams in 2018 to the Manly United Boys Youth League for 2019.

Eric Siqueira (U14s), Jedh Curtis (U15s), and Lucas van de Scheur (U16s) have all been selected in the Manly United teams for 2019 after stand out performances in the AYL in 2018. The elevation of the trio is another positive endorsement of the MWFA’s decision to enter teams into the Football NSW Association Youth League in 2018.

54 | P a g e

Boys Youth League

The players aged 13-16 are required to take the next step in their football development and apply their individual skill to the team setting; meaning these four years of development test the players technically, tactically, physically, and mentally. Establishing a proactive brand of football, “the Manly way” saw each side play with no fear of failure. Where results are not the be all and end all, success became a by-product of the overall vision and philosophy of the club.

Our U16’s had a standout year in our BYL program this year, finishing 2nd on the table and making the finals series, with 11 players selected into our U18’s senior squad for 2019.

Manly United also had 9 players selected in the NSW U13 and NSW U14 teams that competed at the FFA National Championships in Coffs Harbour.

Our U13s BYL squad flew to Germany for friendly matches against Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Viktoria Plzen. They then travelled to Rimini, to compete at the Flavio Protti tournament, playing against teams like Tottenham, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan and many other top Italian and international teams.

Men’s Senior Program

The highlight of our men’s senior program was our U18’s finishing 4th and progressing into the finals series, whilst fielding an extremely young group including players eligible for our U16s group. Led by and Chris Abbott, the young squad represented themselves and the region proudly. Calem Niewenhoff, Levi Kaye, Pratik Napit and Lachlan Scheffers have all been selected for the 2018 Australian All Schools team.

There is no doubt we have a fantastic group of young players coming into the senior ranks. Our U20’s and 1st grade sides had a mixed year of results but both squads will be back next season with extra motivation to improve their position. and Marty Judge did an excellent job of working with the U20’s to develop them and prepare them for the next stage of senior football, whether with the 1st team or elsewhere. Local juniors and long-time Manly United players Finn Ashton, Jamie Glover and Kye Conna have been rewarded with positions in the 2019 1st grade squad after their impressive season.

MANLY UNITED FC – TECHNICAL DIRECTOR WOMENS FOOTBALL

2018 saw the Manly United FC women’s program field teams in the FNSW NPL Competition in grades 14, 15,17, Reserve Grade and First Grade.

Four of five grades made the finals being our 14s (finished 2nd), 15s (finished 8th), 17s (finished 3rd), Reserve Grade (finished 3rd) and First Grade (finished 4th). Both the 14s and 17s made the Grand Final with the 14s losing in a penalty shoot-out and the 17s losing 3-2.

The women’s program finished second on the club championship. This is a measure of the club’s structure and the resilience of our coaching staff and players that enabled us to motivate us to excel, and that we did.

Our youth development programs, playing style, fair play, integrity and facilities are second to none, along with highly qualified, experienced and dedicated coaching staff, which is why we are often referred to as the ‘model’ women’s youth development program in NSW.

Once again I consider myself fortunate to have held the position of Technical Director of the women’s program at Manly United FC this year. Our players are a delight to work with from the SAP and Development Squad programs right through to First Grade. Most of them have learnt their trade at MUFC, many from as young as 11 and some even younger, with 12 of the 16 players in our First Grade Finals team being Manly juniors. This year saw the continuation of the U14/First Grade ‘buddy’ program. It was a great success, not only giving the younger girls a connection to the senior area, but also added to our club culture, especially on game day when most of the 14s would stay at Cromer all day and watch the First Grade girls play. It was also nice for the 14s to reverse the tables this year and have the first graders watch their Grand Final.

I know I speak for our coaching staff when I say that we are very fortunate to be charged with the responsibility of developing the best of the best on the peninsula and every year we work harder to do just that, whilst ensuring we have a balanced, nurturing environment where enjoyment and development is paramount, particularly in the youth grades. Believing in what we do, not veering from the script and working together as a unit is why we are at the top of the women’s game in NSW.

This year saw the 5th year of our Girls SAP (Skill Acquisition Program) and our second year of the full-time program in grades 10,11,12,13. The program has been a wonderful success, which is demonstrated by the number of Manly United players who were selected in the NSW PSSA Team (3 from our SAP program). Our Girls SAP program is underpinned by three development squads – U10,U11 and a combined U12/13.

We have a commitment to developing home grown juniors so that our senior squad continues to draw from our youth grades both in the short term and in the future and the Girls SAP is certainly providing the best platform for this to continue.

Once again our TRY SAP Day was a great success, attracting over 170 girls to Cromer Park at the end of the season. All our coaching staff were on deck along with a number of players from all grades, contributing to ensure the day ran like clockwork.

As I write this, we have now had 7 First Grade players sign W-League contracts for the coming season along with 2 x players signing overseas contracts – Remy Siemsen (USA) and Patty Charalambous (Malta).

Add to that, we had 3 x players selected in the NSW state teams who competed in the Girls National Football Championships in Coffs Harbour in July. Claudia Valletta, Clem Flanery and Kahli Johnson.

Subsequent to that tournament, Kahli Johnson (U14s) was selected in the Junior Matildas squad who travelled to the Kyrgyz Republic in September to compete in the AFC U16 Womens’ Championship Qualifiers where they were undefeated and so qualified.

We are in the business of developing elite footballers for Manly United and beyond, whether that be the W-League or National Teams and I am proud to say we are on track.

MWFA SKILLS ACQUISITION PROGRAM – BOYS

The 2018 Skill Acquisition Program has now officially drawn to a close.

The 2018 season was a success for many reasons. Most people involved with SAP programs are quick to point out result-based examples such as, the successes some of our teams achieved once again in at the or successes at gala days. However for myself, 2018 was a success once again due to the positive environment created both and training and on match days at Cromer Park. It is great to see that when both SAP licences travel to other associations or clubs that do not necessarily play to or create the correct environment for players to enjoy the game we can always hold our heads high that we always continue to do the right thing for the players.

This year saw our U11 side travel overseas to Europe to compete against some top European teams and throughout the tour the players and parents represented Manly United and the MWFA to the highest possible standard both on and off the field.

The teaching culture within the Skill Acquisition Program could not have been represented better than with the current coaching staff. We could not be more proud of the way they have conducted themselves. They are great coaches and great people, which is why I believe their teaching messages resinated with the players so well. So to the coaches, I say a huge thank you! You are such a critical piece of the Manly United FC/MWFA Skill Acquisition jig-saw.

I would also like to say a big thank you the team managers for the momentous effort organising their respective teams they have put in this season as well as to SAP convenor Rob Swadling.

On behalf of your children, I would like to thank you, the parents. The players may not understand yet the level of commitment required but I do know they appreciate your support and for always being there for them. To anyone who has contributed to the program in the slightest way, from setting up or packing away fields, to helping in the canteen, refereeing games or even playing taxi, I sincerely thank you for your contribution to this season’s program.

A huge thank you to all the staff who are involved at Manly United FC and MWFA. To the members of the board, the admin ladies (Lee-Anne, Angela and Karon) and Dave Mason, thank you for such an incredible and supportive working environment.

Dusan Mihajlovic MWFA SAP Head Coach

JUDICIARY REPORT

Thanks to the Judiciary panel members for their wisdom and attendance each Wednesday night during the season namely David Wilson, Don Gale, Cass Greco, Richard Wright, and Tony Cavalieri also thanks to the referee’s representatives who helped during the meetings. We had a few changes this season, and a few more are to be put to the AGM in November. We had only a couple of appeals last season which is good, and only a few challenges, and these were mainly due to clubs not advising players of the correct procedures after receiving a suspension. The MWFA are still bringing the Judiciary rules in line with FNSW rules and this will help to eliminate any loopholes etc.

It continues to be the majority of serious offences are in the R6 category i.e. Foul and Abusive Language mainly towards match officials. This has been the case for many years and we are at a loss as to how to stamp this out. Maybe the Referees will have to take a firmer approach to bad language and the judiciary will have to hand out longer suspensions. One of the proposed changes is the implementation of a General Purposes Tribunal, this panel will have the power to deal with matters that do not come under the judiciary jurisdiction, and will be a separate group of panel members who will be able to hand down stiffer penalties than the judiciary were able, to spectators and clubs.

If anyone out there in club land would like to join the judiciary panel they are most welcome, the current panel if re-elected at the AGM would benefit from having a wider selection of club representation as some times various panel members have to stand down from a case as it involves their club, and the experience you would gain is both enjoyable and interesting.

Wishing everyone a safe and Merry Christmas, see you all in 2019,

Keith Pester, Judiciary Secretary
