A great start made by the girls’, placing high pressure on Northbridge FC. A good run was made by # 4 Sarah Rogers and a solid 1 on 1 finish a great way to start 2012. 1‐0 Manly. The game settled and Manly began playing a close passing game that Northbridge were extremely frustrated by. Some strong work from # 11 Kristie Crawford to win a corner which she drove in low, well controlled by # 10 Liz Morison and coolly finished. 2‐0 Manly. Towards the end of the 1st half Kristie made space for herself and from well outside the 18 yard box on the left side of the field drove home a perfect finish into the top right hand corner of the net. 3‐0 Manly. A brilliant 1st half of football, and the lead well deserved. About 7 minutes into the 2nd half the girls were off again. Sarah Rogers almost finished the movement herself, but Liz Morison was on hand to tap the ball home. 4‐0 Manly. Kristie made a great run to the by‐line, cutting the ball back and Sarah Rogers blasted the ball over the crossbar, some great signs. 2 goals in the last 20 minutes, the first to # 17 Tiarn Powell and the second awarded as an own goal displayed the dominance that Manly had over Northbridge FC. The girls should be proud of their first up efforts, and must be looking forward to the season ahead. Hopefully with this type of effort 1st grade can push forward and be a major force in the Women’s Premier League this year. Goal scorers: 5’ and 52’# 4 Sarah Rogers, 33’#10 Liz Morison, 39’#11 Kristie Crawford, 70’#17 Tiarn Powell, 76’ own goal. Heads down girls, some tougher opposition await!

Women’s Reserve Grade Reports Round 01 –18/03/11 at Macquarie Uni – Manly v Northbridge Manly 2 Defeated Northbridge 0 Wet conditions and a poor surface greeted the girl’s start to season 2012. An influx of players from the U/16’s, and a great base from last year’s Champions’ make up what looks to be a side that has an enormous amount of potential, however they meet a side that is a complete unknown so far. The girl’s started off really well with an upbeat tempo that caught Northbridge out within the first 6 minutes. With most of the possession a great cross came from the left and a good finish from # 5 Ellen Wheatley. A contentious yellow card was issued on 30 minutes for what appeared to be a hard but fair challenge. The girl’s defended the free kick well though. First half finished at 1‐0 to MUFC. Our girl’s in complete control of the game, although not out of reach of Northbridge FC. The 2nd half started like the 1st, quick and direct. # 23 Carly Ussher with great vision from outside the 18 yard box chipped the keeper with a great display of skill. 2 nil to Manly FC. Manly dominated the game from the start to finish. Northbridge FC rarely making headway into our 18 yard area. A brilliant Reserve Grade debut for # 31 Gabriella Janu, who has grown in confidence and her efforts down the left side of the field were inspiring to watch. Late in the game Gabrielle made a great run down the left, crossing the ball in from wide. Meeting the ball was # 12 Alex Kent whose header slammed off the crossbar. Great play from all the girls with some wonderful prospects for the season ahead. Congratulations to Tom Hopley and the Reserve grade girls’. Goal scorers: 6’#5 Ellen Wheatley, 48’#23 Carly Ussher

Round 01 –18/03/11 at Macquarie Uni – Manly v Northbridge Manly 3 Defeated Northbridge 0 After a downpour on Saturday, the pitch conditions at Macquarie’s University Oval were less than perfect – though marginally better than those around the boundary judging by Tara’s wading retrievals of the ball off left wing. It might have been tempting to view a first round draw against a team just up from Super League as a gift, but Northbridge FC were no pushover – as earlier challenges to the U12 and U14 teams demonstrated. Throughout the first half, the ball remained consistently in the Manly half – which was fortunately at the clubhouse end and a little easier for the audience perched on the hill to see. Manly earned the first corner, which Miho played short; it ended up in the midst of the crowd on the edge of the box and was cleared. Shortly after, a through ball freed Georgina up to use her speed to easily pass her opponent, but her chip shot passed over the goal. Several free‐kicks went in Manly’s favour, with Miho creating some good chances, though nothing yet that beat the Northbridge goal keeper. Nicole was first brought into the game at about the 15‐minute mark – an indication of how Manly dominated the early attack. Her long clearance found Tara, and the ball reached Georgina via Lisa, but the shot drifted wide.

www.manlyunitedfc.com.au MUFC Match Day Program WPL Round 02 of 2012 Issue #1 Page 9 Northbridge then headed into their first sustained period of attack, with clever clearances by Lara averting damage. Tenacious Annie avoided a potential corner, before Ash called the first substitution (Kayla replacing Miho) and Northbridge again struck forward, the ball falling into the safe hands of Nicole. An excellent through ball by Thommo brought Nicola into the game almost immediately after she and Sarah rested Tara and Georgina, but Nic was outpaced and the goalkeeper earned the ball. Persistent attacks followed, with reward eventually earned by Kayla who cleverly took the pace off a loose opposition pass to beat the keeper at the near corner. Manly 1‐0 Confidence grew after the first goal, and prior to half time Ella went close with a long‐range strike and Nicola narrowly missed a very tight angle when she picked up a ball fumbled in the box. Second half It must have been a hot half‐time talk from Ash, with the girls returning to the field firing on all cylinders – or perhaps the stiffness was working its way out of the pristine new uniforms. Early on, a deep cross from Nicola at right back made its way into the box, eventually falling loose for Kayla to finish her second success of the morning. Manly 2‐0 Falling behind on the scoresheet, Northbridge upped the pace with a concerted attack on goal, only to meet with a sound block at Annie’s feet followed by a conclusive clearance by Mack. Directly back into the Manly half, and Nicola picked up a loose ball, which she managed to thread low into the goal. Manly 3‐0 Northbridge retaliated with an attacking move down the right wing; Annie persistently troubled the winger, forcing her strike over the goal shortly before rain arrived. Despite increasingly slippery conditions, some good footwork at the edge of the box nearly created a fourth opportunity, before the ref found a Northbridge free kick in the melee. Despite the score line, Manly’s efforts did not wane as the second half drew to a close. Thommo threaded through several neat passing balls, Georgina had several good opportunities, Ella struck in a thumping long distance drive that fell wide, and Lisa turned neatly for a cross that failed to meet a convenient foot. Sarah achieved an excellent header off a cross, but unfortunately it fell into the keeper’s hands; a free kick and some good footwork by Claire created more chances for Georgina, whose pace consistently troubled the opposition. With the final whistle, Manly completed an excellent start to the season – three points and an enviable goal difference. The new white socks look a little worse for wear: possibly we need to negotiate a team bulk buy on Napisan.

Round 01 –18/03/11 at Macquarie Uni – Manly v Northbridge Manly 1 Lost to Northbridge 2 The manly girls arrived at Macquarie Uni grounds ready for their first hit out against newcomers Northbridge. Our warm up was sound and we were all hopeful of a strong start. Our first half was pleasing with good passing and building up from our backs, solid contests from our midfielders and numerous attempts by our strikers. Our teamwork proved fruitful and we were one up when Northbridge replied off a messy corner. We went to the half time break locked at one all. Our second half was not our best work! Messy play and scrambling saw our second goal disallowed as the keeper was down. Northbridge scored a second goal with a runaway play and the manly girls were down 2‐1. A constructive post game talk from the coaches encouraged the girls to train hard, remain focused, and play for each other. We look forward to a strong contest against Marconi next week.

Round 01 –18/03/11 at Macquarie Uni – Manly v Northbridge Manly 0 drew with Northbridge 0 It was an extremely early start for our first competition outing against new entrants to the comp, Northbridge. From the first whistle, Northbridge came out fighting and brought the game to us, fiercely contesting every 50/50 ball and winning the majority. A fairly rusty and sluggish old start for the Manly girls, looking as if we’d lost our groove and confidence since our previous trial win over the Koalas. Northbridge threatened early, with their star left striker being the go‐to player. She was particularly menacing and took a number of shots. Great keeping by Nicki and excellent kicking from the hand eased the pressure. Lily got back on a number of occasions, with her lightning speed, to thwart a series of attacks up the middle. Manly didn’t really look like scoring in the first half except for a long range shot from Emma, over at left back, which was well saved by the Northbridge keeper. The second half was an improvement by the girls. Darby was marking the star left forward in the second half and really gave her a run for her money. Teigan had some strong attacking runs and everyone in the mid‐field competed more strongly. Antonia almost scored late in the match after positioning herself well and sending a left foot shot across which was well saved by the keeper. The girls seemed to find their groove at the death, unfortunately not in time for us to get points on the board and snatch a win. A few grey hairs for coaches Joe and Anthony this week and plenty to finesse at training during the week. Northbridge came out firing, showing that they mean business and sent a signal to all the teams in the 12’s comp that they are deserving of a spot in premier league. Report by Sharon Connolly
