Executed first on a small scale that oscillated between the form of the model and the form of table- top sculpture, the works were emphatic in their distance from the shape and tenor of the dominant field of welded metal sculpture. These initial ambiguities were retained, exaggerated even, as their scale changed. The better-known results of Bontecou's experimentation, her wall reliefs from the early 1960s, were seen as hybrid, unfixed, and fascinating. One early relief dated 195-9 and Elyse Speaks included in the Duke University exhibition Women in Contemporar)'Art in 1963, was described in that exhibition catalogue: "Her construc- The Terms of Craft and tions in canvas and metal, intricately sewed and tied together, swell outward from the wall in heavy forms that build into space. ' The description highlights her methods of Lee Bontecou*s Hybrid making and seizes on the composite nature of the form—one in process between the pictorial two-dimensionality of painting and Trajectory the material three-dimensionality of sculpture. Several of Bontecou's earliest reliefs were based on a bisected structure that encouraged the suggestions of transformation, process, and dyna- mism. In the 1959 untitled relief, an imperfect diagonal runs almost completely from the composition's upper right to its bottom left. Above that line, the fiattish fabric fragments comprise more or less concentric rings—unified, repetitive, and centripetal in feeling. Below, in contrast, the overwhelming sense is of an increasingly swelled form that is also shattered, fractured, and in collapse. The latter fragraents show as much variation in depth, shape, and size as there is tnii- formity above. Yet, notably, the visibility of the work's armature and stitching acts to unify the two halves by drawing attention to their shared weave and structure. Implicit in the very palpable, divided nature of the work's construction is the significance of a third term, craft, which must be brought to bear on this per- ceived intersection between painting and sculpture. This essay aims to approach the topic of craft as it plays out in the reception of a woman sculptor, as well as I would like to thank a number of people for their in her methods of making. The Terms of Craft In the late 19ÍOS when Bontecou began making the reliefs, and into the early and mid-1960s when their status reached a critical peak, responses to Bontecou's work suggested that the structure and tenor of the objects spoke of functionality, yet in such a way as to deprive the terms of any clear use. Initially when we see something that appears mechanical and larger than the body, as Bontecou's reliefs tend to be, we suspect the realm of the industrial. The prominent uses of steel and copper, the dominance of browns, tans, and blacks, and the persistent sense that these materials had industrial pasts lend to the association. Critics sometimes capitalized on the history of the parts to make the connection official; one of the common facts to appear in early accounts of Bontecou's work was her use of dis- carded conveyor belts retrieved from the laundromat below her apartment in New York. In other words, recombining different parts, many of which seemed to hail from mundane and anonymous spaces, was widely understood as a viable way of holding on to that history, to that sense that there is a functionality at play that related to the larger world of labor. * At the same time, critics regularly emphasized the expressive, handmade nature of Bontecou's reliefs. Dore Ashton, for instance, wrote that Bontecou's works "very often remind me of the great wooden totems of the Pacific Northwest."* In this, Bontecou was perceived to engage with a variation on an antisculptural tradition—one largely initiated by Rodin—by allowing the mark of the maker to supersede the work's authority as a vehicle of communication.     The Wandering Eye Works on Paper From the 60s and 70s Lee Bontecou, Jasper Johns, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Morris, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist April 10 – May 19, 2007 This exhibition of works represents the moment in post-war art when figuration begins to return after a long period of Abstract Expressionism. Works on paper seem to represent the starting point; the beginning of an idea, and similarly, collage, even as a finished work, has the feeling of a ‘scrapbook’ or record of different ideas coalescing. In some of the earliest drawings in the show, Stones Sketch for Us, 1957 by Larry Rivers and Sketch for ‘The Critic Smiles’, 1959 by Jasper Johns, the viewer is confronted with images that are physical and intimate. The figures in Stones Sketch for Us are dissected in a way that makes one aware of the body: sketches of hands with no arms, faces and necks with no bodies, and figures melding into one another forming one ‘self’. In Johns’s Sketch for ‘The Critic Smiles’, a toothbrush that replaces bristles with human teeth is represented, once again bringing to mind the physicality of the body and the intimate act of grooming one’s self. Lee Bontecou’s Untitled, 1972-73 confronts the viewer directly with eyes peering out of a machine-like face. The segmented composition is unsettling; the main components of a human face and neck are present, but the figure itself is not entirely ‘human’. In collages by Robert Rauschenberg, Untitled (Self-Portrait for Dwan Gallery poster), 1965, and Larry Rivers, Untitled, 1963, the figure is prominent, yet, the works incorporate many other elements, particularly through the artists use of disparate and multilayered materials.

    Title Page The Encrypted Object: The Secret World of Sixties Sculpture Joanne Louise Applin University College London PhD nL ABSTRACT This thesis examines the work of artists Lucas Samaras,Lee Bontecou and HC Westermann, specifically the way in which they have been excluded from dominant accounts of 1960s sculptural practice. I explore the ways in which a theory of 'secrecy' provides a framework through which to think about each of these artists. Chapter one focuses on Samaras's use of small-scale boxes in relation to his dialogue with the Minimal cubic structure, whilst the second chapter examines the structures of Bontecou in terms of their 'secrecy'. Working from welded steel armatures, Bontecou developed a unique practice of stretching dirty, worn skeins of fabric over the metal structure, always with a gaping hole backed with black felt, a disturbing void (MA around which the surface is organised and the spectatorial encounter disturbed. Unlike the voracious mode of looking Bontecou's works engender, or the partial, fragmented 'peering' offered by Samaras's boxes, Westermann's works require a type of looking that has more in common with the physical act of 'drifting'. I cast both the viewing experience and the mode of construction Westermann's works demand, in terms of 'bricolage' and 'braconnage' (or 'poaching). The concluding chapter analyses the role of the artistic homage and notion of influence, taking as model the work of psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok on haunting and secrecy in relation to the work of Westermann alongside that of Bruce Nauman and Rachel Whiteread. In chapter four I introduce the idea of the 'phantom, as a way of thinking through the problems of inheritance at work in the artistic homage in terms of a series of ruptures, using Abraham and Toroks' concept of the 'transgenerational phantom', in which familial secretsare unwittingly inherited by one's ancestors.

Collection of the artist Bontecou’s early life studies reflect the instruction she received at the Art Students League in New York in the early 1950s. One of her first courses revolved around a methodology developed by the school’s former instructor Kimon Nicolaïdes. He believed that drawing requires "physical contact with all sorts of objects through the senses," and he encouraged students to look into the world, rather than to art history and art theory, for inspiration. Collection of the artist Bontecou used this found ledger, with accounting notations and calculations, as a sketchbook when she was living and working in lower Manhattan in the late 1950s and early ’60s. Nearly all of its 140 pages are filled with drawings, many of them serving as preparatory steps for her large-scale sculptures. Author Joan Banach has described the ledger as a "protean first monograph" and has discussed these "delicately and helically spiraled" drawings as anticipating "the invertebrate chambers of the marine and web-like forms in Bontecou’s work of the 1980s."     Minimalism 1 Minimalism Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features. As a specific movement in the arts it is identified with developments in post–World War II Western Art, most strongly with American visual arts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Prominent artists associated with this movement include Donald Judd, John McLaughlin, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, Anne Truitt, and Frank Stella. It is rooted in the reductive aspects of Modernism, and is often interpreted as a reaction against Abstract expressionism and a bridge to Postmodern art practices. The terms have expanded to encompass a movement in music which features repetition and iteration, as in the compositions of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and John Adams. Minimalist compositions are sometimes known as systems music. (See also Postminimalism). The term "minimalist" is often applied colloquially to designate anything which is spare or stripped to its essentials. It has also been used to describe the plays and novels of Samuel Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the stories of Raymond Carver, and even the automobile designs of Colin Chapman. The word was first used in English in the early 20th century to describe the Mensheviks.[1] Minimalist design The term minimalism is also used to describe a trend in design and architecture where in the subject is reduced to its necessary elements. Minimalist design has been highly influenced by Japanese traditional design and architecture. In addition, the work of De Stijl artists is a major source of reference for this kind of work.
