I see it not only as a possibility but as a probability. I feel a call to an associate position is as important as a call to a senior position. It could very well be a lifetime calling. I had an associate, Bruce Gunn, who was divinely called to be an associate pastor. He had been an associate for 38 years and served on my staff for 10 years before he retired. He knew his calling and fulfilled his role wonder- fully. He was a great asset and was loyal to me as a pastor, loyal to the church, and loyal to the Fellowship-he exemplified fully and beautifully the associate pastor's role. Now, there are some who feel like the asso- ciate position is a stepping-stone. I've never believed it. I believe there are times when God An associate's success is one factor the senior pastor should never view as a threat but should rejoice. In my role as senior pastor, I wanted to find the strongest, the best, the most capable associates I could find because they helped carry the load. They made the senior pastor look good. I wanted them to have the joy of succeeding and the joy of having the congregation appreciate them and love them. I look at the associate as pastoring a small- er congregation within a larger congregation. Whether it be the youth, college, singles, or the senior citizens, each group becomes the asso- ciate's congregation. It's important that they have a close relationship with that segment of the congregation and know they have the sup- port of the senior pastor. Senior pastors should be thrilled when God is blessing their associ- ates' ministry-never jealous but always rejoicing with those who rejoice. As A PASTOR,HOW DID YOUCHOOSEASSO- CIATES? WHAT DID YOU LOOK FOR? First of all, I never looked at a resume. I liked to look the prospective associate in the eyes- to find out the spirit of the person, to look for a servant's heart. I wanted to know what the individual's calling was. I looked at goals, ambition, and passion-was it for people? was it to minister? was it just a job? I wasn't inter- ested in associates who were just looking for positions, titles, or monetary reward. I wanted people who had a passion for ministry. Some years ago I was interviewing for a staff position in the church. I shared the responsibilities and ministry description and indicated to the young man interviewing for the position that the church board would be very generous in its financial remuneration. Then I asked him if he had any questions. He said, "Yes. Brother Trask, what is my pack- age?" When he said that, he told me where his heart was. Now, that doesn't mean that the associate always agrees with the senior pastor. If the associate remains teachable, loyal, and has a servant's heart, the senior pastor will be well served. INTRODUCTION In this chapter we describe the birth, growth and indigenization of Korean pente- costalism in Korea (Sunbogeum pentecostalism) in two decades (1953-1972). The three most important factors that formed Sunbogeumism in this period were the support of the American Assemblies of God (missions and theological aspect), the activity of Yonggi Cho (leadership aspect), and the receptivity of Korean religiosity (socio-cultural aspect). From the time that the armistice between the United Nations and North Korea was signed in July 1953, the South Koreans began to enjoy freedom for the first time in many decades since the Japanese interference (1876). The modernization of Korea began to be realized in the true sense of the word by Koreans themselves. Christianity also began to be fully active for the first time in two centuries since its introduction. Classical pentecostalism in Korea also began to flower at this time, finding the right supporter, the right personality, and the right soil. Since 1961, through military revolution and regime, Korean society has experienced a wide spectrum of changes resulting from rapid industralization and economic revolution. Such a situation provided Korean pentecostalism with an opportunity to flourish in it.1 Even though pentecostal theology was introduced through missionaries, it was fully developed by Korean pentecostals in Korean soil. We call this Sunbogeum pentecostalism. While American pentecostals planted pentecostalism in Korea through theology, organization, and finances, the Koreans received them and tried to re-produce an ‘original pentecostalism’ according to Biblical principles.

Introduction It has become evident that the task is rather formidable to bring a useful reflection on the history of a Pentecostal body in country in its more than half a century history. At the same time, I feel I have an edge in that the observations were made from the perspective of both an “insider and outsider.” There are personal anecdotes that can be corroborated by those who are still alive. These validate what has been written and experienced by others. Not all correspondence, minutes, and reflections that were published and presented in more formal settings are available to this writer at the moment. This is a handicap of sorts. However, this presentation should not be viewed as the end, but, rather the beginning of our continued pursuit of our “roots”. We owe it to the next generations, should Jesus tarry, to transmit to them our cherished legacy. More materials ought to be written and the “stories” and other oral recitals of how God brought us thus far “through many dangers, toils and snares.” This small contribution of this writer begins with a quick look at personal background to help the audience understand some dynamics of this presentation. 1.1 My Journey of Faith I grew up in a Methodist family and church. Holland, Director of PROLADES Draft copy on 22 September 2009 / Updated on 8 February 2011 PART I It is generally agreed that one of the major ecumenical bridges worldwide between Roman Catholics and Protestants in the late 1970s and early 1980s was the John 17:21 Fellowship that was associated with the international ministry David du Plessis. However, until recently, little information has been available about how this organization actually came into being and how it developed. In correspondence with my friend Paul Northrup, one of the original participants in the John 17:21 Fellowship, a more complete picture of this story has now emerged. The Historical context On February 4, 1976, Guatemala City and a large part of the country (16 of 22 departments) were severely shaken by a major earthquake that registered 7.5 on the Richter scale, which caused massive destruction and loss of life. According to Roger Plant (1978:5), “Of a total population of approximately 5,500,000, over 22,000 were killed, more than 77,000 injured and over 1,000,000 made homeless; it was the severest natural catastrophe in Central America during the twentieth century.” The response of Protestant denominations and service agencies, both national and inter-national, to the survivors in the aftermath of this earthquake was swift and significant, both in terms of emergency assistance and more long-term community development activities. This produced a favorable reaction among those who received immediate as well as long-term assistance from evangelical organizations, with a resulting burst of growth in attendance and membership of evangelical churches.

This is not surprising since our day is characterized by anti-systemization and eclecticism in the area of thought. It may be surprising, to some, to learn that Dispensationalism was developed and spread during its first 100 years by those within a Reformed, Calvinistic tradition. It had only been in the last 75 to 50 years that Dispensationalism and some of its beliefs were disseminated in any significant way outside of the orbit of Calvinism. I am referring to that aspect of Calvinism that speaks of the fallen nature of man and the elective grace of God. Second, by Dispensationalism, I have in mind that system of theology that was developed by J. N. Darby that gave rise to its modern emphasis of consistent literal interpretation, a distinction between God's plan for Israel and the church, usually a pretribulational rapture of the church before the seventieth week of Daniel, premillennialism, and a multifaceted emphasis upon God's glory as the goal of history. This includes some who have held to such a system by may stop short of embracing pretribulationism.
