The Fight in Congress to Prohibit Funding for Indian Sectarian Schools and Its Effects on Montana Gunstream 2 Preface: During winter break of my sophomore and senior years I went on a headlights trip to Browning, MT with Carroll College Campus Ministry. We worked at a De La Salle Blackfeet School, a private catholic school that served kids from fourth through eighth grade. I was inspired by the work they were doing there and from my knowledge it was the only Catholic Indian school in Montana and this perplexed me—it was my knowledge that the original Catholic missions had schools on the reservations. In April of my sophomore year I went to Dr. Jeremy Johnson’s office to discuss writing an honors thesis on the relationship between the government and Indian reservation schools in Montana. He was very excited about the idea and told me to start reading up on the subject. I started reading on the history of the Catholic missions in Montana. I was interested by the stories of the nuns and priests who came a long ways to start these missions and serve the Native Americans. And I was interested in how prominent the Catholic Church was in the development of Montana. So I asked myself, what happened to them? The authors of the books answered this question only briefly: the federal government cut funding for these schools between 1896 and 1900, and the mission schools could barely survive without these funds. Eventually, some faster than others, they withered away. -

1 Building a Community: The Physical and Cultural Development of Pittsburgh’s Highland Park Neighborhood, 1778-1900 Nathaniel Mark, The Johns Hopkins University1 INTRODUCTION American history has a unique relationship with suburban residential life. Unlike many of their continental European counterparts, American commuter suburbs since their inception in the 19th century have been a symbol of the growing wealth of the American population. Indeed, suburban life and the American dream are often analogous concepts. Since Pittsburgh emerged as an industrial city, its suburbs have steadily grown from small upper-class rural retreats into the most prominent form of residential communities in Western Pennsylvania.2 Yet, the dominance of suburbs was not the inevitable outcome of industrialization. Prior to the latter half of the 19th century it was not even apparent that Pittsburgh’s well-to- do would rather live in peripheral areas than in the inner city. 1 This research was conducted as an undergraduate sophomore thesis in history. Mellon’s life spanned the abolition of slavery and PITTSBURGH invention of television, the building of the fi rst bridge across the Mississippi and construction of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass and Walt Disney’s Snow White, the Dred Scott decision and the New Deal. Mellon was born the year the Paris Exposition exalted Delacroix and died the year Picasso painted Guernica. The man was as faceted as his era: an industrialist, a fi nancial genius, and a philanthropist of gar- gantuan generosity. Born into prosperous circumstances, he launched several of America’s most profi table corporations. A venture capitalist before the term entered the lexicon, he became one of the country’s richest men. Yet his name was barely known outside his hometown of Pittsburgh until he became secretary of the treasury at an age when many men retire. A man of myriad accomplishments, he is remem- bered best for one: Mellon founded an art museum by making what was thought at the time to be the single largest gift by any individual to any nation. Few philan- thropic acts of such generosity have been performed with his combination of vision, patriotism, and modesty. Fewer still bear anything but their donor’s name. But Mellon stipulated that his museum be called the National Gallery of Art. -
