Compatriots,

It is hard to believe that the semi-annual is just around the corner. The chapter continues to work to fulfill the objectives of our Society. On June 14th, Flag Day, members Dave Hoover, Chris Smithson, Ed Miller, Jeff Springer and myself handed out flags to our fellow citizens at the Harford County Court House. The week before congress the Col. Aquila Hall chapter SAR joined with the ladies of the Harbor of Grace and William Paca chapters as well as the Bush Declaration Society, C.A.R. and participated in the Be Air 4th of July parade. Chapter members Chris Smithson, Bill Smithson, Dave Hoover, Frank Blake, Sam Raborg and I participated. Thanks to the efforts of Bill Smithson and Sandi Wallis and Elizabeth Wrona and others, we won first place in the floats Sam and Lou Raborg at the grave of Brigadier General Mordecai Gist (1742-1792) at St. Michael’s Church division. A week later, my wife and I attended the National Congress in Houston along with chapter members, Bill Smithson and Dave Hoover. On Aug. 4th I attended the Col. Aquila Hall Summer cookout hosted by compatriot David Hoover and his wife Susan Brown. Tell The Story – Harford County’s First Veterans Dr. John Archer, M.B. (1741-1810) By: Christopher T. Smithson

John Archer was born near Churchville, Baltimore County (now Harford County), Maryland on May 5, 1741, the son of Thomas Archer and Elizabeth Stevenson. He attended the West Nottingham Academy in Cecil County, Maryland, later graduating from Princeton College in 1760. He studied theology, but owning to a throat infection, he abandoned his studies in that area and began the study of medicine. He graduated from the College of in 1768, receiving the first medical diploma issued in America.

In 1769, John Archer practiced law in Harford County. During the Revolutionary War he served in many ways. On March 22, 1775 just three weeks prior to the Battle of Lexington and Concord, Archer was one of the signers of the Bush Declaration signed at Bush, Harford County, Maryland. He later raised a military company which in he served as Captain. He was a member of the first state constitutional convention of 1776 and served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1777 to 1779. He later was volunteer aide-de- John Archer camp to General Anthony Wayne at Stony Point. On June 1, 1779, Archer was made a Captain and later a Major in the Continental Army. Well Known Descendants: Along with his son, Thomas Archer he founded the medical and Stevenson Archer (1786-1848) – chirurgical faculty of Maryland in 1799. He later served as a U.S. U.S. Congressman; U.S. Judge for Congress from 1801 to 1807. the Territory of , with powers of Governor. Chief Judge He married Catherine Harris, daughter of Thomas Harris and Mary of the Maryland Court of Appeals. McKinney. She was born on March 22, 1742 and died on February 3, 1815 at “Medical Hall” in Churchville, Harford County, Maryland. Stevenson Archer II (1827-1898) – John died on September 28, 1810 at “Medical Hall”. Both were U.S. Congressman. buried at Churchville Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Churchville, Maryland. Today eight generations of Dr. Archer’s descendants are George Archer (1848-1920) – buried along with him at Churchville Presbyterian. Architect.

Dr. George Washington Archer John and Catherine had the following children: Thomas (1768- (1824-1907) – Served CSA, Founder 1821); Mary (1770-1777); Stevenson (1772-1779); Elizabeth (1774- of Historical Society of Harford 1775); Robert Harris (1775-1857); John (1777-1830); James (1779- County, 1885. 1815); George Washington (1781-1800); Infant (1785-1785); Stevenson (1786-1848). James J. Archer (1817-1864) CSA, Brig. Gen. Four of Dr. John Archer’s sons became doctors. His son Stevenson, a lawyer, was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from George Earle Chamberlain, Sr. 1809 to 1811; U.S. House of Representatives from 1811 to 1817; (1854-1928) – Governor of .

U.S. Judge for the Territory of Mississippi, with powers of Governor John Archer Lejeune (1867-1942) from 1817 to 1818 and Chief Judge of Court of Appeals of Maryland – Maj. Gen., U.S. Marine Corps, from 1821 until his death in 1848. 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps (1920-1929).

On Sept 5th I helped chapter chairman Glenn Ross present our chapter winner with her 3rd place National prize in the Americanism Poster Contest. On Sept 6th I attended the 50th anniversary of the General William Smallwood Chapter at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Silver Spring, Maryland. President James Perry discussed the long history of the chapter and invited past chapter presidents tell their stories of their experience through the years. Maryland State President Jim Adkins spoke about the MD 400 and the acquisition of Letters from General Smallwood, the chapter’s namesake. Past PG Joe Dooley congratulated the chapter and helped install its latest new member.

On Sept. 8th I attended a wreath laying by Maryland CAR president Daniel Klein at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, DC. On Sept.16, my wife and I will attend the SAR/DAR/CAR Constitution Day luncheon and evening debutant ball at the Radison Casino Resort in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
