In the cold weather, bees tend to live longer because they're less active. Honey production stops because there's no nectar to gather. No drones exist to require care, and the queen stops laying eggs, so the bees pass the winter eating honey, clustered together for warmth. During winter, the colony shrinks as the older generation dies. Younger bees mature and raise the larvae. When spring comes, the queen begins laying eggs, and the cycle starts buzzing again. Making sure it has proper ventilation and room to lay eggs and store honey is usually enough. Keeping a young queen in the hive also discourages swarming. But no method is foolproof. Ultimately you can't prevent swarming, only post- pone it, says Glenn Musser, who has kept bees for 15 years. That's one of the reasons he defines beekeeping as learning to work with nature.
