In its fifth instalment, SMYD, which is organised annually by YODA, brought 13 teams from various institutions and organisations on a national platform to debate on issues relevant to the Singaporean Muslim youths. TMR congratulates YODA Team One, the Champion of SMYD 2014, as well as the organising committees of SMYD through the years that worked to bring this event to the community and give the youths the opportunity to openly engage in debates about Muslim issues with English as the language medium. TMR, in this edition, looks at the difference in the views on religion that we experience today as compared to yesterday. In the main feature, Dr Yamin Cheng reminds us of how mankind has been religious all along, since day one of their existence, regardless of how they may think that religion is only ‘something out of the many things’ in their lives. If our eyes truly see, Islam is embedded within and around us. With the call towards positive activism amplified today, TMR brings into focus the efforts of our New Zealand brothers and sisters who are raising funds to build their first Islamic orphanage and foster home for the Muslim children. With an area of 3,600 square metres, it can accommodate about 5,000 worshippers at a time, and includes a Madrassa with a capacity for 60 students. Local Samaran architect, named Rasim Valshin, designed the mosque, with carpets from Tajikistan lining the halls of the buildings. The minaret stands at 67 metres while an apple orchard decorates the compounds. This region is unique in the variety of ethnic groups, cultures, languages, it can compete by the number of represented nations with Moscow, Tyumen region (Barysheva, 2007; Karabulatova, Sayfulina & Ahmetova, 2013 & Karabulatova, Koyshe & Gultyaev, 2003). The purpose of this article is to review the role of public institutions in socio-cultural adaptation of migrants in the Samara region, in connection with which the authors solve the following tasks: provide a description of the social institutions participating in socio-cultural adaptation of migrant workers; determine the specifics of the migration processes and migration flows in the Samara region; substantiate the specificity of socio-cultural adaptation of migrant workers; conduct a comparative analysis of adaptation measures in the Samara region with other regions of Russia, near and far abroad.

Raleigh) This dissertation examines the introduction and implementation of Soviet nationalities policies among Russians and Tatars in the city of Kazan, an important cultural, educational, and industrial capital in the heart of Soviet Russia. Following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and the creation of the Tatar Republic in 1920, Kazan functioned as a laboratory in which Party-state authorities experimented with incorporating national minorities into the new socialist society under construction. Soviet nationalities policies allowed Tatars to pursue educational, political, and social opportunities denied them under the tsarist regime. Initiatives such as korenizatsiia (indigenization) and the “Realization of the Tatar Language” sought to bring national minorities into the mainstream of Soviet life by recruiting and training them to work in local Party-state apparatuses, industrial enterprises, and academic institutions. Supporting native cadres would make Soviet power seem indigenous, rather than something imposed by a new form of Russian colonialism. While these endeavors constantly ran into various roadblocks, over time they did attain some success in promoting indigenous minorities into positions of authority within the local Party-state apparatus, giving them an active role in shaping their own system of rule.
