In this era, transformation of space and society were the main aims of the young Turkish Republic. In this regard industrial facilities were constructed across the country in terms of the principles of statism. Coming to the present day, some of these industrial facilities were closed due to reasons such as change in production patterns, new technological developments and the decrease in productivity. These derelict industrial areas with their physical components and infrastructures, which are not actively used today, are important for the future of urban forms of our cities in many aspects. So as to understand and infer on how they can be conserved and reutilized in cities, first of all, it is important to analyze how those facilities affected on the spatial and social life of cities in past. It can be claimed that there is a relationship between their identities and urbanization process in Turkey. The Sümerbank factories are among these facilities, which remarkably impacted on the spatial and social life of cities. In this thesis, Sümerbank Nazilli Textile Factory will be examined within the framework of the concepts of lost space and industrial heritage, as well as three theories of urban design, namely; figure-ground, linkage and v place theories. In addition, ways of how to integrate it with urban context by protecting it with urban design approaches will be explored. Keywords: Urban Design, Industrial Heritage, Cultural Heritage, Lost Space vi ÖZ SANAYİ MİRAS ALANLARININ KENTSEL TASARIM YOLUYLA KENTLE BÜTÜNLEŞMESİ: SÜMERBANK NAZİLLİ BASMA FABRİKASI YERLEŞKESİ Bayındır, Atıf Emre Yüksek Lisans, Kentsel Tasarım Tez Danışmanı: Prof. Dr. Bahar Gedikli Aralık 2019, 162 sayfa 20. yüzyılın başları Türkiye’de devrim olarak nitelendirilebilecek bir modernizasyon dönemidir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Kentsel Tasarım, Sanayi Mirası, Kültürel Miras, Kayıp Mekan viii To My Family, ix ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to supervisor, Prof. Dr. Bahar Gedikli for her unlimited guidance, criticism, encouragement and insight throughout my academic education and this research. The Pakistan Journal of Forestry Vol.56(1), 2006 INVESTIGATIONS ON INSECT PESTS INFESTATION LEVELS OF DRIED FIG IN AYDIN AND IZMIR PROVINCES Ferit Turanli1 Abstract This study was carried out to determine the infestation level of dried fig pests during the year 2001 and 2002. The samples were collected from Aydin and Izmir provinces and villages where the production is extensively made and were kept in dark room with 25±3ºC and 60-80% relative humidity. The infestation levels of each fig samples in relation to pest emerging were measured periodically. According to the findings; fig moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and dried fruit beetle, Carpophilus spp. (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), were determined as the most important pests of all regions. The results of infestation levels of the pests are given separately for both in Aydin and Izmir provinces. Key words: Ficus carica cv. calimyrna, Ephestia cautella, Plodia interpunctella, Carpophilus spp., Turkey Introduction Fig is a native plant of the Middle East. Its cultivation was first realized in the fertile valleys of the Arabic peninsula. Through the aquatic tribes, it was distributed first around the Mediterranean Sea and then to United State of America. Its movement towards the east was rather slow due to the rainy and humid climate of southern and southeastern Asia. Fig tree is tolerant to marginal soil conditions such as calcium content, salinity and drought and other unfavorable soil conditions. Beside Turkey, Greece, United State of America and Brazil also are the most important fig producers in the World.

Turkey got heavily affected by these population movements. Especially, following the end of Ottoman sovereignty in the Balkan, struggles for sovereignty and related problems have showed up and continued up until the present time. Meanwhile, thousands of people were displaced from their homelands. Like the Balkans population in Western Anatolia have always been on the move due to population movements and political struggles between the East and the West that have taken place for centuries. Such population movements led to very sorrowful consequences for the Turkish and Muslims particularly from 1787 to the present time. People emigrated from the Balkans and immigrated to Anatolia in great numbers as a result of the Russo-Turkish Wars between 1787 and 1792, which was followed by immigrations after the Russo-Turkish War in 1877-1878, the Balkan War in 1912-1914, the World War I in 1914-1918. Immigrations to Turkey went on owing to population exchanges as required by the Lausanne Treaty in 1923, the unsurpressable unrests in the Balkans in the following years, and the Bosnian War between 1990 and 1995. A good many immigrant settlements have mushroomed across the country as a consequence of these immigrations to Turkey, which have continued from time to time over some 200 years.
