“Lord, as we gather at the beginning of this legislative term, I ask for Your blessing on all the people of Michigan. Bless all who labor in support of their families. May we value their work and afford to them dignity and respect for their contribution to our economy and our communities. Bless all of the families who call Michigan home. May we create an environment in which they have the resources they need to thrive. Bless all the children among us. May we love and cherish those in our care, and may we not turn our hearts away from those who suffer as a result of circumstances they have not chosen. Bless the elderly. May they live out their days secure in their well-being and with the knowledge that their life’s work is affirmed by those who follow them. As we in government work together to serve the people of Michigan, I ask that You prepare our hearts and our minds for the hard work of service to others. I pray that we think always of the greater good in all of our deliberations, and that our decisions reflect that we value each and every member of this community we call Michigan. I pray that there will be a generosity of spirit as we engage in legitimate disagreement and debate with each other. May we listen and speak to each other in such a way that acknowledges that each person here deserves to be heard and understood. May we celebrate and affirm what is just and good in our state, so that our communities will be strong in times when all is as it should be and in times when things seem to be going wrong. Let us also turn our hearts to the needs of those who suffer injustice. Let us not be afraid to defend the weak and the poor. Give us courage to act for their good. Summon out our best impulses of concern for each other, both in this house and among all the people of our great state. We ask these things, relying on Your compassion and grace, and confident in Your love. Amen.”

A resolution to declare January 27-February 2, 2013, as Catholic Schools Week in the state of Michigan. Whereas, There are 55,908 students attending 233 Catholic elementary and high schools throughout our great state; and Whereas, The Constitution of Michigan states that “Religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged”; and Whereas, Catholic schools provide young people with a strong foundation of values and academic skills needed to become responsible citizens of our state and nation; and Whereas, The Catholic Church sees as the primary educators and that parental supervision and involvement play a major role in the education of students; and Whereas, Catholic school parents pay tuition in addition to supporting public schools through their taxes; and Whereas, Catholic schools comply with the same health and safety regulations required of public schools, but without compensation from the state government; and Whereas, The viability of Catholic schools should be encouraged so that declines in Catholic school enrollment, which necessitate increases in public expenditures in the School Aid Fund, can be avoided; and Whereas, Catholic schools educate many students who are non-Catholic and many students who are economically disad- vantaged; and Whereas, With their traditionally high academic standards and high graduation rates, all supported by strong moral values, Catholic schools and their graduates make a positive contribution to American society; and Whereas, Community service is a value instilled in every Catholic school student; and Whereas, January 27-February 2, 2013, has been designated as Catholic Schools Week, with the theme “Catholic Schools Raise the Standards” as denoted by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops; and No. 5] [January 24, 2013] JOURNAL OF THE HOUSE 73

Whereas, The common good of the state of Michigan is strengthened through the continued existence of Catholic schools; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare January 27-February 2, 2013, as Catholic Schools Week in the state of Michigan. We recognize the great accomplishments and contributions of Catholic schools in and to our state; and be it further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the Michigan Catholic Conference with our highest esteem. A resolution to declare January 26, 2013, as Show Me The Money Day in the state of Michigan. Whereas, Ensuring all Michigan residents have access to opportunities to reach financial stability is critical to the success of the state’s economy; and Whereas, Current indicators reveal financial instability among Michigan’s families, in that 15% of families live in poverty and 40% of families live without enough liquid assets to sustain themselves at or above the poverty level for three months without income; and Whereas, Income tax season represents an important opportunity for families to save and plan for their financial futures; and Whereas, Financial opportunity at tax time is celebrated nationally with National Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day on January 25, 2013; and Whereas, Communities across the state of Michigan kick off tax season and connect residents with numerous financial resources, including free financial education classes, affordable financial products and services, and savings and asset building programs at local Show Me The Money Day events held annually on the last Saturday in January; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare January 26, 2013, as Show Me The Money Day in the state of Michigan.
