Such an accomplishment would not have been possible without the generous support of numerous individuals. The following is a list of truly amazing people including colleagues, friends, and family who believed in this project and in me even when I suffered my own doubts. To my committee members Brenda Child, Jennifer Marshall, Patricia Albers, and Jane Blocker I thank you for your guidance and encouragement throughout the completion of this project. I am honored to have you as my professional mentors. To good friends and graduate colleagues at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities including Karissa White, Erik Redix, Scott Shoemaker, Kate Beane, and Rudy Aguilar, I cherish your friendship and the camaraderie we shared. Special thanks goes to Karissa White, Issac Lopit, and Kate Beane for offering a place to stay and providing a sense of warmth and family on so many cold Minnesota winter nights. You helped make the long-distance commute and time away from my own family much more bearable. My family and our home are so precious to me. I thank my husband Nathan Norby and our children Alejandro Marroquin, Derek Norby, and Madeline Marroquin-Norby for all your love.

  • Rovang, Studio-House for Georgia O'keeffe
ISSN: 2471-6839 Cite this article: Sarah Rovang, “A ‘Studio-House for Georgia O’Keeffe,” Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art 6, no. 1 (Spring 2020), https://doi.org/10.24926/ 24716839.9718. A “Studio-House” for Georgia O’Keeffe Sarah Rovang, PhD, Independent Scholar I had seen Georgia O’Keeffe’s “House Files” before. In 2017, when I first became interested in the adobe house owned by O’Keeffe (1887–1986) in Abiquiu, New Mexico, I requested this material, which contains receipts and owner manuals for household items the artist purchased over many years. It is an eclectic collection, revealing that despite O’Keeffe’s reputation as a domestic minimalist, the artist was not averse to kitchen unitaskers, faddish exercise equipment, and linoleum. Having returned to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe as a research fellow in August 2019, and now involved in a larger research campaign related to the house, I decided to revisit these files. This time, however, in addition to the standard-size document boxes that I had seen two years ago, the museum archivist brought out two oversize containers. Fig. 1. Maria Chabot, two floor plans for Georgia O’Keeffe’s studio with specs for radiant heating system, 1947. Graphite and colored pencil on graph paper, approximately 18 x 24 in. Verso shows a full plan for the house, including electric, gas, and water utilities. Georgia O’Keeffe Papers (MS.33), House Files, oversize box 2. Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Michael S. Engl Family Foundation Library and Archive; photograph by the author with permission of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Whether these were recent accruals or I had simply missed them the first time was not immediately clear, but I was sure that I had never seen either before.

  • Filling the Grey Spaces
The Grey Space: Notions of Loss in Writing Real Lives Critical thesis & The Sculptress A work of creative non-fiction Lucie Alexandra Brownlee Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: William Fiennes, Professor Linda Anderson School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Faculty of Arts and Humanities Newcastle University, May 2018 1 Abstract This thesis in Creative and Critical Writing comprises two parts. The book, The Sculptress, is fictional interpretation of the life and work of the American artist and collector Mary Callery and her daughter, Caroline. It pivots around Callery’s fractured relationship with Caroline, suggesting the trajectory which led to the suicide of Caroline at the age of forty. It aims to throw new light on Callery’s considerable body of work, which has been overlooked by art history despite receiving critical acclaim. Set against fast-changing backdrop of European and American Modernism, it spans Callery’s lifetime, from her birth in 1903 to her death in Paris in 1977. The critical part of this thesis proposes that ‘loss’ is a central feature of writing creative non-fiction, and explores this with reference to the work of Naomi Wood and Julia Blackburn along with my own. Notions of loss emerged as the driving force behind my entire project: my own personal loss, loss of direction, loss of emotional, historical and factual truths. The ways in which Callery dealt with the ‘grey spaces’ in her own existence – that is to say, the distance between the two social poles she inhabited (avant- garde bohemia and old money, society New York), plus the grief she was unable to express about her daughter’s death – became the governing theme of the book.

The Flowers and Bones of Georgia O’Keeffe examines mystical philosophies prevalent during O’Keeffe’s development as an artist and their influence on her. The influence of mysticism is sought through the examination of selected flower and bone paintings by the modernist artist. I have viewed selected works through an ethnobotanical and anthropological lens, seeking depth and meaning in the artist’s work beyond the current interpretations which focus on gender, sexuality, and feminism. Through the prism of lotus, jimson flower, poppy, and sand dollar cactus, I have explored their importance to O’Keeffe, as well as the context of these plants in Eastern, Western, and Native American cultures in which she was interested. Ethnobotanical sources and intercultural seminars at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, were included in my research. In addition, a selection of tree portraits, representations of mystical writers the artist admired, are included. These portraits include The Lawrence Tree (D.

  • Georgia O'keeffe Biography
Georgia O’Keeffe biography GEORGIA O’KEEFFE was born on November 15, 1887, the second of seven children, and grew up on a farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. As a child she received art lessons at home, and her abilities were quickly recognized and encouraged by teachers throughout her school years. By the time she graduated from high school in 1905, O’Keeffe had determined to make her way as an artist. O’Keeffe pursued studies at the Art Institute of Chicago (1905–1906) and at the Art Students League, New York (1907–1908), where she was quick to master the principles of the approach to art-making that then formed the basis of the curriculum — imitative realism. In 1908, she won the League’s William Merritt Chase still-life prize for her oil painting Untitled (Dead Rabbit with Copper Pot). Shortly thereafter, however, O’Keeffe quit making art, saying later that she had known then that she could never achieve distinction working within this tradition. Her interest in art was rekindled four years later when she took a summer course for art teachers at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, taught by Alon Bement of Teachers College, Columbia University. Bement introduced O’Keeffe to the then revolutionary ideas of his colleague at Teachers College, artist and art educator Arthur Wesley Dow. Dow believed that the goal of art was the expression of the artist’s personal ideas and feelings and that such subject matter was best realized through harmonious arrangements of line, color, and notan (the Japanese system of lights and darks).
