Jim Causley is an award winning folk singer and musician hailing all the way from the village of Whimple. He studied ‘Folk & Traditional Music’ at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and has since risen to great acclaim on the national folk scene and worked with many respected artists including Waterson:Carthy, Michael Morpurgo, Show of Hands, Shirley Collins, Graham Coxson and David Rotheray of Beautiful South fame. Jim specialises in reviving the traditional songs of Devon as well as pending his own songs and setting poems to music, particularly those of his late relative, the Cornish poet Charles Causley. Jim is in great demand both locally and nationally, he has been nominated six times for a BBC Radio 2 A week Long Folk Award and was described by West Country father of folk Geoff Lakeman as possessing “a voice in a million”. Jim has played for us once series of previously in Doug’s Shed before the lockdown and is a great lover of the village, so much so that his family very nearly moved to the village but the Events for THE house sale sadly fell through! Jim also lead the music for the revived Deer Park Wassail in January 2020. Buckerell Community Monday 30th August Bank Holiday Monday Saturday 4th September Beating the Bounds - 10am start from the Church Buckerell Fete - 2pm Splatthayes A community stroll around the Parish with some songs from Jim All hands on deck for the village fete. Volunteers to run stalls will be Causley along the way. Quite flat and suitable for all. In sections so greatly appreciated. It will be opened by Devon County Councillor you can pick what to walk. Come along and enjoy a variety of stalls and a cream tea. Tuesday 31st August Jim Causley our Musician in Residence will be leading a singing Quarter Peal rung by local bellringers on the eve of St workshop at 3pm which will include rehearsing a folk song for the Giles Day service on Sunday. Wednesday 1st September – St Giles Day Sunday 5th September Family Communion - 6:30pm the Church Community Church Service – 11am Church A special service dedicated to the patron saint of Buckerell Church - We will be hearing from some residents of our community about Saint Giles followed by cheese and wine in the Old Rectory. these past months and reflect together, give thanks and look forward. The singers from the workshop will sing and Jim will play. We will be nd Thursday 2 September joined by Jackie Searle the Bishop of Crediton Grand Open Air Quiz – details to follow The Buckerell Boules Tournament 2021 - Deer A Grand Open Air Quiz at the Shed organised by Terry and John on Park Farm behalf of Buckerell Community Association. See if all those lockdown quizzes have improved your general knowledge. The Buckerell Community Association present our well known Buckerell Boules Tournament. Players and spectators welcome. More James manager of Combe Garden Sunflower Competition information to come. Centre will judge and the winner will receive £30 in garden tokens.
