    Investigating the health of the UK folk club Dr Stephen Henderson Senior Lecturer Leeds Metropolitan University UK Centre for Events Management Room 216 Bronte Hall Headingley Campus Leeds LS6 3QS United Kingdom Telephone: 0113 812 5514 Email: s.henderson@leedsmet.ac.uk Abstract This research addresses the conflicting views of the health of folk music by way of interviewing artists, agents, and folk club organisers/promoters. Exploring the more homogenous formats of performance observed as singarounds (including sessions), ‘open mic’ and concert clubs, it is concluded that the concert club is struggling to survive whilst the other formats are still offering opportunities to folk artists. However, the latter are finding both the formal venues such as arts centres and the emergence of young promoters provides compensatory opportunities for performance. 1. Aim of Research For many years, folk clubs have provided places of congregation for those of like musical mind to discuss, perform, enjoy and share their music. This paper explores the state of health found within the UK folk club scene where the phrase ‘folk revival’ seems to be mentioned as often as concerns are raised about the future of the folk club. In considering the state of the folk club, this work concentrates on the business models represented by different folk club formats and their relative health as opposed to the complex ethnomusicology behind the folk music format. 2. Methodology In order to address the health of the folk club, the author has interviewed twelve individuals including the artists who play these clubs, agents who book out the artists across the many venues and organisers/promoters who book the artists into these venues.

Jim Causley is an award winning folk singer and musician hailing all the way from the village of Whimple. He studied ‘Folk & Traditional Music’ at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and has since risen to great acclaim on the national folk scene and worked with many respected artists including Waterson:Carthy, Michael Morpurgo, Show of Hands, Shirley Collins, Graham Coxson and David Rotheray of Beautiful South fame. Jim specialises in reviving the traditional songs of Devon as well as pending his own songs and setting poems to music, particularly those of his late relative, the Cornish poet Charles Causley. Jim is in great demand both locally and nationally, he has been nominated six times for a BBC Radio 2 A week Long Folk Award and was described by West Country father of folk Geoff Lakeman as possessing “a voice in a million”.     exeterpoetryfestival 7-10 October 2010 LINE-UP Ruth Padel is an award-winning poet, author of seven collections including an internationally acclaimed verse biography of her great-great-grandfather Charles Darwin, and several-much-loved books on reading poetry, most recently Silent Letters of the Alphabet, on poetry’s use of silence. Her non-fiction includes a study of Greek myth and rock and roll, and an acclaimed eco-memoir on tiger conservation. She is a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London as well as of the Royal Society of Literature and her debut novel, Where the Serpent Lives, published this year (“an intensely readeable parable of love and fear" Daily Mail) was hailed especially for its feel for nature: “Only Emily Brontë has embraced Padel's radical and sympathetic inclusiveness of creaturely life" (Guardian). She is currently working on a mixed book of prose and poetry about migration and immigration. Alice Oswald lives in Devon and is married with three children. Dart, her second collection, won the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2002. Her most recent collection, Woods etc, was a Poetry Book Society Choice and was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Collection and the T. S. Eliot Prize. Greta Stoddart’s first collection At Home in the Dark (Anvil) won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Her second collection Salvation Jane was shortlisted for the Costa Book Award 2008. She lives in East Devon where she teaches for the Poetry School in Exeter and Bridport. Jen Hadfield lives in Shetland, whose landscape and language persistently influence her poetry and visual art.

Whilst grass roots involvement in folk flourishes, a developing folk industry is also playing a central role. The research project has looked at the significance of this newly invigorated interest in English traditions as well as focussing on the kinds of English identities being forged and their politics. The project has had three main objectives. Firstly, it has examined the characteristics of this wave of English folk. Secondly it has looked in detail at the particular kinds of ‘Englishness’ that are being circulated when people ‘do’ English folk, whether as participants, performers, audiences or promoters. Thirdly it has examined why this wave of interest is happening now, and how it might relate to wider shifts in national identity.

    Villages in Action has been using the arts to enrich and support the social vitality of rural communities across Devon for over 20 years. We offer top quality, professional yet affordable arts experiences to communities. By creating a partnership between Villages in Action and village organisations, memorable, high quality events can be organised by people in their own communities so that villages can com e together socially. With funding from Arts Council England and Devon County Council, it is also supported by three district councils; East Devon, Teignbridge and West Devon and operates within those districts as well as Mid Devon and South Hams when funding is available. In the last year, over 115 events and work shops were booked through the scheme i nvolving over 7,000 audience members or workshop participants, with many com munities making small profits as well as enjoying themselves.
