MARPRELATE TRACTS: HAY ANY WORK FOR COOPER 1 ________________________________________________________________________________ Hay Any Work For Cooper.1 Or a brief pistle directed by way of an hublication2 to the reverend bishops, counselling them if they will needs be barrelled up3 for fear of smelling in the nostrils of her Majesty and the state, that they would use the advice of reverend Martin for the providing of their cooper. Because the reverend T.C.4 (by which mystical5 letters is understood either the bouncing parson of East Meon,6 or Tom Cook's chaplain)7 hath showed himself in his late Admonition To The People Of England to be an unskilful and beceitful8 tub-trimmer.9 Wherein worthy Martin quits himself like a man, I warrant you, in the modest defence of his self and his learned pistles, and makes the Cooper's hoops10 to fly off and the bishops' tubs11 to leak out of all cry.12 Penned and compiled by Martin the metropolitan. Printed in Europe13 not far from some of the bouncing priests. 1 Cooper: A craftsman who makes and repairs wooden vessels formed of staves and hoops, as casks, buckets, tubs. (OED, p.421) The London street cry ‘Hay any work for cooper’ provided Martin with a pun on Thomas Cooper's surname, which Martin expands on in the next two paragraphs with references to hubs’, ‘barrelling up’, ‘tub-trimmer’, ‘hoops’, ‘leaking tubs’, etc. 2 Hub: The central solid part of a wheel; the nave. (OED, p.993) 3 A commodity commonly ‘barrelled-up’ in Elizabethan England was herring, which probably explains Martin's reference to ‘smelling in the nostrils of her Majesty and the state’. -

Nicholas (1) Holt and his wife, Elizabeth ( Short), with their daughter Hannah, came from London or Southampton in the ship"James", aaili~g in April, 1635. After a voyage lasting 58 days~ they landed in Boston in June. Nicholas is recorded as a "tanner" from Romney. England. His other occupations in the colonies were those of mas- ter cooper, dish turner,yeoman and husbandman. ( Ralph Farnum came over in the same boat.) He first settled in Newbury where he remained 10 years. There he joined the church; ran a ferry at the bridge near Holt's Rocks and ovmed land on Little River. A patch of 30 acres, still called Holb's Neck, between the highway and Little River was owned by a Little,1n In 1637, Nicholas, with nine others. walked from Newbury to Cambridge, a distance of 40 miles, to register,in order to help Winthrop in his fight with H. 6th on the Proprietors' List In l6~ he came to he members of the First Church, under the Rev. John W(Dodbridge. Here he had. a 15 acre house lot, 160 acres of meadow, 360 acres on Stony Plain and much more was given to him later. A Brief History of Christ Church MEDIEVAL PERIOD Christ Church was founded in 1546, and there had been a college here since 1525, but prior to the Dissolution of the monasteries, the site was occupied by a priory dedicated to the memory of St Frideswide, the patron saint of both university and city. St Frideswide, a noble Saxon lady, founded a nunnery for herself as head and for twelve more noble virgin ladies sometime towards the end of the seventh century. She was, however, pursued by Algar, prince of Leicester, for her hand in marriage. She refused his frequent approaches which became more and more desperate. Frideswide and her ladies, forewarned miraculously of yet another attempt by Algar, fled up river to hide. She stayed away some years, settling at Binsey, where she performed healing miracles. On returning to Oxford, Frideswide found that Algar was as persistent as ever, laying siege to the town in order to capture his bride. Frideswide called down blindness on Algar who eventually repented of his ways, and left Frideswide to her devotions. Frideswide died in about 737, and was canonised in 1480. Long before this, though, pilgrims came to her shrine in the priory church which was now populated by Augustinian canons. Nothing remains of Frideswide’s nunnery, and little - just a few stones - of the Saxon church but the cathedral and the buildings around the cloister are the oldest on the site. Her story is pictured in cartoon form by Burne-Jones in one of the windows in the cathedral. One of the gifts made to the priory was the meadow between Christ Church and the Thames and Cherwell rivers; Lady Montacute gave the land to maintain her chantry which lay in the Lady Chapel close to St Frideswide’s shrine. -

What is God doing? The Bible's story of Job tells us what God is doing in the midst of suffering. We do not know who wrote the book of Job, or when. Having said that, a copy of Job was found at the Qumran Caves amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls. This makes it likely that the first copy of Job was written before 300 BC. We also don’t know if Job was a real person or not. There are no historical markers in the book to anchor the story, Without these details it has a sense of “once upon a time”. The book of Job is located in the “Wisdom Literature” section of the Old Testament. Quite possibly the book was written to teach principles about the nature of suffering, the relationship between wrongdoing and suffering, and the role of God in this.
