Formed in 1989 by Patti Edwards, Ellie Mallory, Donell Teaff, Dorothy Faye McClendon, Carol James and Janice Walden, the AFCWA is a national organization that works in conjunction with the American Football Coaches Association. Wives of these great competitors have come together in an effort to support and serve in their own communities and across the country. The AFCWA is for wives of coaches at all levels.” – Nancy Cubit Larry Haylor Head Coach, Western Ontario University (Canada) WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW HIM: University of Western Ontario head coach Larry Haylor is the winningest coach in Canadian intercollegiate football history. He secured the record as the Mustangs defeated the Waterloo Warriors (Ontario) on Sept. 6, 2003, by a score of 62-12 in Waterloo, giving Haylor win No. 154 – breaking the record previously held by David “Tuffy” Knight, a former Waterloo and Laurier head coach. Knight is now an assistant with the Laurier Golden Hawks, who showed up at the stadium for their home game last night just as Haylor and the Mustangs were boarding the bus back to London, Ontario. According to sports writer Ryan Pyette of the London Free Press, Knight does not want to let go of the record lightly. “I think there were a couple of games he (Haylor) was suspended for giving the officials heck, so I want to check on that (record),” Knight jokingly told the reporter. Haylor, who just finished his 19th season with Western, has posted a winning record every season since taking the helm of the Mustangs in 1984. In 1994, he guided Western to an undefeated season (12-0) to win his second Vanier Cup. He won his first Cup in 1989 (11-1). Canadian Intercollegiate All-time Wins 1.     SEARCH FIRMS By Martin J. Greenberg I. INTRODUCTION When a university looks to fill a vacancy within their athletic department, the process for doing so is sophisticated. Whether a search firm is hired, or an athletic director is conducting the search, the qualifications that are sought in a Head Coach are extensive. These qualifications and factors include, but are not limited to: experience (game strategy), pedigree (prior experience), whether the coach is a position coach or a coordinator, whether the coach understands the game, academic progress achievement, education (advanced degree), personality characteristics, communication and media skills, fundraising capabilities, connections in the industry, networking, recruiting capabilities, compliance (administrative skills), head coaching experience, conflict resolution, reputation, search agencies (advocacy), family name (example: Pitino, Holtz), agent of coach, playing career, work ethic, ability to integrate into college life, public credibility, and whether a coach is known within the industry (peer ratings), to name a few. In a recent athletic director search conducted for the University of South Florida, Eastman & Beaudine, Inc. asked the following questions of candidates that are reflective and indicative of the broad experiences and successes that search firms are looking for in their future potential hires: 1. What is the Budget for your Athletics department? The number of Men’s and Women’s sports? How many student athletes in your program? 2. How large is your current staff? How many of the staff have you hired/let go? Describe your style in managing a broad range of coaches and staff and how you interact with the President of the University, the Board, faculty and various committees? 3.

I think we have been a good member for the BIG EAST, but the conference has been a great avenue for us to reach our potential.” – Frank Beamer Bowl Games • The BIG EAST has always assured itself of prestigious bowl invitations. The league champion will attend the Tostitos Fiesta, FedEx Orange, Nokia Sugar or Rose Bowls as part of its membership in the Bowl Championship Series. The Hokies have represented the league in two of the aforementioned bowls - the Nokia Sugar Bowl (twice) and the FedEx Orange Bowl. • The BIG EAST and the Toyota Gator Bowl have a multi-year pact, which allows the Gator Bowl to select a BIG EAST bowl-eligible team after the league's representative in the Bowl Championship Series has been determined. The BIG EAST has sent a team to the Gator Bowl for six of the past seven seasons. Since joining the league, Tech has represented the BIG EAST in three Gator Bowls, including a 41-20 victory over Clemson in last season's game. • The Insight.com Bowl is entering its third year as a partner with the BIG EAST.
