Name: George Baxter Company: SSE Renewables Proposer: Aaron Priest, Viking Energy Seconder: Jennifer Skrynka, ASH Design and Assessment

I wish to be considered for election to the Scottish Renewables Board as I believe I would be able to contribute significant skills and experience to assist the organisation to achieve its objectives. I am currently Head of Development Strategy for SSE and have been an active participant in Scottish Renewables working groups and working with the staff on issues and strategies for over 5 years; particularly in the areas of planning, development and environmental issues, public affairs, communications and policy. Prior to working at SSE I have worked in the Scottish Parliament and for Scottish Environmental NGOs WWF and Friends of the Earth.

As the industry faces a number of challenges, the organisation and its staff need support and contributions from its membership by people who are both passionate about renewables and with the energy to make a telling contribution. I believe I have those attributes and would be delighted if my nomination was accepted by the membership.

Name: Andrew Bellamy Company: Areva Proposer: Adrian Gillespie, Scottish Enterprise Seconder: Zoe Barnes, BVG Associates Scotland

Over the last 15 years I have led development of supply chain components and major industrial manufacturing capacity to deliver renewables projects in multiple locations around the world. My appointment to AREVA in 2011 was focused on enabling delivery of a local manufacturing capability in the UK and led to AREVA’s public commitment to manufacture offshore wind turbines in Scotland subject to suitable orders. Alongside planning for manufacturing facilities, I have worked extensively on behalf of AREVA to promote local supply chain integration, and AREVA’s willingness to engage and develop suppliers both across Scotland and rest of the UK. I am a firm believer in development of an industry through its people, and in 2013 I led the establishment of the AREVA Wind Turbine Technician pre-apprenticeship at Fife College, to develop skilled resources in Scotland.

With the ongoing consultation of a more formal Government supply chain evaluation as part of the Electricity Market Reform, it is clear that the role of the UK supply chain will be far greater with the changing funding mechanism. On that basis, I see it as a critical time for Scottish Renewables to take an even greater role in bringing the multiple tiers of established and potential supply chain to the forefront of project developer and OEM engagement. Through my election to the Board I would use this opportunity to represent these companies, and provide a clear path for the emerging supply chain to bring their voice to the top level of Scottish Renewables.

Name: Andrew Bright Company: Energised Environments Limited Proposer: Gordon Hay, CMS Cameron McKenna Seconder: Malcolm Garrity, Intertek

Name: Dr Jay Butler Company: vento ludens Ltd Proposer: Paul Minto, HBJ Gately Seconder: Jane Cumming, Platform PR

I have been Managing Director of vento ludens (UK) since its establishment in 2008. Starting with just me, the company now holds an expert team of 14 divided between our headquarters in Edinburgh and our recently opened Bristol hub. We focus on the development of onshore wind and solar PV projects and our pipeline encompasses 165 megawatts of installed capacity at various stages, we have consented and built projects of a combined installed capacity of 40 megawatts.

I have previously worked as a marine research scientist, designing monitoring procedures for marine mammals for offshore renewable projects as well as providing advice on environmental compliance and policy analysis. Given my diverse background, I believe I would bring to the Board a unique breadth of experience and be able to adapt that experience to different situations in a flexible and dynamic way.

I see a key challenge as being to promote the benefits of renewables effectively as the industry continues to grow. We need to explore new ways of mobilising grassroots support based on the huge opportunities for skilled employment it can offer. Also a focus on transition training is crucial in order to encourage more experienced individuals into renewables from other sectors. Additionally we need to all scale up on the effective delivery of community benefits.

It feels to me that we have only just scratched the surface of the possibilities and potential of renewables in Scotland. We need to think more ambitiously, imaginatively and importantly collectively.

Name: Nikki Carlyle Company: Muirhall Energy Ltd Proposer: Steve Macken, Lomond Energy Ltd Seconder: John Cumming, Ennova Renewable Energy Law

I’m Contracts Manager and In-house Legal for Muirhall Energy, a growing, independent Scottish development company, working on all aspects from site acquisition to construction and operation. I live and work alongside a wind farm and I’m passionate about the development of the industry.

I joined Muirhall Energy in 2009 after 13 years in a leading legal practice. As Muirhall Energy has grown, my role has focused on legal, HR and project management. I was heavily involved in the creation of a local community charity trust that receives and distributes funds from one of our wind farms. I’m also a committee member of the local farmers’ club, a charity which runs the annual agricultural show.

Muirhall’s success is based on a clear strategy, effective team working and specialist skills. I’ve a strong track record for working effectively with our communities - building productive, lasting stakeholder and community relationships. This has helped us to deliver both business and community aspirations - an area I can bring particular expertise to and one I feel the industry needs to focus on more in the years ahead.

I believe the above demonstrates I have a broad and balanced understanding of renewable energy development in Scotland from the perspective of both the developer and the local community.

If successful with my nomination I would add value through my legal, development and community expertise and would be a positive ambassador for the organisation and the industry as a whole.

Name: Lilian Patricia Hawthorn Company: Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP Proposer: Alan Baker, 2020 Renewables Ltd Seconder: Cameron Smith, Mainstream Renewable Power

I am seeking re-election to the Board of Scottish Renewables.

I have been a Director of Scottish Renewables for 2 years now and have a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the business and the management team. Last May I was elected Vice Chair by the Board. The Vice Chair appointment runs for 3 years subject to re- election as a Director. I think some continuity within a small organisation like Scottish Renewables is important. We are part of the way through implementing changes that I see as beneficial for members and for the business. I would really like to see these changes delivered.

I have been in legal practice for 28 years, the last 15 working almost exclusively in the renewables sector. I have worked with many of our members on renewables projects or more widely. I have engaged fully with Scottish Government and regulatory bodies such as Marine Scotland and SEPA through my involvement with Scottish Renewables, Renewable UK and Environmental Services Association.

I have co-chaired the Offshore Wind Strategy Group for the last two years and I am delighted to see the membership grow again this year. Through this Group, we have debated and lobbied Government on many important issues. There is still much work to be done to see all of our offshore projects through to construction and operation. Scottish Renewables should be at the centre of this work.

Name: Colin Morgan Company: DNV GL (formerly GL Garrad Hassan) Proposer: Robert Reed, Falck Renewables Seconder: David Cameron, EDF Energy

Renewables has a problem. We know about the positives – clean, secure, fuel-free, job- creating, tax-paying – which carried the industry along as a bit-part player in the broader energy sector. Now, we’re confronted with the challenge of delivering on those as a substantial energy-provider.

That’s where SR comes in as a major voice and enabler for the industry. We in SR must take the industry forward in Scotland, recognising the pros and cons of the technologies we represent and constructively and honestly communicating those. At a time when the electricity industry has lost the trust of the public, there is an opportunity for the renewables industry to rebuild this by taking a principled position and delivering. We also must continue the good work of easing businesses into the industry to delivery on the promise of jobs and taxes.

That’s why I’m keen to work with SR to bring my own enthusiasm for renewables and the commitment of DNV GL (formerly GL Garrad Hassan). My current role is heading a team of 250 renewable energy specialists including being MD for UK business. I’ve been with my current employer working in renewable energy for over 25 years across R&D, offshore wind, onshore wind, project development, construction and operations. I have also led a policy and strategy team which, for example, has been engaged and influential in Scottish Government policy-making. This wide ranging perspective means that I am well positioned to help SR rise to the challenge of converting renewables in Scotland from adolescence to mature adulthood.

Name: Alan Mortimer Company: Sgurr Energy Ltd Proposer: Simon Christian, ScottishPower Renewables Seconder: Andrew Jamieson, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult

The Scottish renewables sector is enormously successful, but also hugely challenged, with issues such as grid integration, public acceptance, and technology development all conspiring to dictate the pace of growth. As a long-standing participant in this sector, including 4 years with Howden in wind turbine manufacture, 22 years with ScottishPower Renewables in project and technology development, and latterly at Wood Group Sgurr as Director of Innovation, I am very keen to be part of the Scottish Renewables Board with the aim to drive forward the Scottish Renewables sector to achieve the 100% renewable electricity target, accompanied by substantial penetration of renewables into heat and transport.

I would like to see this done in a way which:

1) Ensures maximum involvement of, and benefit for, Scottish companies, the economy and jobs 2) Works collaboratively with all stakeholder groups including industrial, political, community and environmental 3) Continues and strengthens Scottish Renewables’ excellent work on the public profile of renewables by ensuring that the benefits are fully communicated, as well as maximised 4) Ensures that the current supportive climate for technology development and innovation, particularly in marine renewables, is translated into real and long-term commercial and social advantage for Scotland as the sector moves to large scale deployment

Scotland has an envious position as a global leader on many renewables fronts, and Scottish Renewables has a key role to play in building on that position, for the benefit of the industry, and the nation as a whole.

The alternative energy industry is continuously evolving. The next emerging area being heat; my area of expertise being industrial heatpumps. I have also had to keep abreast of the renewable legislation not just for our offering but competing solutions and their strengths and weaknesses and am a big admirer of Scottish Renewables’ work.

However in my role as Director of Innovation in Star Refrigeration and another non-exec post with Ceed-Scotland (a peer to peer knowledge sharing network) I have broader skills in market strategy.

I joined the CeeD 3 years ago and I've actively contributed to the stabilisation and growth as CeeD have grown from 70 members to 125 across the West of Scotland and are projected to grow members to over 500 across Scotland.

I have also taken on the role of liaison with Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Government and DECC and have enjoyed a growing relationship with these groups. I believe they value my insight as I have been asked to engage directly on several occasions including the District Heating Expert Commission for Fergus Ewing and Stephen Roberts at DECC.

I would be delighted to be able to support SR in the ongoing journey. You have an increasingly difficult and important role to play as the renewables market will certainly diversify and fragment across more and more technologies and smaller and smaller players. As the renewables industry becomes more mainstream Scottish Renewables will face increasing challenges - not diminishing - and I believe I can support this in many ways.

Name: Iain Robertson Company: Smartest Energy Ltd Proposer: Andrew McFarlane, Wright, Johnston and MacKenzie Seconder: Gavin Catto, Green Cat Renewables

I have been working in the Scottish renewables sector for SmartestEnergy since January 2008, having started my career at ScottishPower in the 1990s.

SmartestEnergy is the market-leading purchaser of renewable electricity from the independent generation sector in the UK. I manage the Business Development team that deals with the power purchase from our 2.3GW portfolio comprising 600 generators. These range in size from 50kW to 90MW and include all commercial-scale technologies. The company is a leading supplier in the ROC and Feed-in Tariff markets, and will also operate in the EMR FiT CfD market.

I am therefore in a strong position to represent the interests and views of independent electricity suppliers and independent developers/ generators of all technologies, both of which groups are critical to the future development, competitiveness and success of the industry, and to support the Board with market experience and expertise.

I have been a member of the Scottish Renewables Hydro Work Group since 2010, and SmartestEnergy also joined the Economics & Markets Work Group in 2013, with its growing focus on EMR issues.

In my four years working in Scotland’s renewables industry, it is clear that the challenges are getting tougher for all stakeholders who wish to see a flourishing sector.

I’m concerned that after nearly a decade of prolonged growth in the renewables industry in Scotland, we risk losing the momentum so many have worked very hard to establish. Onshore wind projects will likely face auctions as a result of EMR. Offshore wind projects need better definition of capacity under the CfD regime. Investment contracts for biomass and CHP have been focussed on English projects. Renewable heat, wave and tidal, and hydro projects in Scotland have been seen as an afterthought to the EMR process.

I’ve spent the past two years as a co-opted Director for Scottish Renewables and I believe this is an agile, pro-active, well-informed team that is ready to tackle the major issues, whether coming from Holyrood, Westminster or Brussels. I’ve taken an active role in operational and strategic issues for the Board; EMR, re-structuring the membership system and supporting the long-term sustainability of Scottish Renewables as a business entity.

As Deputy Director for EDP Renewables UK (EDPR UK) and Moray Offshore Renewables, based in Edinburgh, I have seen our team grow into a consortium of international development partners employing over 60 professionals and deploying tens of millions of pounds in Scotland. I’m keen that the next part of the story for renewables in Scotland includes the build-up of a renewables supply chain, jobs and economic activity within our own borders. This will only happen if the regulatory and economic conditions signal to all stakeholders that the opportunity in renewables is a very big one.

I’m seeking your support to continue my work with Scottish Renewables to maintain our momentum and realise the promise of the industry.

Name: Grant Walker Company: Siemens plc Proposer: Roderick Wood, Community Windpower Ltd Seconder: Dennis Breugelmans, Wind Towers (Scotland) Ltd

It is critical that Scottish Renewables represent the industry effectively, building a compelling case to support the change necessary to support the importance of renewable energy in the broad spectrum of energy supply to support future energy demand. As a former student of the University of Strathclyde and a chartered engineer, I have gained a broad experience across the chemical and power industries including ICI, DuPont and Siemens. I would plan to bring the skills I have gained working primarily in business operational and change roles. My key strengths lie in leadership and development of business strategy to drive growth and profitability.

In my current role as the UK and head of onshore wind for Siemens we oversee over 2GW of onshore wind power across multiple sites in Scotland. This has given a clear understanding of the Scottish renewables environment. This role, which is client facing, has allowed me to develop a broad range of customer relationships from major energy companies in Scotland through to developers, as well as other key stakeholder relationships throughout Scotland.

The promotion of investment to support the growing renewable industry is also a key personal driver. A key development while leading Siemens Onshore Wind was the recent investment in a new hub to support the construction of wind farms, bringing employment opportunities to the local area. Development of the supply base and provision of training (at all levels) of academic ability is crucial to the continued growth and I would aim to work through SR to support and promote these.

I have been involved in the Renewable Energy Sector for 8 years working for the Carbon Trust, firstly managing a variety of innovation projects across Offshore Wind, Wave and Tidal, Biomass and then in more strategic roles as Head of Technology Acceleration, then Director of Innovation. During this time I also represented the Carbon Trust’s interests on the EMEC Board, the ETI programme board and various other working groups. I have been responsible for building the Carbon Trust innovation activity in Scotland, resulting in a team of 6 people now based in Edinburgh and developing close relationships with Scottish government and other public sector agencies. My current role as Director of Strategy for the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult based in Glasgow places me at the heart of Offshore Renewables Innovation; sitting between the key industry players who will make this sector a success and the public sector agencies responsible for the a flow of funding and policy making.

I believe I can bring expertise in relation to the commercial and innovation challenges which the offshore renewables industry needs to continue tackling, and deep expertise in relation to marine energy. I also have a strong working knowledge of the public sector funding landscape and how it operates.

Having spent the early part of my career working as an engineer I tend to operate in a logical, objective and fact based way, which I believe brings clarity of thought found helpful in group working environments.
