Barbara Kolb: Millefoglie and other works New World 80422-2 Barbara Kolb's musical aesthetic is most often concerned with the building of vertical structures by juxtaposing discrete and recognizable rhythmic or melodic units. These units then undergo harmonic change or melodic and rhythmic variation, with corresponding effects on the vertical structure. Some works have horizontal development with clear beginnings, middles, and ends, while others invite the ear to perceive sets of musical objects from all sides, as if looking at sculpture. Kolb creates lyrical and expressive subaqueous seascapes inhabited by musical objects which appear, change, and vanish. Often one is drawn inexorably toward an intense yet transforming encounter; sometimes the material leads progressively to a cataclysmic climax. Other works succeed in bringing specific images or poems to musical life. Kolb's music most often finds its source in particular poetic ideas or visual images rather than preconceived mathematical models. It is emotive and evocative—the progeny of Ravel and Debussy, with occasional reminiscences of American jazz. Millefoglie, a nineteen-minute one-movement work for chamber orchestra and computer generated tape, is concerned with the multiple ways in which layers of harmonic and rhythmic structures can be superimposed. The layers are both vertical and horizontal: that is, they exist at the same instant in time and through time. Moreover, they constantly undergo expansion and contraction, thus creating interplay between the horizontal and vertical layers. The work also contains a buildup to one of the most intense climaxes in Kolb's music. The beginning of the work, a four-minute section, is scored for instruments alone without the tape. -

Stinney: an American Execution Company Biographies: Creatives
Co-presented by: Co-produced by: & WORK-IN-PROGRESS | OPERA STINNEY: AN AMERICAN EXECUTION COMPANY BIOGRAPHIES: CREATIVES FRANCES POLLOCK (COMPOSER & CO-LIBRETTIST) Known for her “bold and bracing” (Baltimore Sun) opera writ- ing, Frances Pollock’s music “pulls no punches and never flinches” (City Paper). Originally from North Carolina, Frances’ music digs its roots into jazz, blues, gospel, folk, and a variety of other styles. Her music has been performed all over the country by the Bridge Ensemble, Prima Volta, The North Carolina Governors’ School, Divine Waters Ensemble, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, and many others. In 2016, Frances was commissioned by Washington National Opera to write a one-act opera entitled “What Gets Kept” as part of the Kennedy Center’s “American Opera Initiative” Festival. Stinney’s accolades thus far include multiple awards from Johns Hopkins University and beyond, including the Diversity Innovation Grant and a Baltimore City Paper’s “Best of Baltimore” award. This past summer, Frances was a composition fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and with American Opera Projects’ Composers and the Voice where she is develop - ing a new opera entitled Salt. Frances is also a “Turn the Spotlight” fellow and working under the mentorship of Kamala Sankaram. Frances is currently working on a children’s opera with Chicago Lyric Opera that will premiere in Fall of 2019. Frances is a founding member of the new music non-profit, Prima Volta. She currently studies with Christopher Theo - fanidis at Yale University. TIA PRICE (CO-LIBRETTIST) is a Black, queer community artist that promotes the liberation of black and brown youth through arts education. -

He received a degree in music composition from San Jose State University and has studied composition with Donald Sur, Brent Heisinger, Charles Jones, and Andrew Imbrieas well as conducting with Angelo Frascarelli, David Epstein and Higo Harada. He was a violinist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and was assistant conductor of the Palo Alto Philharmonic and the Nova Vista Symphony. He has composed orchestral, band and chamber works. His father taught him how to play the clarinet, and was a clarinetist in community ensembles and later studied the instrument further with Felix Viscuglia, clarinetist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He began composing as a child and then studied composition at Harvard University with Leon Kirchner, Roger Sessions, Earl Kim and David Del Tredici. In addition, he worked in the electronic music studio at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music having built his own analogue synthesizer. He went on to become one of America's leading composers whose works are constantly performed.
