IN OTHER NEWS . . .

Every year, hard-luck horses are given a chance to redeem Parx Horsemen Around the Nation themselves with a special starter allowance race for horses that had not won a race during that calendar year. The final racing weekend in 2018 gave horses four opportunities to capture that elusive victory.

First on the schedule was the $50,000 Gift of the Magi, for horses Stand and Salute draws off in the $50,000 Gift of the Magi Starter Allowance. who had started for a claiming price of $10,000 or less in 2018 and had also not won a race in the same year. Favored Stand and Salute made easy work of the full field of twelve, drawing off under mild urging from Silvestre Gonzalez to win by an emphatic six lengths. The gelded son of Saint Anddan was trained by Joseph Taylor for Felipa Quevedo- Hernandez. On December 31, 2018, the $50,000 Mistletoe gave a chance to fillies and mares for the same condition, and Patrick A. Kane’s Lion and the Wolf led from gate to wire for her second career victory. The PA-Bred by E Dubai was ridden to victory by Navin Mangalee for trainer Ramon Martin. Later in that day’s card, two additional route starter allowances were contested for horses that had started for a claiming price of $12,500 or less in 2017-18. Even-money favorite Viva Forever captured the $50,000 Holiday Bubbly for the girls, while Moon Gate Warrior rebounded from a third-place finish in the Claiming Crown Iron Horse Stakes to win the $50,000 Auld Lang Syne by a convincing 5 1/4 lengths. * * * * * Parx Racing was hit with a quarantine for the majority of the month of January after a horse tested positive for the respiratory equine herpes virus. While nowhere near as fatal as the neurological strain that affected the track several years ago, state veterinarians chose to be proactive in closing the stable gates and not permitting horses to leave the grounds. Thus far, the situation is under control and, barring anything unforseen, Lion and the Wolf surprises in the $50,000 should be resolved by the end of the month. Mistletoe Starter Allowance.

With the required implementation of microchips in Thoroughbred racehorses for all foals of 2017 and later, it should come as no surprise that lip tattoos will soon become obsolete. That change will be in effect by 2020, when physical foal papers will also be discontinued. While tattoos have been used for years as a form of identification, oftentimes the tattoo becomes difficult or even impossible to decipher. Microchips have been studied in the United States and other countries - including Australia, Europe, South Africa and Asia - and are proven to be more reliable and accurate for positive identification. Puerto Rico has used microchips rather than tattoos for more than five years. MICROCHIPPING On November 23, 2018, the first PTHA-sponsored, Jockey Club-provided microchip was inserted into a Parx Thoroughbred racehorse. Since then, between 20-70 horses have been microchipped each week with the assistance of veterinarian Dr. Tom Lurito, Parx Horse Identifier Daniela Hampshire, and Turning for Home Program Administrator Danielle Montgomery. By the year 2020, all racehorses must be microchipped, and lip

tattoos as well as physical foal papers will be discontinued. “He forgot his badge.” Photo: Kate DeMasi

EVENTS The MATCH Series returned to the Mid-Atlantic region tracks in 2018 and was met with enthusiasm by participants. The program was slightly adjusted for 2019 and is expected to become even more popular with those changes (see page 16). The PTHA also hosted its 10th Annual Owners Appreciation Day in September, which was well-attended as always. And of course, Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion Day was a huge success.
