OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER ARIZONA THOROUGHBRED 9 ATBA 2017 Fall Yearling & Mixed Sale

t was a perfect weather for a sale. Shoppe re in and out of their stalls many, many times. The yearlings that brought Ithe bucks graded high on everyone’s list. With 96 yearlings, 4 racing age Thoroughbreds, 6 broodmares, and 1 weanling shoppers had lot to choose from.

A unnamed yearlings topped the sale with a purchase price of $53,000. A filly by Flat Out out of Encore Belle bought by Tim Bankers, consigned by Hidden Springs Ranch, Property of Double Kee, LLC.

Kings River Ranch consignment was a great place to shop for older horses for buyers looking for horses to fill their barns at Turf Paradise ready to run.

E. Eikleberry/J L Yother/ W. Matthews purchased a Bay Filly by Ez Dreamer and out of Shaky Canyon, mother to Fortified Efford who has ran out $127,238 to date, Consigned by Fleming Thoroughbred Farm, LLC. Derek Stebner bought a bay colt by Real Solution out of Love Runs Deep, from the same consignment for $30,000.00

This year the sale did something different by selling Stallion Services with all sale proceeds being donated to the medical fund of disabled Jockey Anne Von Rosen. Anne was injured in a riding accident at Turf Paradise and has endured countless hours of therapy on her road to recovery. She has traveled many miles to places like Puerto Rico and has undergone surgeries, strength training and has gained valuable knowledge, as well as her independence with the help of medical specialists, doctor’s and the designs of new technology. Thanks to Dorothee Kieckhefer, for her time getting the Stallion Services to sale.

All involved in this endeavor; sellers and workers should be commended. Space won’t allow me to acknowledge everyone...so. Thanks to all who helped make this the “Best Little Sale in the West.”

The ATBA Board of Directors, and staff would like to wish all our buyers the best of racing luck with their new prospect’s and we hope to see you in the winner’s circle in the new year!

Good Luck!

If you want to raise foals to compete in a specific type performance, the mare should have been shown successfully in those events. Performance ability is rather highly heritable. So, it is genetically transmitted from one generation to the next. Management factors, such as training or good nutrition, are not passed on to the next generation.

Conformation is also important since horses are athletic animals. Horses must stay sound if they are to perform successfully. Mares must have good skeletal conformation, especially feet and legs. Too often, individuals over-emphasize less important conformation traits, such as a pretty head or color, rather than soundness.

As you horse would be in good horsemen and women hands. know, this is never a good sign. His three He was strictly a "blue pasture mates were collar" racehorse. After standing around him. I breaking his maiden at quickly grabbed a halter the California fairs in & lead rope and some Solano on July 17, 2003 Banamine. After giving and running a couple him the Banamine, we of times in New Mexico, he found a home at Yavapai started walking. He frequently tried to do down again, Downs and the Arizona fairs. Although he was not and his "roommates" would nip at him and encourage Breeders' Cup material, he amassed an enviable him to keep walking. After what seemed like miles of record of 19 wins, 10 seconds and 13 thirds in 66 walking, he passed gas, pooped and became interested starts. His last race was at Rillito Racetrack in Tucson in eating. For the first time ever, he joined the other on March 23, 2012, and he "lit the board" in his final three horses at "their" feeder and was welcomed start, finishing third. by them.

For the five plus years he has been with us, Stranger Since that time, Stranger has been accepted and has lived with the same group of geldings. They are: almost never dines alone! Did the other three Brax who was lightly raced in New Mexico, Ghostly recognize the symptoms of the dreaded colic and Dance who earned $133,330 on the New Mexico empathize with their formerly excluded companion? tracks and Touch My Abs who was a $135,000 yearling Did they think he might be leaving them? We need purchase in and who ran 10 of his 20 starts a "Horse Whisperer" to ferret out the truth, but in California. Brax is a beautiful chestnut, Ghostly whatever clicked in their equine minds was a good Dance is a bay with some "chrome" and Touch My thing and STRANGER IS NOW ONE OF THE BOYS!

50 ARIZONA THOROUGHBRED OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER PEDIGREE CROSS INDEX

This Pedigree Cross Index allows a breeder to nick, inbreed or outcross his broodmares by easy reference. Indexed are the names of sires and dams included within the first three generations of all the stallions in the 2018 Stallion Directory. Example: AFFIRMED - Charlie Barley, Mystery Storm, Peteski In the above example, Affirmed appears in one of the first 3 generations of all the stallions listed after him. Suppose a breeder has a mare that is a granddaughter of Mr. Prospector or has crosses of that sire in a mare’s pedigree. He may want to breed her to a stallion with Northern Dancer blood to take advantage of the Northern Dancer--Mr. Prospector nick. By looking up “Northern Dancer” in this index, he can quickly see all the stallions in this register that have Northern Dancer appearing in one of the first three generations of their pedigrees. If a breeder’s mare is a granddaughter of Seattle Slew, he may wish to inbreed to that stallion and thereby get more of Seattle Slew’s makeup in the foal. By checking “Seattle Slew” in the index, the breeder can readily find all the advertised stallions that have Seattle Slew in their pedigrees. What if a breeder’s mare is already inbred or linebred? She might have 2 or 3 crosses of Deputy Minister in her first four generations for example. The breeder may want to make sure the stallion he chooses for his mare has no Deputy Minister or no Deputy Minister up close in his pedigree. By looking up “Deputy Minister” in the index, he can readily see the stallions in this Stallion Register he should avoid for his mare.
