THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS PLAYERS IN POWER: A HISTORICAL REVIEW OF CONTRACTUALLY BARGAINED AGREEMENTS IN THE NBA INTO THE MODERN AGE AND THEIR LIMITATIONS ERIC PHYTHYON SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Political Science and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Labor and Employment Relations Reviewed and approved* by the following: Robert Boland J.D, Adjunct Faculty Labor & Employment Relations, Penn State Law Thesis Advisor Jean Marie Philips Professor of Human Resources Management, Labor and Employment Relations Honors Advisor * Electronic approvals are on file. ii ABSTRACT: This paper analyzes the current bargaining situation between the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and the changes that have occurred in their bargaining relationship over previous contractually bargained agreements, with specific attention paid to historically significant court cases that molded the league to its current form. The ultimate decision maker for the NBA is the Commissioner, Adam Silver, whose job is to represent the interests of the league and more specifically the team owners, while the ultimate decision maker for the players at the bargaining table is the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), currently led by Michele Roberts. In the current system of negotiations, the NBA and the NBPA meet to negotiate and make changes to their collective bargaining agreement as it comes close to expiration. This paper will examine the 1976 ABA- NBA merger, and the resulting impact that the joining of these two leagues has had. This paper will utilize language from the current collective bargaining agreement, as well as language from previous iterations agreed upon by both the NBA and NBPA, as well information from other professional sports leagues agreements and accounts from relevant parties involved.

The Strat-O-Matic Game Co. won't be putting out six Old-Timer baseball teams from the period 1920-1939. Now the good news. Instead, it will be putting out eight Old-Timer teams From that period! Because the recent poll conducted in the Review showed a heavy concentrat- ion of votes for two New York Yankee teams (1921 and 1936) and because, after the first three teams, the voting was extremely close, S-O-M creator Harold Richman has decided on eight teams instead of the planned six. When the Review editors last talked with the game company, Richman was researching the eight teams and prepar.ing Fielding and running ratings. The newest set of Old-Timer teams will be available when the 1976 baseball cards come out in the early spring. Now, which eight teams will be added to the growing list of Old-Timer card sets already available? Here are the eight that the readers picked via the poll and the percentage (out of 90 votes) that each received: 1. 1934 Detroit Tigers - 72.2%. 2. 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates - 55.6%. 5. (tie) 1936 New York Yankees, 3. 1929 Chicago Cubs - 53.3% 40%. 4. 1921 New York Yankees - 42.2%.

Prof. Dr. Owen Miller August 2020 Professional basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) founded the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) in 1954. The first collective act of professional basketball players under the NBPA was a threat to strike just before the 1964 NBA All-Star Game. Eventually, they had achieved to get the pension plan that they hoped for many years. Larry Fleisher, the general counsel of the NBPA, and Oscar Robertson, the president of the NBPA, were determined to abolish the reserve clause in basketball. The reserve clause restrained the free movement of professional athletes for many years, and NBA players were the ones who established staunch struggle against it, in various ways, including litigation. The NBPA filed a class-action lawsuit, also known as the Oscar Robertson lawsuit, against the merger between two basketball leagues, the NBA, and the ABA (American Basketball Association) in April 1970.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

2/25/97 Special BMA 1 SPECIAL MEETING BOARD OF MAYOR AND ALDERMEN February 25, 1997 7:15 PM Memorial High School Mayor Wieczorek called the meeting to order. Mayor Wieczorek called for the Pledge of Allegiance, this function being led by Alderman Hirschmann. A moment of silent prayer was observed. The Clerk called the roll. There were eleven Aldermen present. Present: Alderman Wihby, Elise, Reiniger, Sysyn, Clancy, Soucy, Shea, Domaingue, Pariseau, Cashin and Hirschmann Absent: Alderman Robert Mayor Wieczorek stated the purpose of the meeting tonight is to hear a presentation by the Finance Officer relative to the status of the proposed CenterPlex project, but I want to at the outset just inform you that this is not a public hearing, it is a public meeting that people can attend, but it is here to be put on for the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, so there won’t be any dialogue with the people that are out there. This is going to be strictly with the Aldermen and the presenters that we have here. So, Kevin if you would start please. Mr. Clougherty stated before we go directly into the presentation, I thought it might be helpful if I could bring you up-to-date on what brings us to this meeting this evening. During the course of the summer and the fall a number of the Aldermen and the Mayor had asked if it were possible for the City to construct an arena in the Downtown area. Under the current structure of State Statutes, local ordinances and federal tax laws if that arena, once constructed would be such that it would not have a negative impact on the property tax rate and was something that could be accomplished within the local resources and not provide a burden to taxpayers.

June 2, 1999 Inside: Volume 6, Number 2 Game Acquisitions 2 Nominations Sought 3 Strange Plays 5 The Retro Sheet Retro News 9 Official Publication of Retrosheet, Inc. There are two topics for this column: game logs and data release policy. The game log story is really just an up- date from last time. Since then Tom Ruane has done a lot of work getting the logs organized. He has had help from Mark Armour who is filling in some of the gaps, especially umpires. In addition David Vincent has written a program that will make access to these logs easy and logical. All that is left is to get the logs posted on the web site, which we hope will be accomplished very soon, perhaps even before you read this notice. The Retrosheet Board of Directors explicitly gave permission to the President of the organiza- tion to decide when a given data file was ready to release. Up to this point, I have been very conservative and we have only released files that had undergone exhaustive proofing. For ex- ample, totals generated from our play by play files agree to the greatest extent possible with the official totals in all batting and pitching categories. For those cases (very few) where our numbers differ from the official totals, we have detailed descriptions of the source of these dif- ferences. The logic behind this slow approach is that I thought it would be damaging to our credibility to release one ver- sion of a file without detailed proofing and then to replace it later after we had made corrections.
