Interesting Lincoln and Booth Item 228. RANKIN, McKEE. O riginal typewritten article by McKee Rankin for a New York Magazine entitled "T he Story of J. Vlilkes Booth's Vlardrobc." A Relation in 1,500 words of how in the Spring of 1865 the author met Booth at the Parker House, having just arrived from :\Iontreal, from which place he had shipped his wardrobe to Ha,·ana upon a little Blockade Runner w hich was wrecked in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The cargo, including Booth's trunks, were saved and. Hooth being by that lime dead, were unclaimed and fi nally, in July. 1865. were sold for salvage. They were bought for J\lcKee Rankin by his Brother. The feeling against actors, on account of the assassination of Lincoln, was very pronounced and Rankin could not induce anyone in the profession to take them over from him. On offering the same to Edwin Booth on his reappearance on the stage he rcceiYed no answer, much to his surprise. The article relates howe,·er that the trunks were eventually sold for $75.00 to Barton Hill. acting secretly for Edwin Booth. The trunks were stored in the \\'inter Garden Theatre. which on the following day was burned with everything in it. OGLESBY, RICHARD JAMES. Senator from Illinois, Brig.-Gen. in the Civil V-./ar and many years associated with Abraham Lincoln. Very fine and interesting Autograph Letter, signed, to his Friend Thomas Donaldson, relating entirely to LrNCOLN and politics in Illinois. He commences" My dear O ld Friend. Early in the Spring of 1858, Circuit Court was being held in Urbana, Champaign Co., Ill. MR. L INCOLN was attending the Court in his Annual Round of the Circuit. I went up from Decatur in a buggy with a lawyer friend to the Court. While there the Question arose of a Candidate for Con- gress in our D istrict, composed of 15 counties running from Decatur and south along the Wabash River and South-East Illinois about 100 or 125 miles. A strong Democratic Region interspersed with a good many O ld \Vhigs, nearly all of whom were from the Southern States, and all both Democrats and Whigs were rather pro-Slavery in feelings, or more correctly stated were very much opposed to Abolitio11is1n a11d very s1,spicious of Republica11ism. Douglas had helped them to make the case as bad as possible black Republicans. The District was, or had been since 1854, about 4,000 to 5,000 Demo- cratic Majority. It was not Yery promising Territory for Republican Success. A good many of us were together at Urbana Anti-Nebraska, Mine Republicans and Anti-Slavery Old Whigs. I had been, as had MR. LINCOLN of course, Anti-Slavery Old Whigs. Everybody of our kind wanted to see Mr. Li11coln chosen U. S. Senator if possible in 1858. We were all of 1{S very fond of, very proud of, and intensely de- voted to him, and whenever we co1tld we listened to, a11d consulted him 1,po11 all political matters. The Question at Urbana was how to organize and how to run as a Candidate in our District for Congress and also the Course and Policy to pursue in the Campaign so as to win over to our Cause as many Kentucky and Tennessee Old Whigs as possible. Should the policy be to denounce, as we felt it ought to be denounced, Slavery fo all its aspects and ever~1where, or should a more moderate and tentative policy be pursued on the Stump as to Extension of Slavery into the Territories as a Moral and Political Evil, etc.1 In one of our walks together the subject of going frankly before the people and trusting to their good sense and good heart, when frankly and openly appealed to in behalf of Justice, Right and Liberty. MR. LINCOLN, in his mild, stern way said : 'REMEMBER, DICK, TO KEEP CLOSE TO THE PEOPLE. THEY ARE ALWAYS RIGHT AND WILL MISLEAD NO ONE.' * * * I have given you the substance of the circum- stances that brought forth the Remark you referred to and which I now give to you correctly. 2 pages, 8vo, with envelope.
