The treaty of Aix la Chapelle, signed in 1748, while it nominally closed the war between these two countries, did little to stop the growing competition between the two 18 th century world super powers in North America; and failed to establish the boundaries between their respective colonies in America. The war began with a dispute over control of the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, called the Forks of the Ohio. The French attempted to deny the British access to the Ohio Country and were the first to complete a fort at the Forks called Fort Duquesne in present day Pittsburgh, PA. France’s seizure of this land that the British and their colonists claimed, would lead to many more conflicts between the British, the French and the Indians for control of the Ohio country and nearby lands. Between 1754 and 1758, the British struggled to recapture their former land possession. With Forbes march across PA to recapture Ft Duquesne in 1758, the French were forced from the Forks and they burned Fort Duquesne with their retreat. After securing the land previously used for Ft Duquesne, the British built Fort Pitt to further secure their quest for the land in the Ohio country previously claimed by the French. This book is that story. 172ppPB color cover from the REPORT OF THE COMMISSION TO LOCATE THE SITES OF THE FRONTIER FORTS OF PENNSYLVANIA 1896… $19.95 BF1001 BORDER FIGHTS AND FIGHTERS Volume #1 STORIES OF THE FRONTIER BETWEEN THE ALLEGHENIES AND THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY by Cyrus Townsend Brady, published in 1901, edited by Ron Wenning. Written by the great-grandnephew of Capt. Samuel Brady, his writing style is very easy to read and comprehend the accurate details. I pulled four chapters from that original book for our first new Border Fights and Fighters Volume #1. Chapters include How Henry Bouquet Saved Pennsylvania at the Battle of Bushy Run, and follows his march over the PA mountains west to his decisive battle at Bushy Run. We then meet Captain Samuel Brady, Chief of the Rangers, detailing this great family of fighters, the famous Brady leap and Captain Sam Brady's adventures on the frontier with the likes of Lewis Wetzel and other Indian fighters. Third chapter is about General Andrew Lewis and the Battle of Point Pleasant. Lord Dunmore's War was precipitated by the murder of Chief Logan's family and Lewis with a collection of border fighters like Girty and Kenton, fights a pivotal battle with Shawnee Chief Cornstalk. Final chapter details George Rogers Clark's terrible 10 day winter march through ice and waist deep water to capture 1 the British "Hair Buyer General" at the Battle of Vincennes; saving the USA from a second Rev War front on our Western border.
