  • Coca-Cola Stage Backgrounder 2016
May 26, 2016 BACKGROUNDER 2016 Coca-Cola Stage lineup Christian Hudson Appearing Thursday, July 7, 7 p.m. Website: http://www.christianhudsonmusic.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChristianHudsonMusic Twitter: www.twitter.com/CHsongs While most may know Christian Hudson by his unique and memorable performances at numerous venues across Western Canada, others seem to know him by his philanthropy. This talented young man won the prestigious Calgary Stampede Talent Show last summer but what was surprising to many was he took his prize money of $10,000 and donated it all to the local drop-in centre. He was touched by the stories he was told by a few people experiencing homelessness he had met one night prior to the contest’s finale. His infectious originals have caught the ears of many in the industry that are now assisting his career. He was honoured to receive 'The Spirit of Calgary' Award at the inaugural Vigor Awards for his generosity. Hudson will soon be touring Canada upon the release of his first single on national radio. Unapologetically himself, the Alberta born singer-songwriter and performer is both bold in range and musical creativity and has a passion and reverence for the art of music and performance that has captured the attention of music fans across the country. He spent the major part of early 2016 as one of the opening acts on the Johnny Reid tour and is also signed to Johnny Reid’s company.

  • The Revolution Will Not Be Televised…But It Will Be Streamed”: Spotify, Playlist Curation, and Social Justice Movements
“THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED…BUT IT WILL BE STREAMED”: SPOTIFY, PLAYLIST CURATION, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVEMENTS Melissa Camp A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Music in the School of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2021 Approved by: Mark Katz Aaron Harcus Jocelyn Neal © 2021 Melissa Camp ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Melissa Camp: “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised…But It Will Be Streamed”: Spotify, Playlist Curation, and Social Justice Movements (Under the direction of Mark Katz) Since its launch in 2008, the Swedish-based audio streaming service Spotify has transformed how consumers experience music. During the same time, Spotify collaborated with social justice activists as a means of philanthropy and brand management. Focusing on two playlists intended to promote the Black Lives Matter movement (2013–) and support protests against the U.S. “Muslim Ban” (2017–2020), this thesis explores how Spotify’s curators and artists navigate the tensions between activism and capitalism as they advocate for social justice. Drawing upon Ramón Grosfoguel’s concept of subversive complicity (2003), I show how artists and curators help promote Spotify’s progressive image and bottom line while utilizing the company’s massive platform to draw attention to the people and causes they care most about by amplifying their messages. iii To Preston Thank you for your support along the way. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would first like to thank my thesis advisor, Mark Katz, for his dedication and support throughout the writing process, especially in reading, writing, and being the source of advice, encouragement, and knowledge for the past year.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION “Forty years ago, co-writing a song with Ringo Starr would have provided me a house and a pool. Now, estimating a hundred thousand plays on Spotify, we guessed we’d split about eighty dollars,”! explains world-renowned composer, songwriter, and musician Van Dyke Parks. In a "#$% op-ed, Parks describes heading up to Ringo Starr’s home and spending two straight days working on a song together.& For the sake of argument, let’s say that they each spent two typical workdays—eight hours per day—on the song. Splitting the aforementioned eighty dollars, which Parks later describes as “optimistic”' because Spotify typ- ically pays a fraction of a cent per play, would result in a payment of forty dollars each for sixteen hours of work, or $ “Van Dyke Parks on How Songwriters Are Getting Screwed in the Digital Age,” Daily Beast, updated July $", "#$(. " Ibid. ) Ibid. IntR odU ctI on · 13 *".+# per hour. For comparison, US federal minimum wage in "#$% was *(."+/hour., Songwriters are not usually paid by the hour, though that might be more lucrative than how they typically get paid. Sometimes, they don’t get paid at all. When it is deemed di-cult to trace a song back to its copyright owners, royal- ties end up in what the industry has termed a “black box.”. /e royalties never reach the owners of the copyright so the streaming services, or whoever is attempting to pay the roy- alties, can keep the owed money inde0nitely. Further, the US Copyright O-ce allowed for bulk-0ling of the necessary forms to claim that the owner of the copyright was too di-cult to discern or 0nd, which gave streaming services an easy out from having to 0nd the rights’ owners.1 /ese services would 0le thousands of claims at once to avoid having to search for the rights holders to pay when songs from their catalogs were streamed.
